GRAVES AT SEA was forged in 2002 by friends Nick Phit and Nathan Misterek, with then-members Roger Williams and Steve Klatz (RIP). After self-releasing a demo titled Documents Of Grief, they toured extensively and were quickly noticed by Greg Anderson of Southern Lord/SunnO))), who released their Cirrohosis/Atavist Arise seven-inch in 2004. Later in 2005, the band released a split with friends Asunder on Life Is Abuse (CD) and 20 Buck Spin (vinyl). In 2007, GRAVES AT SEA went through a lineup change when Misterek moved to Oakland, California and Phit moved to Portland, Oregon. In 2008, after playing two final shows with Chiyo Nukaga (Noothgrush) on drums and Miguel Veliz (ex-Sourvein, The Roller) on bass, the band broke up. Four years later, however, they decided to reunite with Nukaga on drums and Greg Wilkinson (Brainoil) on bass, but due to touring constraints, Nukaga and Wilkinson decided to step down.
2013 marked the band’s first venture to Europe, with a lengthy tour, in addition to a string of West Coast performances. 2014 brought forth their first new material since 2005 – GRAVES AT SEA issued a split LP with Sourvein on Seventh Rule Records at the start of their second European tour (this time with Sourvein), a journey that also included appearances at Roadburn Festival and SWR Festival. The split with Sourvein was quickly followed by an EP on Eolian Records titled This Place Is Poison and numerous live US appearances, including performances at Maryland Deathfest and California’s Day Of The Shred Festival.
GRAVES AT SEA made their Relapse debut by releasing the long-awaited full-length The Curse That Is, a tour-de-force of incredible magnitude almost fifteen years in the making. This sound, along with self-loathing lyrics of torment and demise, engulf the listener wave upon wave of aural misery. With The Curse That Is, GRAVES AT SEA has offered up their strongest, most ear-shattering material to date.
“Seriously though, these fucking riffs. Guitarist Nick Phit leads the charge with his gnarled doom grooves, but he has ample help from bassist Jeff McGarrity and drummer Bryan Sours…vocalist Nathan Misterek sounds delightfully unhinged throughout and his ‘self-loathing lyrics of torment and demise’ are, as always, the perfect complement to his pterodactyl-on-the-warpath style.” – Decibel
“An exhausting and lengthy work in nihilism…” – Consequence Of Sound
“GRAVES AT SEA‘s brand of dismal, bass-rich doom/sludge is played in such perfect concert, that when an instrument breaks away from the collective pummel, it’s a total thrill. The bass, guitars and drums here wind, groove, hammer, and plod together in perfect reciprocity, no one element any more vital or pronounced than the other.” – Cvlt Nation
“I don’t recall the last time I encountered heaviness this lumbering at the hands of just one guitar, one bass and one set of drums.” – Last Rites
“In a world of bands that wish they were EyeHateGod or Iron Monkey, GRAVES AT SEA are an often overlooked diamond among a sea of shit. They are miserable, plodding sludge, guaranteed to make you nod your head and reach for your favorite vice…” – Svbterranean
“With The Curse That Is, GRAVES AT SEA achieves that wall of rage sound… but manage to write solid songs in the process.” – PopShifter
“The Curse That Is illustrates perfectly the violence that extreme metal can project and will undeniably be appreciated and adored by anyone that’s predispose to endure such lyrical and sonic punishment.” – Music And Riots
