WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM: The New York Times Streams New Instrumental LP; Celestite 2014 West Coast Tour Begins Next Week

Tuesday, July 1st, 2014

One week ahead of its looming release date next Tuesday, July 8th, international news resource, The New York Times, is hosting an exclusive worldwide listen to Celestite, the new instrumental LP from Olympia, Washington’s WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM.

The NY Times stream of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s Celestite from beginning to end sees brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver’s new opus in the paper’s exclusive Press Play features. The fully synth-composed companion to their lauded 2011-released Celestial Lineage LP, Celestite is a far cry from the blackened maelstrom WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM more typically delivers on their albums. Produced by Randall Dunn, the instrumental passages on Celestite reflect the tracks of its predecessor in a whole new light, with more than forty-five minutes of rich, otherworldly, synthesizer-constructed works which more resemble a sci-fi/horror soundtrack or meditative musical experience.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s Celestite can be heard in its entirety through the New York Times Press Play post, at THIS LOCATION.

Celestite will see release on their WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s newly-founded Artemisia Records worldwide next Tuesday, July 8th, on CD, LP and digital formats. Orders for the record can be placed HERE.

The band will tour the West Coast beginning just days after the release of the new LP, yet as Celestite focuses on droning, ambient, soundtracks, this nine-city trip will see the band in their full-backline black metal form, playing a full heavy set, including older material which they have never performed live. The tour opens in WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s hometown on July 11th, followed by performances in Bellingham, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Support on all shows will be provided by Oakland psychedelic noise troupe, Nommo Ogo, the two bands also joined through the tour by D A Terrence, A God Or Another, Druden, Volahn, Lycus and others, including Dispirit as direct support on the San Francisco date.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Celestite 2014 Tour Dates:
7/11/2014 Capital Theatre Backstage – Olympia, WA w/ Nommo Ogo, D A Terence [tickets]
7/12/2014 Shakedown – Bellingham, WA w/ Nommo Ogo, A God Or Another [tickets]

“… you will hear shades of John Carpenter, nefarious 80s horror soundtracks, and, to relate it to the kids of today, Zombi, Steve Moore, much of the Holodeck roster, and Umberto. Tremolo-picking may be a thing currently on hold, but I definitely don’t mind the substitute…” – Noisey | Vice

“…despite the lack of blast beats and some shrieking dude, Celestite still feels more black metal than, say, Alcest’s latest… it’s all ambience. Some of it creepy, some of it relaxing.” – Decibel Magazine

“…Celestite follows in the grand black metal tradition of trading blast beats and suffocating guitars for pensive synths and slow motion… they offset the heaviness with airy synths and flutes, getting closer to Dark Side of the Moon outtakes than Under a Funeral Moon.” – Pitchfork

“Celestite is somewhere on the scale between Bathory, The Alan Parsons Ladyhawke soundtrack, and uncharted territory. Aaron and Nathan Weaver built a new album atop the weird mix buried bedrock of sounds from their Celestial Lineage release and made a new record on top of it. The result is an oddly moving space odyssey of Dark Crystal worthy trance out numbers.” – Metal Riot

“In essence, Wolves in The Throne Room are much closer to Pink Floyd in this album than to, let’s say, early Ulver or Darkthrone. Their use of synths is nothing short of grand…” – Cvlt Nation

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Premieres New Movement Via Noisey; July West Coast Tour Details Expanded

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014

As Cascadian black metal pioneers, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, prepare to release their latest LP, Celestite, another single from the expansive album has been unleashed exclusively via Vice Magazine’s music portal, Noisey.

A synth-driven companion to their lauded 2011-released Southern Lord LP,Celestial Lineage, the Randall Dunn-produced Celestite LP is a far cry from the expected blackened maelstrom WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM fans are used to experiencing. Void of vocals, guitars and percussion, the instrumental passages on Celestite reflect the tracks of its predecessor in a whole new light, with more than forty-five minutes of rich, otherworldly, synthesizer-constructed works which more resemble a sci-fi/horror soundtrack or meditative musical experience than a metal album. The record’s second track, “Initiation at Neudeg Alm” — the parallel to Celestial Lineage’s “Subterranean Initiation” — provides perhaps some of the more sinister, ominous elements of the Celestite experience with a condensed, dirge-driven and yet still pristine six-minute journey into cerebral realms.

“Initiation at Neudeg Alm” is now playing via Noisey at THIS LOCATION.

Listen to the previously-released “Celestite Mirror” from the LP via Pitchfork HERE.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM will systematically release Celestite on their own newly-founded Artemisia Records worldwide on July 8th, on CD, LP and digital formats. Preorders for the record can be found HERE.

