Chicago, Illinois-based post-hardcore band SWEET COBRA presents a video companion for their special cover of “I’ve Been Riding With The Ghost” by Songs: Ohia. The video makes its debut through a premiere hosted by BrooklynVegan.

While recording their anxiously awaited new LP, SWEET COBRA took some time to pay homage to Songs: Ohia, recording a contemplative cover of “I’ve Been Riding With The Ghost.” The track was recorded by Allen Epley and Eric Abert (Shiner, The Life And Times), and mixed By Kurt Ballou (Converge) at God City, the song also features synth from Epley. The new video for the track was created by Bobby Marcos (Cloakroom, Docma).

Writes SWEET COBRA’s Jason Gagovski, “We had been working on some pre-production recordings for our new album with Allen Epley at the helm at his studio and decided to work on this cover to sort of break things up. I’ve always felt a deep connection to Jason Molina’s music on a lot of different levels. Originally intended for a vinyl split with Cloakroom (they covered ‘Steve Albini’s Blues’), at a certain point both bands just decided to get these covers out on Bandcamp instead of waiting for a vinyl release. We sent the tracks to Kurt Ballou for mixing, and Bobby Markos made the video from found 8mm footage.”

He continues, “I’ve been wanting to cover a Jason Molina song for a long time – partly as an homage to my days in Bloomington, Indiana at the same time Molina was active there, and also because his music took on a timeless quality that has transcended into something much larger in the years since it was released.”

BrooklynVegan writes with the premiere, “The Songs: Ohia original is already kind of on the rocking side as far as Songs: Ohia goes, but SWEET COBRA‘s version is a little heavier and doomier, without losing the charm of the original.”

SWEET COBRA Live:
2/10/2022 The Empty Bottle – Chicago, IL w/ Documa, BirdHands

The dedication of its members and the band’s storied lineage has helped make SWEET COBRA a household name to fans of post-hardcore and bold rock internationally, and a staple within the bustling music scene of their hometown of Chicago. Founded by former members of a wide array of notable underground acts and boasting the fury and angular qualities of their hardcore/noise-rock/metal roots with a more straightforward rock rhythm and delivery, the band came into existence and toured alongside the likes of Pelican, Russian Circles, Coliseum, Doomriders, The Life And Times, Young Widows, and more.

SWEET COBRA is in the process of completing their new album, Threes, the long-awaited follow-up to their Earth LP which was released via Magic Bullet Records in 2015. The new record will see release later this year through drummer Jason Gagovski’s long-running label Hawthorne Street Records. Watch for further intel to be issued as it develops.
