EARTH Announce New Album Details

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

The second half of Seattle drone icons EARTH’s Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light is being prepared for release on Southern Lord in North America this February 14th on CD, LP and digital download formats.

Recorded in the same two week session as 2011’s lauded Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I by Stuart Hallerman at Avast and mastered by Mell Detmer, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II carries on in the freely and folkloric vein of the last release and invokes even more improvisational and unrestrained energy than its predecessor.

Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light II is striking in many ways, not least in the wildly improvised nature of this particular recording. The songs “Sigil Of Brass” and “The Corascene Dog” perfectly emphasize how the interplay between the foursome has evolved even further since the first installment. Meanwhile, the track “His Teeth Did Brightly Shine” veers further into an entirely other direction, recalling sounds of the great British Acid Folk generation. This new material brings forth some highly original and deeply mesmerizing tones throughout, at times more hopeful and less dark and death oriented than previous work. Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light II is ultimately a completely unanticipated direction for EARTH, and a very welcome one at that.

The line-up again consists of Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion (on this release there is more percussion of all sorts), Lori Goldston (Nirvana, David Byrne, Black Cat Orchestra, Laura Veirs) returns on cello, and Karl Blau (K Records, Laura Veirs, Microphones) plays bass. This also marks the first time the band on the record has toured outside of the US West Coast in preparation for the album. As with the first part, it again has truly amazing artwork by Stacey Rozich.

Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light II Track Listing:
1. Sigil of Brass
2. His Teeth Did Brightly Shine
3. Multiplicity of Doors
4. The Corascene Dog
5. The Rakehell

Stay tuned for new tours and live actions to be announced in advance of the album’s release and onward through 2012.

“As Earth developed its heavy instrumental vision in the past six years, subtle deviation has been crucial to the band’s renewal. Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1 is the latest installment in that trajectory, adding a cello, desert blues and British folk-rock motifs to Earth’s slow-moving Americana.” – NPR

“While Angels of Darkness… is Earth’s cleanest record, it is perhaps their most focused, as well as one of their darkest. The album emanates looming disaster while still retaining the haunting shadows which stretches from its boots.” – Chronicles Of Chaos

“…finds the band as unwilling as ever to settle creatively, toying with titular contradiction, fostering a previously-unheard richness of tone and taking their rightful place at the head of their genre.” – The Obelisk

“Soothing, tranquil, spacious, this album is good for long, unplanned, contemplative walks with naught but your own a-wanderin’ thoughts to keep you company.” – Burning Ambulance

Darkness From SUMMON THE CROWS And WINTER Due Via Southern Lord In April

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Southern Lord Recordings have confirmed an arsenal of devastating new releases in the works and in some cases already completed, and awaiting release in the dark months ahead of us.

Set for release on April 12, the ‘Lord will reissue the cult death/doom epic Into Darkness, the crushing sole release from infamous Long Island-based trio WINTER. Initially released on Nuclear Blast in 1990, and while overlooked by the majority of modern “doom fans,” Into Darkness is a timeless, flooring classic album that will finally see the light again, on both CD and LP, in time for WINTER to perform their first official live show since reuniting, at this year’s Roadburn festival in Tilburg, Holland.

Also coming out on April 12, a limited edition release of Oslo, the second album from Norway-based terror trio SUMMON THE CROWS. Entitled One More For the Gallows, the d beat-fueled, ten-track crusher is an absolute neck-snapper, with elements of Discharge, Amebix, Wolfpack and Tragedy, with a whiff of low-end stench core filthiness all culminating in the SUMMMON THE CROWS sound. The CD-only release will see a one-time pressing of 1,000 copies.

Other releases erupting forth from the Southern Lord crypts as the year burns away the world will also witness brand new albums from ALL PIGS MUST DIE, BLACK BREATH, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, EAGLE TWIN, EARTH and blackened acres more to be announced in the coming weeks.