Just days subsequent to the album’s release, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM will traverse the West Coast on a nine-date tour. However, while Celestite focuses exclusively on layered, droning ambience, this West Coast tour will feature the band in their anticipated, full-backline black metal form.  Their unique and fully devastating delivery will be unleashed onto their fans including older material which they have never performed live.  Opening the tour in their hometown of Olympia on July 11th, WITTR will forage through Bellingham, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and San Diego before closing down with a final show in Los Angeles on July 20th. Support for WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM on the tour will be provided by Oakland psychedelic noise troupe, Nommo Ogo. Additional support will be provided throughout the tour by D A Terrence, A God Or Another, Druden, Volahn, Lycus and others, including direct support on the San Francisco show by Dispirit.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Celestite Tour 2014:

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Releases Track From Upcoming Instrumental LP Through Pitchfork

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

As Cascadian duo, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, prepares for the release of Celstite — the instrumental companion to their 2011 Celestial Lineage LP — Pitchfork offers the public a foretaste of the impending album with an exclusive stream of its magnum opus, “Celestite Mirror.”

With over forty-five minutes of stunning, reworked versions of the powerful black metal anthems that surged on Celestial Lineage, on Celestite, the band takes a deeper excursion into the crystalline synthesizer-driven domains that have long intrigued them. With the aid of producer Randall Dunn, they unearthed a hidden soundscape that is only loosely tethered to their familiar sound, yet is still unmistakably the work of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM. The scores of renowned sound-sculptors like Carpenter and Eno merge with the band’s Pacific Northwestern inspirations and through a literal wall of vintage synth gear, the previous album is here fully re-imagined and delivered on a parallel existence to its predecessor. The cover art visually enhances these expansive passages with an otherworldly forest vision, a collaboration created by Rachel Carns and WITTR’s Nathan Weaver.

“Celestite Mirror,” the most extensive of Celestite’s works, is a nearly fifteen-minute excursion into exploratory soundscapes as vast and beautiful as the band’s surrounding woodlands, and is now playing at mega entertainment portal, Pitchfork, who issues, “WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM build from an eerie drift of synth glow and gentle bass-drum booms into a Vangelis-sized organ roar. Ahead of the halfway mark, they back into a Manuel Gottsching-like series of flickers and clicks, dispersing the darkness they once conjured. They manage a series of heavy-pawed doom riffs toward the end, but they offset the heaviness with airy synths and flutes, getting closer to Dark Side Of The Moon outtakes than Under A Funeral Moon.”

Discover what lies in wait on Celestite with a glimpse into the “Celestite Mirror” via Pitchfork now at THIS LOCATION.

Celestite will see release in North America on July 8th through the band’s own newly forged label, Artemisia Records, with digipak CD, gatefold LP and digital download editions pending. Preorders are now available RIGHT HERE.

While Celesite bears new “non-metal” and fully synth-based output, the album does not represent a “change in direction” for WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM as a whole. In fact, the duo will once again join forces with additional musical cohorts this Summer and bring their torrid and transcendental blackened whirlwind back to the masses this year, beginning with a West Coast tour this Summer. From July 11th through the 20th, WITTR will raid their hometown of Olympia Washington followed by Bellingham, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Diego and Los Angeles. Additional tour dates will follow over the coming months.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Tour Dates:
7/11/2014 Capital Theatre Backstage – Olympia, WA [tickets]

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Announces Release Date Of Celestite; Tour Dates Confirmed

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

Excitement has been growing since WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM announced the unexpected release of Celestite, an instrumental, experimental companion record to 2011’s Celestial Lineage.

Celestite sees the band take a deeper excursion into the crystalline synthesizer-driven domains that have long intrigued them. With the aid of producer Randall Dunn, the band unearthed a hidden soundscape that is only loosely tethered to their familiar sound, yet is still unmistakably the work of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM. We are pleased to confirm the North American release date for Celestite as July 8th, 2014, marking the maiden release on the band’s new label, Artemisia Records, which will be their outlet for future recordings. The cover art and track listing for the album have now been revealed.

