MY BROTHER THE WIND: Details Of New LP From Swedish Cosmic Improv Rock Act Confirmed

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Sweden’s instrumental cosmic rock quartet, MY BROTHER THE WIND, is preparing for their third studio LP, Once There Was A Time When Time And Space Were One, to see release this Autumn via Free Electric Sound, the instrumental subdivision of The Laser’s Edge.

Boasting MY BROTHER THE WIND’s expansive, entirely improvised style of spacious, psychedelic rock completely void of vocals, Once There Was A Time When Time And Space Were One was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs during a single day in January 2013, the band utilizing six and twelve string acoustic and electric guitars, mellotron, flute, bass, drums, congas and more to complete the task. The album was captured in full analog on 2″ tape courtesy of a 16 track Ampex from 1969 at Drop Out Analogue, in Åmål, Sweden, with engineering duties handled by Love Tholin, who used vintage flangers, plate reverbs and tape echoes to achieve the LP’s unrestrained sound and exceptionally organic tones, after which it was mixed by Tholin and the band, and mastered by Hans Fredriksson. Once There Was A Time When Time And Space Were One is also the first recording with the band’s new drummer Daniel Fridlund Brandt — who also handled the art direction with graphic designer Andreas Lindelöw — the lineup completed by Nicklas Barker, Mathias Danielsson, and Ronny Eriksson.

With the outfit’s four members hailing from Stockholm, Åmål, and Gothenburg, MY BROTHER THE WIND is a fully improvisational cosmic rock collective consisting of members of widely known Swedish acts Makajodama, Magnolia, Animal Daydream and most notably Anekdoten, one of the more widely recognized names in the 1990s prog rock revival. Once There Was A Time When Time And Space Were One captures the collective’s progressive soundscape qualities with incredible analog studio production. Expect forty-five sprawling minutes of the band’s most succinct material to date, recorded deep in the snowy, forested, Swedish wilderness. Those who frequent the works of Popol Vuh, Amon Duul, Sun Ra, Träd, Gräs Och Stenar, Albert Ayler, Ash Ra Tempel, Gong, Pink Floyd and other visionary, psychedelic rock artists are advised to investigate this act.

Free Electric Sound will release Once There Was A Time When Time And Space Were One via digital, CD and deluxe LP formats on October 14th. Stay tuned for audio from the album and further updates as the new album nears release.

LAGO: Phoenix Blackened Death Unit Drops Track From Debut Full-Length At No Clean Singing

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Underground metal zine, No Clean Singing, is now hosting an exclusive listen to the first single borne of Tyranny, the debut full-length from Phoenix, Arizona’s ominous deathsquad, LAGO.

After releasing their introductory Marianas EP in 2010, the year of the band’s inception, in 2012 LAGO released a two-track demo constructed by a partially revamped lineup, introducing the ideas which would become the full-length monstrosity that is now set for release as Tyranny. Recorded in the Fall of 2013 by Ryan Butler at Arcane Digital Recording (Exhumed, Phobia, Landmine Marathon) and mastered in March 2014 by Dave Shirk at Sonorous Mastering (Incantation, Exhumed, Today is the Day), Tyranny executes forty minutes of primal, pummeling death metal with a dissonant black metal edge through eight destructive tracks. A guest appearance by Jonny Davy from Job For A Cowboy is made on the track “Bring To Ruin.”

The fourth of the album’s eight works, “Concede To Oblivion” is now playing at No Clean Singing who issues of the traumatic experience, “LAGO deliver top-shelf death metal, like some hellish blackened offspring of early Morbid Angel and Disma, fully armed with an arsenal of impressive technical chops and infectious hooks. The music is suitably ominous and fearsome, but performed with distinctive flair. From this song alone, Tyranny has vaulted onto our list of highly anticipated 2014 albums.”

Stream “Concede To Oblivion” now at THIS LOCATION.

