TAKEN BY THE SUN: Chicago Progressive/Atmospheric Doom Slayers To Play Hometown Record Release Show This Weekend; New Full-Length Out NOW

Chicago progressive/atmospheric doom slayers will play a special record release show on their home turf this weekend. Scheduled to deafen ears at Quencher’s Saloon, the band will be joined by their brethren in Scientist, Pale Horseman, Making Ghosts and Dethbeds, with future live incursions to be announced in the weeks to come.

TAKEN BY THE SUN released their self-titled full-length independently in February. Tracked almost entirely live at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio, engineered by Sanford Parker (Twilight, Voivod, Eyehategod, Yob etc.) and mastered by Collin Jordan (Eyehategod, Indian, Wovenhand, Voivod etc.) at The Boiler Room, all in Chicago, Taken By The Sun is an eight-track, forty-two minute audio expedition that recalls the confounding atmospheres of veteran sound contortionists Neurosis, Isis, Pelican, Rosetta, Mouth Of the Architect, Red Sparowes, and The Ocean.

In a recent review, The Sludgelord celebrates, “eight tracks of greatness,” further rallying, “TAKEN BY THE SUN has truly made a record that pushes the genre forward… it is rare to find this level of innovation.” Metal Insider concurs, “some of the best tracks on Taken By The Sun include ‘Fuse,’ ‘Red,’ and … ‘Detached,’ a sprawling, building mesmerizer that fully captures all of the best elements of TBTS‘s unique sound. Ultimately, though, the best way to experience this stunner of an album is to listen to it from start to finish – only then can its brilliance and majesty be completely appreciated.” Metal Injection notes, “This is absolutely worth checking out if you dig bands like … Isis, Alchemist, and, even Catharsis on some levels,” Angry Metal Guy calls the offering, “a powerfully kinetic bomb,” while The Sonic Sensory commends, “Creativity in the songwriting, constantly shifting dynamics, natural progressions and intensity throughout,” crowning it a, “very formidable debut release.”

If you missed it, sample “Fuse,” still streaming at Cvlt Nation at THIS LOCATION as well as monolithic closing track “Ornaflux” playing at The Sludgelord, at THIS LOCATION.

Spawned in 2011, TAKEN BY THE SUN features members of architectural experimental metal technicians, Scientist. Though clearly rooted within The Windy City’s venue-quaking, riff-worshipping doom and stoner metal traditions, TAKEN BY THE SUN takes their audio manifestations far beyond those confines brandishing fuzz-addled guitars, grinding bass, cavernous drums, and dry-throated vocals fused with prog metal acrobatics, lush vocal harmonies, and pedal steel twang to heighten the intensity and plain epicness of their meticulous arranged compositions. With their self-titled debut, TAKEN BY THE SUN translates the energy and diversity of their live performance in recorded form. Tracked live with only minimal subsequent overdubs, the album is faithful to both the earnestness and magnitude of the band’s sound. Multilayered, nuanced and gristly, thick gnarled riffs coil around gravel-throated voice incursions, the planet rumbles, tracks heave like the sky is breaking.