Celestite Track Listing:
1. Turning Ever Towards The Sun
2. Initiation at Neudeg Alm
3. Bridge of Leaves
4. Celestite Mirror
5. Sleeping Golden Storm

Additional information on the creation of the album as well as audio samples will be released in the coming weeks.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM will also return to the road this Summer in conjunction with the release of Celestite, with a run of West Coast North American July tour dates just announced and more to follow.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Tour Dates:
7/11/2014 Capital Theatre Backstage – Olympia, WA
7/12/2014 Shakedown – Bellingham, WA
7/13/2014 The Venue – Vancouver, BC
7/14/2014 Crocodile – Seattle, WA
7/15/2014 Star Theatre – Portland, OR
7/17/2014 Slim’s – San Francisco, CA
7/18/2014 Catalyst Atrium – Santa Cruz, CA
7/19/2014 Che Café – San Diego, CA
7/20/2014 Echoplex – Los Angeles, CA

Since 2002, over the course of four studio albums and hundreds of live performances, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM has refracted the transcendent and mythic aspects of black metal through their own idiosyncratic Cascadian prism. The resulting essence is music that is intimately linked to the wild lands of the Pacific Northwest.

Their songs explore the hidden world of magic that one accesses through dreams, visions and music. As the mind altering pulse of the drums merges with seemingly infinite layers of guitar, an ocean-deep psychedelic soundscape coalesces. Time slows down, a portal opens and the blazing metal riffs collapse and shift into a dirge that invokes a misty other-world. In their songs, rain-drenched spectres loom at the edge of the woods. Ancient cedar beings stir beneath their wet moss robes.

In the Autumn of 2011, their work reached a new level of refinement with the release of Celestial Lineage. In contrast to the bleakly hypnotic architecture of 2008’s Black Cascade, or the more orthodox forms of their earlier works, Two Hunters and Diadem of 12 Stars, Celestial Lineage moved into a more expansive and visionary territory.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Reveal Details On New Recordings

Tuesday, January 28th, 2014

Following the November release of their BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini two-track live 12” via Southern Lord, new recordings from WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM have been confirmed for a 2014 release. Following several months of anticipation, the Cascadian black metal clan comprised of brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver now humbly unveil their impending full-length release, Celestite.

Taking a different approach than their previous LPs, Celestite is a completely newly envisioned, parallel-universe version of Celestial Lineage, the beautifully blackened fourth studio full-length epic WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM released via Southern Lord in 2011. Celestite arises with a whole new, ethereal approach. There are no drums and no vocals. Rather, deep, heavy crystalline synthesizer journeying, Eno-inspired analog processing and arcane acoustic instrumentation expand upon dimensions folded within the universe of Celestial Lineage.

The Weavers tell us: “To make Celestite, we delved into the subterranean sonics that are buried in the mix of Celestial Lineage. We isolated them, processed them and took this unearthed soundscape as our starting point. Upon this base we recorded an entirely new album. Some melodies from Celestial Lineage are recognizable, but these familiar sounds appear as ghosts, barely tethered to the original compositions. This new album is an unorthodox foray; a fully instrumental, experimental companion record to Celestial Lineage. We left some work undone with Celestial Lineage. The recording of that album in the Winter of 2011 was a monumental project for us personally, and the creative fire from those recording sessions was still burning. This recording process was an opportunity to journey into our own inner universe to complete that which needed to be completed.”

Paired once again with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Master Musicians Of Bukkake), Celestite came to fruition at Avast Studios and WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s own Olympia-based studio Owl Lodge. While cloistered during the recording sessions they made use of a mammoth arsenal of crumbling vintage equipment including a Serge Modular System, Korg Poly6, Korg MS20, Korg Mono/Poly, Roland Juno 106, Roland Jupiter 6, Roland Super jx10, Jomox Airbase 99, Access Virus and more. The album also features a guest wind ensemble including friends Josiah Boothby on French Horn, Steve Moore (Earth, Sunn O))), Stebmo) on Trombone, and both Mara Winter and Veronica Dye on flute.

The upcoming release of Celestite is doubly exciting for WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM as it will mark another new venture for the duo; the inaugural release on their own new label, Diadem Records. The band states, “Diadem Records is the imprint we created to release Celestite and future albums. Most importantly for us, working on this album has revealed a whole new vein of creative energy for WITTR. Now that the long trip of creating this album is finished, our appetite is whetted for future projects, thus we feel it necessary to pre-empt the inevitable chatter that will accompany the release of this record. WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM has not permanently abandoned the guitar and drums! We sense that one day — perhaps sooner, perhaps later — we will be inspired to return to our stacks of amplifiers and cabinets to create new music.”