In addition to new widespread live actions from LAGO being devised, the band has sanctioned Saturday, September 20th as the date of their free hometown record release show, featuring support from a pile of additional regional underground acts.

LAGO Tyranny CD Release Show:
9/20/2014 Tempe Tavern – Phoenix, AZ w/ Sorrower, Meathook, Unholy Monarch, Cave Dweller, Deadspawn [info]

Tucson’s Battleground Records will release Tyranny on digipak CD and digital delivery on September 16th, 2014, while Swedish label Blood Harvest Records will be handling the vinyl edition. Preorder links and additional previews of the album will follow in the coming weeks.

RABBITS: Opening Track From Untoward Let Out Of The Cage Via The A.V. Club; October European Tour Dates Begin To Leak

Monday, July 28th, 2014

Today, The Onion’s A.V. Club explores the depraved burrow in which Portland’s RABBITS inhabits, letting loose a dirge-strewn new single from their upcoming third LP, Untoward, nearing release on Lamb Unlimited. Contorted with untamed riffage and coprophagous lyrical tyranny, the unsmooth sounds of “Ever Mind” are a thunderously adequate introduction to this mutant, predatory trio and the latest mangled and raucous tonal destruction in the ongoing lineage of these undomesticated vertebrata.

“Like a shovelful of sludge to the skull, the record reeks of blood, mud, and the rancid pheromones of AmRep veterans like Cows and Killdozer,” states the Onion’s A.V. Club write-up coinciding with the track premiere. “There’s also a blunt, metallic thrust to the disc, best heard on ‘Ever Mind,’ one of Untoward’s least amiable onslaughts of prickly noise. Go ahead, cuddle it.”

Hear for yourself as “Ever Mind” grabs you by the throat and twirls you round and round, round and round, round and round… DO IT HERE.

The previously uncaged “Pack Up Your Shit” from Untoward is shredding via Invisible Oranges HERE.

Widespread live infestation in support of Untoward begins immediately, including the upcoming three-day, seven-show, twenty-five-band D.I.Y. “anti-fest” dubbed Festicide, running from August 15th through 17th in Portland, Oregon, booked by RABBITS and their resurrected outsider label, Eolian Empire. Amidst other live actions being sorted, the band has also announced the first installment of dates for their upcoming return to Europe this October. With nine dates confirmed and more to be announced in the coming days, the entire run will see the band alongside Norway’s eclectic Årabrot, whom RABBITS co-released their split 7” EP with last year.

Preorders for Untoward — digital download, as well as 12” 150-gram black wax cut at 45 RPM guaranteed to rip your face off — are accessible HERE.

RABBITS Live:
8/16/2014 East End – Portland, OR @ Festicide w/ Honduran, Diesto, Towers [free matinee]
8/23/2014 The Victory Lounge – Seattle, WA w/ Prizehog
European tour w/ Årabrot:
10/10/2014 Blitz – Oslo, Norway
10/13/2014 Magasin 4 – Brussels, Belgium
10/15/2014 Star & Garter – Manchester, UK
10/16/2014 13th Note – Glasgow, UK
10/17/2014 The Windmill – London, UK
10/18/2014 Greed Door Store – Brighton, UK
10/19/2014 The Pits – Kortrijk, Belgium
10/20/2014 TBA – Liege, Belgium
10/21/2014 Terminus – Rennes, France

Untoward will be released on August 12th via Lamb Unlimited, the label spawned of Chris Spencer of Unsane and Alan Schneider of No More Records, the album exhaustingly tracked live to tape at Type Foundry, Portland in one day and mixed in two. The engineering duties on Untoward were tag-teamed by Jeremy Romagna (Trees, Tecumseh, Wives) and Fester (Nux Vomica, Usnea, Stoneburner), both of whom have recorded the majority of the band’s previous material, the tracks mastered by Ryan Foster at Foster Mastering, and the cover artwork hand-sewn by Anne Mersereau. Through RABBITS’s already unwelcoming tsunami of blaring amplification and sarcastic, parasitic methodology, the outsider trio unloads nearly a half-hour of their most centered but dynamic aggravation yet on Untoward.

