GODS AND QUEENS: Fall European Tour Confirmed; Three Releases Now Streaming

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Philadelphia-based indie bandits GODS AND QUEENS have confirmed a new date European tour, set to take place through most of November and into December, with twenty-five shows confirmed at press time. Having already toured Europe four times since 2009 — three of the trips fully self-booked — this latest venture sees the band again taking their angular, nonconformist rock and unpredictable live show to European fans, invading underworld venues they’ve antagonized previously as well as new scenes.

GODS AND QUEENS have almost been killed driving off a cliff in the Massif Central region of France, accidentally stabbed their European driver early this year, resulting in 38 stitches, and once finished a five-week tour of Europe with a broken-footed drummer. Besides headlining several of their own DIY-booked Euro tours, they’ve also toured stateside with Coliseum, Blacklisted, Young Widows and more. Their live shows consist of a raucous blend of volume and seriousness, blatant antagonism aimed directly towards the audience, or ditching their own songs mid-set to play the entire Land Speed record by Hüsker Dü.

The GODS AND QUEENS lineup is led by guitar/vocals Jamie Getz (ex-Lickgoldensky, ex-Versoma), joined by bassist Ben Roysden (Fire In the Hearts And Minds) and drummer Jeff Ziga (Armalite, Affirmative Action Jackson). Existing in their own musical purgatory — too heavy to be an idie rock band, yet too indie rock to be a heavy band — they play noisy, melodic rock, not far off from, and directly influenced by 1990′s stalwarts Unwound, Lowercase, June Of 44, Lush or Lungfish, yet they mostly get booked on metal shows. With releases out via Robotic Empire, Adagio830 and Sons Of Vesta, all records in the GODS AND QUEENS catalog are Untitled, and all of their song titles are “Untitled” followed by a number. Stream all three Untitled records now on their Bandcamp page.

GERM To Release Debut Album Via Eisenwald; Title + Sample Tracks Revealed

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

GERM is the solo project of Tim (Austere (rip), Grey Waters,  ex-Nazxul, etc). The debut album, Wish, is a journey into a twisted mind. From horrific shrieks to beautiful vocal melodies, from ferocious blast beats to haunting atmospheric passages and everything in between, Wish is everything fans of an emotive style of heavy music could have hoped for. A bright, bizarre and simultaneously catchy fusion of elegant heavy rock music, furious back metal moments, Jean-Michel Jarre-influenced electronics and even classical influences. The voyage lasts for over 40 minutes, breaking through genres and niches, without losing touch to elegant and remarkable epicness, that covers the entire album. Prepare to feel dazed and attracted.

Preliminary mixes from the album can be streamed here:

Your Smile Mirrors The Sun” & “Asteroids Of Sorrow

GERM was conceived in 2003 to create something that combined the atmospheric black metal and rock for which Tim is known with his love of classical, pop and electronic styles of music combined with a striking visual aspect to accompany that music. In 2006, a three-song EP was recorded, but never released. One track from the EP, “Raving Mad With Sadness,” was uploaded to MySpace, and to this day gains considerable praise. This early song shows glimpses of what was to come, featuring an extended electronic breakdown and clean vocals mixed with Tim’s hellish shrieks. After this song appeared, things again fell silent.

After almost three years of inactivity, Tim entered SLS studios in October 2009 to begin tracking GERM’s debut full-length album. However, not long after, he was again focused on other projects, this time composing pop songs for various major labels and producers, as well as working as a session drummer for various bands. As of February 2011, Tim resumed work on the album, this time with the determination to see it through. The progress was slow, but Wish is finally complete and will see a release through Eisenwald in January 2012.!/GermOfficial

“It’s progressive metal in the truest sense of the word. This album is as raw and musically uncompromising as they come.” – Alternative Matter

Selfmadegod Records New Release Update

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The audio-violence professionals at Poland’s Selfmadegod Records have confirmed the details of some upcoming releases being prepared for deployment later this year and in the early months of 2012, including ENCOFFINATION and STORMCROW, as well as split releases between CRYPTICUS/SCAREMAKER and MODUS DELICTI/ENEMY REIGN.

Death dealers ENCOFFINATION will plague the Earth with their new opus, O’ Hell, Shine In Thy Whited Sepulchres this November. Picking up where they left off with last year’s Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh, this collection of new hymns redefines and magnifies ENCOFFINATION’s signature sound; suffocating doom wrapped in the pure stench of death. Based on Ghoat’s own experiences of working in the funeral industry, O’ Hell, Shine In Thy Whited Sepulchres is a concept album… not in the linear sense, but abstract; from the death of the human form to the sacrifice of flesh into the Earth. The album will be released via Selfmadegod Records this November; stay tuned for an official street date and more info on this anticipated slab of bereavement as it approaches.

Selfmadegod will reissue the long out-of-print sole full-length from infamous Oakland-based crust/death metal outfit STORMCROW in November. The now defunct act stormed onto the scene in 2005 with the release of their debut and only LP, Enslaved In Darkness, followed by a series of brutal split releases with Sanctum, Skaven, Massgrave, Laudanum and Coffins over the next four years. This official worldwide reissue of Enslaved In Darkness will reintroduce the album’s cruel Amebix-style crust infused with metallic riffs; a must-have for Bolt Thrower, Axegrinder, and Hellshock devotees. STORMCROW’s ominous tone built of thunderous drums, chunky guitar rhythms, intricate time patterns, and intensely dark vocals have helped the band become a well-respected name within the crust and metal scenes. The release also features artwork done by Rob Middleton (Deviated Instinct) and was recorded by Greg Wilkinsen of Brainoil.

Selfmadegod Records has also confirmed two new brutalizing split CD releases for the months ahead.

First up is a split between horror-inspired acts CRYPTICUS and SCAREMAKER. Featuring four new tracks from old-school death metal outfit CRYPTICUS, and their original tales of deadly scarecrows, black magic, and an undead HP Lovecraft, followed by five tracks from death thrashers SCAREMAKER’s thrashing death inspired by classic horror films such as Madman, Burnt Offerings, and Trick or Treat. This vicious juncture of two horror/gore-obsessed bands will appropriately feature amazing cover artwork from none other than the mighty Putrid, and is set to drop sometime in late November/early December.

And following in early 2012, a devastating split between Italian serialgrinders MODUS DELICTI and Colorado-based death squad ENEMY REIGN; one Selfmadegod has already dubbed as “the sickest split ever.” MODUS DELICTI was formed in 2004 by Clod the Ripper (Septycal Gorge, Blasphemer, etc.) and has since unleashed a trio of splits, an EP and a full-length album, in addition to multiple compilation appearances. The lyrics of these new songs are taken from original letters sent to the police from infamous serial killers including BTK, David Berkowitz and Jack the Ripper, and the music is tighter than ever, as always blending elements of brutal death and grindcore. Previously led by former Skinless vocalist Sherwood Webber, ENEMY REIGN’s lineup also features drummer Andon Guenther, co-creator of Sick Drummer Magazine. Formed in Denver in 2008, ENEMY REIGN self-released their debut Means To A Dead End EP in 2008, which brought immediate worldwide acclaim, eventually gaining official European distribution via Neurotic Records. Every moment of these tracks rage with the intense ENEMY REIGN concoction of early 90’s death metal, late 80’s grindcore and brutal East Coast hardcore, and are the last to feature the signature vocals of Webber, who has since left the band.

More specific information on these and other new Selfmadegod Records hostility will be announced in the coming weeks.
