New Noise Magazine is hosting an exclusive stream of “Isolate,” the lead single from Ohio-based industrial metal entity ABOVE & BELOW, preceding its debut album, Suffer Decay Alone, set for June release through Disorder Recordings.
Directly following the release of Plaguewielder’s 2021-released Covenant Death album, primary member Bryce Seditz branched out in 2022 with his solo act ABOVE & BELOW. Utilizing the local noises of mines, steel mills, and the gloom of his surrounding area to create an overwhelming feeling of rejection and despair on the debut album, Suffer Decay Alone sees Seditz applying his influences from the likes of Tim Skold and 3Teeth, and taking the approach of Ministry’s Al Jourgensen, handling all songwriting and most of the production.
With Seditz handling vocals, guitar, synth programming, and engineering, Disorder Recordings owner Jeff Wilson (Chrome Waves, Deeper Graves, Contrition) helps polish off the album with bass, additional manipulation, mixing, and mastering. The album’s bold cover artwork was handled by Chris Smith. ABOVE & BELOW is an act that fans of Ministry, 3Teeth, Godflesh, Frontline Assembly, Meathook Seed, Dødheimsgard, (V.E.G.A.), Red Harvest, and Thorns should hear immediately.
With the release of the maiden single from Suffer Decay Alone, Seditz offers, “‘Isolate’ was the first song I wrote for the album. I was trying to go for a Nine Inch Nails ‘Reptile’ vibe with this one. A lot of experimentation on this track. Pretty sure I wrote the guitar riff first before anything else. It felt right. Building on top of that main riff with synths. Filling in the gaps. Just being creative and working on a new fresh idea felt great. This is also one based on a failing relationship. Feeling like you give pieces of yourself to someone who doesn’t necessarily deserve them. In a sense, you don’t get them back. Hiding behind shades of grey, meaning you’re justifying your behaviors and the mess you have yourself caught up in.”