BLACK COBRA Confirms Month-Long Summer/Fall US Tour With Support From Lo Pan

Friday, July 25th, 2014

BLACK COBRA today announces a more than month-long US Tour, set to begin in late August and running into the beginning of October.

With thirty-two cities confirmed to endure the BLACK COBRA live treatment at press time, the actions begin in Phoenix, Arizona on August 28th, then spiraling though the Southeast, up the East Coast and back across the country in a downward slash on their way back to their Bay Area homelands. BIG BLACK CLOUD To Issue Lessons in Fuck You 2 EP Via Eolian Empire

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Portland’s furious sci-fi punks, BIG BLACK CLOUD, are back from the lab with their latest dirty bomb, the cassette EP Lessons In Fuck You 2. Tripling down on their intoxicating rarefied mix of punk, noise, psych, surf, and rock, the agita trio takes a dark trip that drives and swerves like a B-movie soundtrack through threat-level guitar attacks, groovy alien eviscerations, and goddamn-us-all-to-hell preaching.

BIG BLACK CLOUD is from Portland, Oregon, and comprises guitarist/vocalist Nick Capello, bassist/vocalist Soo Koelbli, and drummer Travis Wainwright. Formed in 2005, BIG BLACK CLOUD has released two 7-inches, a 10-inch, two 12-inch LPs (Dark Age and Black Friday), and the Shitty Vibrations cassette. BIG BLACK CLOUD channels inspiration from sources as disparate as Brainbombs and the Beatles, Dolphy and Mingus, and Italian horror and creature features into unhinged rock ‘n’ roll that hits the high marks and innovation of noise-punk greats like Pere Ubu, Circus Lupus, Dead Kennedys, Cows, and Alice Donut.

Lessons In Fuck You 2 was borne of demo sessions recorded and mixed by Andrew Grosse of Caravan Recording (Drunk Dad, Tyrants, Tiny Knives) for the next BIG BLACK CLOUD LP, the record capturing the band in its own anxiety-fueled element, a rollercoaster ride through a collapsing amusement park of overdriven shout-alongs and untethered instrumentals. The recordings, done on location with a mobile unit in the underground lair of the The Fancy Fox, gave the ever-prolific trio a chance to work through a host of new and old ideas. Whether due to the (dis)comfort of their own space, nothing-to-lose abandon, or present states-of-mind, Lessons In Fuck You 2 finds the band in top form: frantic, pissed-off, and sinister as they further explore their own dark territory with off-balance grooves, instrumental street-race sex jams, and wild freakouts, jagged guitar and cracking drums glued together with rubbery bass overlain with can-you-hear-me-now yells. Fuck you too, thank you very much. Please keep your head and hands inside the ride.

Lessons in Fuck You 2 Track Listing:
1. Black Sunday
2. Reptile Brain 2
3. Satellites
4. Disappointment
5. Monoliths
6. Exotic
7. Hate in Outer Space
8. Brainbeater
9. Saturn
10. Open Eye / Yadnus Kcalb

Lessons In Fuck You 2 will see parole on August 5th, a cooperative release between Portland’s heavy-vibing DIY label Eolian Empire and the band’s own Stankhouse Records. Preorders for the cassette are available HERE and the digital version HERE.

Just days ahead of when the Lessons In Fuck You 2 tutorial is officially on the streets bashing in ears, BIG BLACK CLOUD’s record release show will take place hometown scum-style on August 2nd with Eolian partners-in-slime, Towers. The gig will be immediately followed by an eight-city run throughout California, from August 7th through the 15th.

