WINDFAERER: Atmospheric Folkloric Black Metal Collective To Release Tenebrosum Full-Length This Fall; New Track Streaming At No Clean Singing

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

New Jersey’s own WINDFAERER forges a soundscape that entwines folkloric elegance with black metal ferocity. A portmanteau meaning, “one who travels with the wind,” like a vessel lost at sea, the name WINDFAERER sets a melancholic atmosphere of longing for a return to a homeland, yet with hopeful eyes set toward the unknown. It is the animus of guitarist and frontman, M. Gonçalves as an epic black metal paean to his ancestral homeland of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal).

In 2009, WINDFAERER debuted their well-received demo, Glorybound. According to Nocturnal Cult, “The carefree and laid-back rural countryside of hilly and forested European landscapes finds new life and breathes once again within the structure of WINDFAERER’s songs.” The demo set the pathway for their first full length, Tribus (2010), and hefty critically-acclaimed EP, Solar (2012), in which they artfully combined epic folk with the allure of Gothenburg-style death metal and the grit of Scandinavian black metal. In a near perfect rating, Stereokiller dubbed the record, “absolutely spectacular,” while The Metal Crypt opined, “How a band with this much talent and ability remains unsigned is a mystery to me…”

On their most recent effort, Tenebrosum, WINDFAERER casts off the edge of black metal and takes the listener on a spiritual journey of discovery, embarking into the unknown, treacherous seas. The album is named after the archaic term for the Atlantic Ocean (“Mare Tenebrosum”), meaning “sea of darkness.” “From Euskadi and to Hyperborea, leaving Finisterra behind!”

Tenebrosum finds WINDFAERER building upon their previous release, Solar. Powerful violins are immersed in a battering ram of dynamic metal riffing, painting a scene with every passage. The sounds on Tenebrosum can be used as a soundtrack to venerate Gaia or as a rousing heavy metal battle cry. Tenebrosum was recorded at Frightbox Recording throughout 2014 and mixed and mastered by Rob Torres. With Tenebrosum, WINDFAERER have truly forged “a monument to the iron within our veins.”

In celebration of its forthcoming unveiling, today No Clean Singing is offering up opening track, “Celestial Supremacy,” for public appreciation noting, “With hammering riffs, thundering drums, and a squalling lead guitar, ‘Celestial Supremacy’ immediately conjures vivid images of storm-tossed seas. The music is accented by Ben Karas’ violin performance, which is both beautiful and searing, while guitarist Michael Gonçalves’ passionate, bleeding-edge howls and shrieks enhance the music’s driving intensity. There is blood-pumping fury in the song, as well as captivating melody, as the band weave together elements of black metal and melodic death metal to produce a riveting, powerhouse piece of music that hits with the force of a gale.”

WINDFAERER: EP From Iberian Black Metal Storytellers Streaming At Stereokiller

Friday, July 20th, 2012

Solar, the brand new EP from blackened metalsmiths WINDFAERER, is now available. Far from simply a “tide-you-over” release between albums, the self-released EP bears an immense 35 minutes of material through six epic tales, and the best material to be released yet from this talented and original New Jersey-based outfit. Elements of contemporary black metal go head-on into folk metal territory, injecting copious amounts of violin and folk songwriting into an epic, battlestrewn environment.

This week Stereokiller, who stated in a killer 4.95/5 review of Solar “…as long as a few albums of this caliber come out every few years, I will be satisfied…”, are hosting a stream of the entire EP now RIGHT HERE.

Translating to “one who travels with the wind,” as in a vessel at sea, WINDFAERER began as a means of self expression for guitarist/bassist/vocalist Michael Gonçalves, inspired by his Hispanic/Iberian heritage and fueled by his passion for extreme music. With WINDFAERER he focused his energies on creating a melodic, blasting and emotional entity and eventually recruited like-minded musicians in violinist Benjamin Karas and drummer JP Andrade. The self-released follow-up to the band’s critically-acclaimed Tribus debut was recorded with Bobby Torres at Frightbox Recording in Clifton, New Jersey and offers up seven tracks of sadistic beauty laden with elements of black and melodic death metal while exuding a folkloric edge.

“…as long as a few albums of this caliber come out every few years, I will be satisfied. This is absolutely spectacular. 4.95/5″ – Stereokiller

“The swirling tremolo guitar melodies and soulful solo’s were as entrancing as the hammering drums and thrumming bass were galvanizing. The caustic vocals added an extra layer of bleeding passion to the mix. And the song has a brutal, bang-up, bass-heavy finish, too.” – No Clean Singing

“Featuring a sound reminiscent of the UK’s Forefather with a strong melodic black metal presence, the atmospheric intentions of Sear Bliss and folk metal’s best…” – Metaltome.com

WINDFAERER: New Track Stream Posted

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Garden State blackened metal troupe WINDFAERER are currently streaming “A Glimpse of Light,” the second track off their new EP, Solar.

