Decibel Magazine is now hosting an exclusive stream of Pull Me Toward The Dark, the third album from post-punk outfit DEEPER GRAVES, which drops this Friday on Disorder Recordings.
The solo project of Jeff Wilson – also of Chrome Waves, Contrition, formerly of Nachtmystium and Wolvhammer, owner of Disorder Recordings, and more – DEEPER GRAVES serves as a deeply personal counterpoint to his work in heavier realms, favoring mood, texture, and introspection over immediacy.
Existing in the quiet spaces between weight and release – a slow-moving, atmospheric post-punk project shaped by restraint and emotional gravity – DEEPER GRAVES has unfolded as a solitary vision with Wilson handling all aspects, allowing the project to develop without compromise or external influence. The debut Open Roads introduced a sound rooted in reverberant guitars, understated rhythms, and melancholic arcs, while follow-up, The Colossal Sleep, expanded that language into darker, more immersive territory – a collection defined by slow tension and pulsing movement. Following the second album’s release, the project released several singles, including covers of The Cure and Portishead, and now prepares to deliver its third album.
With Pull Me Toward The Dark, DEEPER GRAVES continues to drift deeper inward. The album refines the project’s core elements – shadowed structure, shoegaze-inflected textures, and a quiet unease – while exploring new emotional contours. The album unfolds patiently, allowing atmosphere to lead, blurring the line between song and soundscape. There is a deliberate sense of space throughout the record, where absence is as meaningful as sound.
And rather than chasing nostalgia, DEEPER GRAVES reinterprets the spirit of post-punk and gothic rock through a modern, deeply personal lens. Pull Me Toward The Dark stands as both a continuation and a transformation — an album shaped by solitude, reflection, and the slow passage of time, inviting listeners to sit with its weight rather than escape it.
Pull Me Toward The Dark was fully performed, engineered, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Wilson who also handled its cover art and photography. Fans of Beastmilk, Killing Joke, Joy Division, The Sisters Of Mercy, and similar acts must hear DEEPER GRAVES.
Wilson offers, “While I wasn’t sure I would do another full-length for this project, this album has kind of revitalized my interest for it. A couple of these songs are some of my favorite things I’ve done. Hope you all enjoy it as well.”
Decibel writes with their stream of the album, “…it evokes the hazy guitar wash of shoegaze, the strident rhythms of classic late ’70s/early ’80s post-punk (a la the Cure and Joy Division), and a dash of early ’90s electro-industrial heaviness. The deep reverb-heavy vocals complete the melancholy vibe.”