Stay tuned for samples of the music created for Celestite as well as the album’s cover art, official release dates, pressing information and more to be announced in the weeks ahead.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM: Recordings Penned For 2014 Release

Thursday, December 19th, 2013

Barring the recent release of their BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini live 12”, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM have been keeping a low profile since the conclusion of the world-spanning tour that supported their most recent LP, Celestial Lineage. Now, word comes that the band, along with producer Randall Dunn, has been quietly cultivating the next chapter in their ongoing musical evolution. While little else is known of the impending recordings as of now, the brothers Weaver have confirmed that, the music is currently in the final stages, being prepared for release in the first quarter of 2014. An official communiqué on WITTR’s impending 2014 actions will be announced very early in the New Year.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini was released in late November, once again via Southern Lord Recordings, who also unveiled the act’s acclaimed second LP, Two Hunters (2007), the Malevolent Grain EP and Black Cascade LP (2009), and most recently the triumphant Celestial Lineage LP (2011). The BBC 12” contains the massive “Prayer of Transformation” and “Thuja Magus Imperium” — pieces culled from Celestial Lineage and recorded live at the BBC’s storied Maida Vale Studios while WITTR was in the midst of a tour of the UK. While far from a full length LP, BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini served to tide anxious fans over, while new production was still being organized.

Immediately after their 2004 inception, Olympia, Washington’s WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM have been leaders in the forward advancement of American metal, and have since been a worldwide force in pushing the boundaries of the black metal genus into new realms. The band’s trance-inducing delivery of their anthems has been witnessed by fans internationally in the live setting, as WITTR has trekked across most of the habitable continents over the past decade. While they’ve performed at massive festivals including Roadburn, Hell Fest and Roskilde, the band also veers far from the well-trod paths, booking shows at unconventional venues and art spaces in addition to performing in barns, on beaches and in forests, bringing their wholly underground and uncompromising ethos to fruition with their fans.

New information on exactly what WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM will deliver in 2014 will be released early in January.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM: Southern Lord Confirms BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini

Wednesday, October 9th, 2013

On Friday, October 21st, 2011 – one month after releasing their fourth studio album, Celestial Lineage, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM recorded two live tracks at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios. Southern Lord now confirms a special vinyl release of these sessions confirmed to hit later this Fall. It seems only fitting that Olympia’s earthen black metal expanders, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, would add their name to the roster of acts who have recorded at the Maida Vale studios, the place where the sounds of contemporary and outstanding artists throughout the last century of popular music have been documented for the ages.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s shadow, cast long and eerie from their campfire of the arcane, eclipses the hordes of black metal clones and drones, hewing raw nuggets of inspired music from rich seams of extreme metal and astral vibrations. “Prayer of Transformation” and “Thuja Magus Imperium” are the two tracks recorded on that day, taken from their lauded album Celestial Lineage and spanning two sides of vinyl and twenty minutes. Entitled BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini, this session is testament to the band’s ability to inspire awe with homespun strands of metaphysical ambiance and painstakingly flexed sinews of metal, and is a must for all fans of the band as well as followers of contemporary metal.

Southern Lord will release BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini in North America on November 26th, 2013.

BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini Track Listing:

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM Issue Status Update; Band Self-Reissues Lauded Two Hunters 2xLP

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Following many months of touring throughout 2011 and into 2012 in support of their fourth full-length release, Celestial Lineage, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM this week issue an official statement on the current state of the band as well as some insight on what the future may hold for the brothers Weaver.

“After months of journeying we’re settled back into our life at home. Soft, warm breezes, the calls of Ravens and Eagles, the scent of Cedar and Salt Water. The Northwest Summer is a soothing balm to the stresses and strains of the road and the alchemic pressure-cooker of the recording studio. But it has been a great two years for us. We are so proud of Celestial Lineage, and our tours in the United States and Europe were inspiring and full of good experiences. Contrary to sensationalist rumor, we have no desire or intention to end Wolves In The Throne Room. It is very possible that future albums will be recorded. Live performances might transpire. But for now, we are reconnecting to hearth and home. We’d like to extend our heartfelt thank to everyone who has helped and supported us over the years. Playing this music has transformed us as people, and we are blessed to have shared this path with so many other travelers.”

In other news, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM recently pressed a brand new vinyl pressing of their landmark 2008 full-length Two Hunters. The album likely considered the “fan favorite” from the band’s catalog of releases, Two Hunters has undeniably helped elevate WITTR into the upper echelon of contemporary extreme metal as well as having a substantial impact on USBM in general. Having remained out-of-print on wax since its initial release, the band has taken it upon themselves to self-release the new pressing. The double 180-gram LP layout features a thick, full color Stoughton gatefold tip-on jacket, full color printed inner-sleeves for each LP, and an embossed gold foil stamped logo on front cover. Additionally this version includes an extended intro to the track “Cleansing,” featuring vocals by Jessika Kenney, as well as the nearly seventeen-minute-long vinyl-only bonus track “To Reveal.” The Two Hunters 2xLP is available direct from the band now AT THIS LOCATION.

The Weaver brothers will issue more info on WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s future in due time.
