“The combination of gracefulness, groove, and sheer heaviness that the band achieves on Upon Desolation is rare.” — Decibel Magazine
Decibel Magazine is currently streaming Upon Desolation, the latest studio offering from San Jose death metallers, MORTUOUS. The premieres comes on the eve of the record’s official unveiling via Carbonized in the United States and Extremely Rotten Productions in Europe.
Four years after their critically acclaimed debut, Through Wilderness, MORTUOUS returns with eight new tracks of sheer, twisting brutality. Upon Desolation was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, California in December 2021. The offering features violin performances on “Nothing” and “Defiled By Fire” by Andrea Morgan (Exulansis) and album artwork by Marald Van Haasteren (Necrot, After the Bombs, Baroness).
Writes Decibel, “Upon Desolation is thrillingly difficult to pin down. Incantation and Autopsy revolutionized death metal in its wild early days by cross-pollinating it with doom, but the former was mostly concerned with making it sound inhuman and evil, while the latter hitched it to a punkish groove. MORTUOUS are clear disciples of those bands when working in their death metal guise, but the way they incorporate doom elements into their sound has more in common with the elegance of the Peaceville Three, or early Katatonia. The combination of gracefulness, groove, and sheer heaviness that the band achieves on Upon Desolation is rare. It’s become their signature in a crowded death metal landscape, one they’re steadily rising to the top of.”

Formed in 2009, MORTUOUS released their critically lauded Through Wilderness debut in 2018 through a joint partnership between Carbonized Records and Tankcrimes Records in North America and Dawnbreed and Extremely Rotten Productions in Europe. The record boasted eight tracks of relentless doom and death with nods to My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Rottrevore, and Disembowelment. Later that year, the band unveiled a split 7″ with Oakland’s Scolex which made its debut at Kill-Town Death Fest VI: The Resurrection. In 2019, MORTUOUS released Lamenting Reflections, a split EP featuring now-defunct New Jersey death metalists Deform, on limited edition vinyl. The EP was dedicated to former Deform guitarist/vocalist Tim Ninerell, who took his own life in 2016. The release was followed by performances at a variety of festivals including Eternal Warfare, California Deathfest, Kill-Town Death Fest VII, and Decibel Metal And Beer Fest: Los Angeles. In 2020, the band release their long out-of-print Among The Lost and Mors Immortalis demos on CD via a joint partnership between Carbonized Records in the United States and Triumvirate Of Evil in Colombia. That same year saw the band make their first ever appearance in Mexico at Total Death Over Mexico III in Mexico City. In December 2021, MORTUOUS recorded their latest opus, Upon Desolation.
“…one of the most savage, atomic releases death metal has seen this year.” – The Razor’s Edge
“If you can’t get enough of that early ‘90s foulness delivered by the likes of Incantation, Rottrevore, Baphomet (The Dead Shall Inherit—guuuhhhh) et al, and your idea of perfect evening involves sipping formaldehyde from swanky snifters while discussing the finer points of horrifically decomposed throwback bands such as Funebrarum, Static Abyss, and any of the recent Danish invaders (Phrenelith, Undergang, Chaotian, etc.), you will surely find an endless load of fun buried in the guts of Upon Desolation.” – Last Rites
“…absolutely rancid, in a good way…a reeking tome of truly festering old school morbidity at the heart of things. If you want excellent death metal, this’ll satisfy those cravings for certain.” – Nattskog