BIG BLACK CLOUD Live:
8/02/2014 High Water Mark – Portland, OR – Record Release show w/ Towers
8/07/2014 3rd Space – Davis, CA
8/08/2014 Telegraph Beach – Oakland, CA
8/09/2014 Industrial Estate – Pasadena, CA
8/10/2014 Tower Bar – San Diego, CA
8/11/2014 Pehrspace – Los Angeles, CA
8/12/2014 The Continental Room – Fullerton, CA
8/13/2014 The Knockout – San Francisco, CA
8/15/2014 The Mall – Stockton, CA

Much praise was heaped upon BIG BLACK CLOUD’s debut LP Dark Age, “an absolutely thrilling listen” (Built On A Weak Spot), “a fantastically frenetic, dark, psychedelic garage rock record” (Permanent Records), “a huge, swirling mess of garage, punk, noise, psych, howls, and yelps” (Maximum Rocknroll) and their follow-up full-length Black Friday, an “atonal salute to noise-addled eccentricity” (No Ripcord), “tense, taut, seething, screaming fury” (Spin), “messy, hellish, and just plain nasty” (Symbiotic Reviews), “like an acid/meth hybrid trip through a poisonous snake pit in a Midwest graveyard” (SLUG).

AMERICAN HERITAGE To Issue Sixth Album Via Solar Flare Records This Autumn

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Clermont-Ferrand, France-based Solar Flare Records proudly announces the signing of Chicago-based quartet, AMERICAN HERITAGE, for the release of the band’s recently completed sixth full-length album.

Since 1996, AMERICAN HERITAGE has relentlessly dispatched their ripping concoction of technical, mangled metal/hardcore backed with their cynical, lowbrow music and human relations, both on record and on the stage. Their self-titled 1998 debut EP released on The Rosewood Union was chased by the full-length, Why Everyone Gets Cancer, released in 1999 on the same label, and their Through The Age Of Quarrel And Into The Era Of Putting Up With It album released in 2001 by Troubleman Unlimited, and then the Bipolar album through Escape Artist in 2004. Two subsequent albums on Translation Loss followed — 2006’s Millenarian and 2011’s Sedentary, the latter released in Europe via Solar Flare Records — among EPs on Class-B Records, Delboy Records and more including split 7″ releases with Thee Plague Of Gentlemen, Mastodon and others. Their most recent Sedentary album, recorded while the lineup was void of a full-time bassist, included guest contributions on each track, involving their partners in crime, collectively hailing from Sulaco, Murder Construct, Exhumed, D.I.S., Fight Amp, Nachtmystium, Buried At Sea, Mastodon, Primate, Lioness, Sweet Cobra, Dark Fog, Plague Bringer, Black Cobra, The Swan King, Beak, Surachai and others. On the road, AMERICAN HERITAGE has toured and performed alongside the likes of Baroness, Black Cobra, Floor, Mastodon, Pelican, Burnt By The Sun, Misery Index, Coliseum, Dysrhythmia, Saviours, Origin and countless others.

Following the departure of original guitarist Andrei Cabanban back in 2002, through a continually revolving array of bassists, AMERICAN HERITAGE has been steadily comprised of drummer Mike Duffy, vocalist/guitarist Adam Norden and guitarist Scott Shellhamer, and for the past several years, completed by bassist Erik Bocek. This lineup raided SOMA Studios in March of this year with producer Sanford Parker, with additional recording by Che Arthur and Mike Lust, to record their sixth full-length, Prolapse. Once the caustic madness of the bruising album was recorded, Parker mixed the final product, the thirty-three minute album displaying some of the band’s most diverse material to date. After the recording of Prolapse, core member Adam Norden left the band, and after eighteen years of abuse and racket, this move makes it foreseeable that this will be the final album from AMERICAN HERITAGE.

Prolapse will be let out of the cage this November, on digital, CD and vinyl formats via Solar Flare Records, home to Pigs, Sofy Major, The Great Sabatini, Pord, Stuntman and other high-quality acts from the noisier end of the underground rock/metal community. A confirmed street date and additional release details will be announced in the coming weeks.

