“GIANT SPIDER are a new trio that consists of New York City/Long Island scene veterans on their latest mission to make heavy and fucked-up music.” – Decibel Magazine
New York’s GIANT SPIDER arrives with their debut two-song EP, premiering a video for the track “Exit Plan” featuring All Out War’s Taras Apuzzo via Decibel Magazine.
GIANT SPIDER unites three veterans of the NYC and Long Island extreme music underground scene, infusing influences from across the heavy underground spectrum all baked into a radioactive atmosphere. Bassist/vocalist Richard Muller (Vise Massacre, The Last Crime, The Third Kind) conveys a fetid and obscure atmosphere of gloom through his bloodsoaked roars and filthy low-end salvo, drummer James Baldassano (Show No Mercy, Hostile Intent) delivers a thundering rhythmic attack loaded with earworm fills and rapid hooks, and guitarist Tom Meehan (Morbid Curiosity, Summary Execution) concocts guitar riffs that emanate the energy of radioactive waste. Hook-laden dissonant riffage and dreary harmonies bleed into a malformed Frankensteinian bastard of metal, punk, and hardcore while immersing the listener in tales of sci-fi and horror fantasy.
Delivering the tracks “3 Moons” and “Exit Plan,” the record’s immersive sound was engineered by Taras Apuzzo (All Out War, The Third Kind) who also supplies a searing guitar solo to “Exit Plan.” The crushing production quality perfectly captures the infectious yet atmospheric songwriting of GIANT SPIDER.
A creeped-out and dizzying video for “Exit Plan” was directed by David Brenner (Gridfailure, Diminishing), showcasing the band’s infatuation with haunting horror and science fiction cinema.
Tom Meehan reveals, “I wrote a few tunes on guitar, and started locking them down with James Baldassano, who I met through the Long Island Heavy Metal History page, on drums. Then we hit up Rich Muller for bass and vocal duties. That’s when the songs really took shape, developing into ‘Exit Plan’ and ‘3 Moons.’ Taras Apuzzo came through big time with the production, mixing, and mastering both songs, and of course providing the masterful guitar solo on ‘Exit Plan.’ Then we collaborated with Dave at Earsplit/Gridfailure who created the perfectly gloomy video for ‘Exit Plan.’”
Richard Muller adds, “In a time of desperation, light years away, lies the hidden planet of Gormock, an orbital mass of scarcity and limited resources, where only despair, turmoil, and the lack of vitality remain for what’s left of a fear-driven microcosm, similar to the human race. A combustible sphere controlled by none other than the Giant Spider alien breed.”
Decibel writes with the “Exit Plan” premiere, “Starting off with driving punk chords, bassist/vocalist Richard Muller does away with melody, immediately layering his roar with sung vocals, creating a type of dissonant effect. As they progress through the song, the riffs get heavier and slower, with hints of metallic hardcore and doom creeping further into the music. The new song is paired with a video by noise purveyor Gridfailure; the psychedelic effects, shaky camera and occasionally harsh cuts result in a nightmarish vibe.”