Literally meaning “one who travels with the wind,” as in a vessel at sea, WINDFAERER began as a means of self expression for guitarist/bassist/vocalist Michael Gonçalves, inspired by his Hispanic/Iberian heritage and fueled by his passion for extreme music. With WINDFAERER, he focused his energies on creating a melodic, blasting and emotional entity and eventually recruited like-minded musicians in violinist Benjamin Karas and drummer JP Andrade.

Gonçalves notes: “This music is a vessel for my expression. WINFAERER is not to follow trends or be part of a scene of some sort; it is about independence and being true. Solar feels like a healthy progression for WINDFAERER’s music,” he continues. “I’ve included more input from my bandmates in the writing process and we’re excited to show the world our brand of metal with this EP. We are more energized than ever to keep creating.”

Earsplit PR To Host Precious Metal NYC Show June 18th

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

That’s right tri-state riot-seekers, the fine folks who have run New York City’s venerable Precious Metal Monday night metal shows for the past six years finally bit off more than they can chew, and have offered Earsplit PR a full night to curate! The debauchery will take place Monday, June 18th, as always at Precious Metal’s steady home at the Lit Lounge on the Lower East Side, and as always, run by Curran Reynolds (Wetnurse, Today Is The Day). With four Earsplit-related audio terror units taking the stage that night, ears will be scathed from 9pm until midnight, with plenty of depravity to prevail far into the morning hours.

Elizabeth, New Jersey-based trio WINDFAERER — the brainchild of young Earsplit henchmen Michael Goncalves — will raise fists with their epic, violin-infused Iberian folk metal, while the metallic, Danzig worship of Connecticut’s NIGHTBITCH (featuring members of Ipsissimus) will bring the ragers out in throngs. The dual-bassist dementia from NYC-based AmRep-gone-deathstomp quartet THE YEAR IS ONE (fronted by known Guitar World photographer/writer Jimmy Hubbard) will get gnarly alongside our close comrades in Brooklyn’s most enraged speed metal/hardcore bastard brigade, VISE MASSACRE, celebrating their self-released Expendable Humans LP. Between the beatings, the congregation will be serenaded by the beats and charm (and badass hat) of DJ Mike SOS (SEIZURE CRYPT/S.O.S.).

Anybody in the vicinity that night come on out, and kiss your Tuesday goodbye.

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

American blackened metal warriors WINDFAERER will unleash their new EP entitled Solar within the coming weeks. The self-released follow-up to the band’s critically-acclaimed Tribus debut, was recorded with Bobby Torres at Frightbox Recording in Clifton, New Jersey and will include seven tracks of violent beauty laden with elements of black and melodic death metal while exuding a folkloric edge.

The title represents a unity of the celestial and infernal forces that govern mankind. Compared to Tribus, the lyrics have become more personal and abstract. Solar is WINDFAERER being a more confident entity.”

New Jersey Folk Metal Horde WINDFAERER Post New Tracks

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

New Jersey folk metal horde WINDFAERER — M. Gonçalves [Vocals, Guitars, Bass], JP Andrade [Percussion] and Valèek [Violin] — recently posted two new tracks to their official MySpace page.

“These Walls (Frozen In Time)” and “This Beautiful Death” (which features bagpipe work by Sevan Kirder, formerly of Eluveitie) come off the trio’s debut full-length, Tribus. Check out the tracks here: http://www.myspace.com/windfaerer. Tribus was recorded and mixed at Frightbox Recording (Clifton, NJ) by Bobby Torres and follows the band’s two-song demo Glorybound, released last year to mass underground accolades.

Said main songwriter Goncalves of the new tunes: “Tribus is in essence a collection of everyday themes set in a time of Iberian legend. The songs touch upon rebellion against Romans in ancient Hispania and Lusitania, expansion to new lands, as well as voyaging into the unknown. I’m excited about the way everything sounds and how it all came together. I’ve had this vision for a while and it’s almost euphoric to be able to finally realize it!”

Further details on Tribus to follow shortly…

“I will summarize the work of WINDFAERER with a word: perfect!” - Pest Webzine

“If you were to hear Glorybound without knowing who the band was you would be taken aback, and never would you realize that this is a band so early on in their career. Expect big things from the very impressive new band!” 8.5/10 – Evil Inquisition

“WINDFAERER may make a name for themselves in the Pagan metal genre, and you may want to check them out.” – Metal Flows In My Veins

“The folk-inspired metal scene is at bursting point, so is there really room for another band in that genre? Well, with WINDFAERER, the answer is a resounding yes.” - Zero Tolerance