LO-PAN: Ohio Riff Rock Peddlers To Release New Full-Length Via Small Stone This Fall; Artwork + Track Listing Unveiled

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Long-running Ohio riff rock peddlers, LO-PAN, are pleased to unveil the details of their long awaited new full-length fittingly titled, Colossus.

Named for the Colossus of Rhodes — a ninety-six-foot statue of the Greek titan-god of the sun, Helios, constructed in 280 BC to mark a failed siege and the indomitable nature of the Greek city of Rhodes itself — LO-PAN’s fourth opus serves as their most personal manifestation to date and a true testament to their evolution both as a band and individually.

In the three years since of the release of third long-player, Salvador, the Columbus four-piece have logged countless miles, crossing the country multiple times over on headlining tours and supporting the likes of Torche, High on Fire, KENmode, Whores, Fu Manchu and Weedeater. They’ve become one of the most ferocious live acts in American heavy rock, and Colossus stands tall to reap the rewards of their experience.

For the first time in their near decade-long existence, LO-PAN knew exactly what they wanted when they hit the studio. They’d road-tested songs like “Eastern Seas” and the title track for over a year, and partnering with producer/engineer Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Rosetta, East Of The Wall et al)  at his Translator Audio studio in Brooklyn just days after headlining Small Stone showcases in that city and Boston last March, they belted out songs that reveal just how much they’ve moved beyond their influences and arrived at their own sound – a style built on aggression without caricature, fuzz without cliché, melody without redundancy and their meanest groove to date.

Complete with cover art courtesy of Jason Alexander Byers (ex-Disengage, Black Black Black), Colossus, like its namesake, was built in defiance of gods and men, and while LO-PAN’s loudest statement has always been made on stage, the material they craft and the power with which they execute it on this album is bound to stand for years to come.

1. Regulus

3. Black Top Revelation
4. Marathon Man

Colossus will be released via Small Stone October 7th, 2014. Further details including track teasers and preorder links to be announced in the coming weeks.

LO-PAN could easily stand as one of the most important bands of their generation in the genre.” — The Obelisk

“With enough stoner rock goodness to destroy bridges and skyscrapers alike, LO-PAN show that they are one of several absolutely essential rock outfits working today and a major force to be reckoned with.” – Sputnik Music

SEPULTURA – Brazilian Metal Icons To Release Sepultura And Les Tambours du Bronx: Metal Veins – Alive At Rock In Rio

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

In celebration of an astounding thirty-year career, SEPULTURA — who stands among Brazil’s most successful bands ever —  will unleash a new live offering entitled Sepultura And Les Tambours du Bronx: Metal Veins – Alive At Rock In Rio.

In a spectacular performance that finds SEPULTURA accompanied throughout by the French industrial percussion group Les Tambours du Bronx, notorious for beating 225-liter barrels with beech wood bats or even axe handles, the show was recorded from the band’s main stage appearance at the legendary Rock In Rio gala in 2013. Featuring SEPULTURA’s most revered tunes including “Refuse/Resist,” “Territory” and “Roots Bloody Roots,” which sees the audience chanting the entire cut from beginning to end, the sheer volume of sound, percussive enormity and powerful presentation sets this release apart from any previous SEPULTURA concert offering to date.

With a one-hour run time divided into thirteen cuts, the album also features a cover of Prodigy’s “Firestarter,” the fan-chanted “Sepulnation” hymn, and music from the band’s Kairos full-length. Metal Veins – Alive At Rock In Rio will come available on CD, DVD and for the first time in the band’s history, Blu-Ray via a partnership with Rock In Rio, MZA Music and Eagle Rock Entertainment. In addition, the DVD includes an exclusive documentary of behind-the-scenes preparation with interviews, rehearsal and sound-check footage and clips of the band just seconds before they hit the stage.
