GHOUL: Hooded Hooligans Issue Tour Update; Video Posted

Friday, September 19th, 2014

America’s favorite Creepsylvanians, GHOUL, have been terrorizing stages across the US with Skeletonwitch and Black Anvil. Digestor and Baron Samedi recently stopped for a bite to eat in a New Orleans cemetery and issued the following video update:

You can also witness some recent live carnage from the band , mosh tips from Cremator and more hooded hilarity below.

The masked miscreants in GHOUL will continue their pillage US graveyards as they march through Austin, Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the words of Digestor: “Live for metal, DIE FOR GHOUL!”

GHOUL w/ Skeletonwitch, Black Anvil [remaining dates]:
9/20/2014 Red 7 – Austin, TX
9/22/2014 Club Red – Phoenix, AZ
9/23/2014 Roxy Theatre – Los Angeles, CA
9/24/2014 DNA Lounge – San Francisco, CA

GHOUL recently unleashed We Came For The Dead!!! on waxy awesomeness. Initially released in 2002, We Came For The Dead!!! was an instant cult classic in the most putrid depths of the metal underworld, delivering a slick, punk-infused style of American goregrind from an unidentified tomb in the depths of Creepsylvania, where they’ve since waged war on mortals from with full anonymity. GHOUL now offers up We Came For The Dead!!! on vinyl which includes a GHOULish rendition of Megadeth’s “Skull Beneath The Skin.” We Came For The Dead!!! is out now on Tankcrimes and available in three gruesome color variants: a “More Blood” red edition in a run of 666, the ultra-limited “Torch” pressing in a tri-color yellow/orange/bone scheme, and the Die Hard edition, which bears a “Blood Spill” red inside clear vinyl, foil stamped jacket, flexi postcard w/ bonus track “We Are Creepsylvanians” by Igvar Shmeltzy and the Turnips. Get in on the action HERE. And for the CD and digital format junkies, the album comes paired up with GHOUL’s ghastly follow-up to We Came For The Dead!!!, Maniaxe, as a nifty two-for-one album deal available now. Who says GHOUL doesn’t like bargains. Order the CD HERE (or in stores worldwide) or the digital version HERE.

IDES OF GEMINI Unleashes Old World New Wave; New Hymn Now Playing At Pitchfork

Friday, September 19th, 2014

Following the release of their long anticipated Old World New Wave full-length earlier this week via Neurot Recordings, West Coast sound weavers, IDES OF GEMINI, are pleased to unleash “May 22, 1453″ today via Pitchfork.

Elaborates singer/bassist Sera Timms of the hymn, “We’ve had a history as a band of gifts and opportunities being given to us in alignment with the lunar phases, so it seemed fitting to give something back. This song and really the whole album is that something. The song was inspired by the prophetic May 22nd lunar eclipse preceding the fall of Constantinople. If you can imagine that empire as your mind and the black moon as your mother, then you will know the meaning of the Old World New Wave.”

Adds Pitchfork: “The band’s always flirted with the occult in both aesthetic and tone, eschewing the heavy-handed witchicisms preferred by some in favor of cultivating a lighter, more holistic aura. The ritualistic feel on ‘May 22, 1453’ stems both from Timms’ stentorian delivery and the lyrics themselves, which circle around the lunar eclipse that some say predicted the fall of Constantinople. It’s a neat tie-in to the band’s debut, and only one of the album’s many arcane historical footnotes. The rumbling ‘Fememorde’ alludes to medieval vigilantes and political murder, while Timms’ dreamy croon on ‘Seer Of Circassia’ spills dreams of the ancient crossroads between Europe and the Far East. IDES OF GEMINI aren’t the kind of band that would typically sing about goats or gore, but the complex, often mystical lyrics are handled with care, underscoring the band’s otherwordly ambitions.”

Feel the swell of “May 22, 1453,” now playing at Pitchfork at THIS LOCATION.

And if you missed it, check out “Fememorde,” at Cvlt Nation at THIS LOCATION, “The Adversary,” still streaming at Revolver Magazine at THIS LOCATION as well as “The Chalice & The Blade,” at Noisey HERE.

IDES OF GEMINI is Timms, also of West Coast dark-psych conjurors Black Mare, alongside guitarist Jason Bennett and drummer Kelly Johnston-Gibson. Old World New Wave, the follow-up to the band’s critically-adored Constantinople debut, was recorded at Valley Recording in Burbank, California, engineered and mixed by Chris Rakestraw (Danzig), mastered by Grammy award winning producer Matt Hyde (Slayer) and boasts the striking hand-drawn cover art of Johnston-Gibson.

The band will take to the stage this Fall on a pair of live performances, the first serving as the trio’s official record release gala in Los Angeles today, the second playing Intronaut’s tenth anniversary show. Additional IDES ceremonies will to be announced in the coming weeks.

[IDES OF GEMINI are] about to put out a new album called Old World New Wave and there’s enough droney doom on it to make you feel like you’re stuck in David Lynch’s dreams.” – Noisey

LAGO: Debut Album From Arizona Death Quartet Out Now; Via Battleground Records Record Show This Weekend

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

This week, seekers of no-nonsense death metal can purchase the impressive Tyranny, the new debut full-length from Phoenix, Arizona’s LAGO, out now on Battleground Records.

Produced by Ryan Butler at Arcane Digital Recording (Exhumed, Phobia, Landmine Marathon) and mastered by Dave Shirk at Sonorous Mastering (Incantation, Exhumed, Today is the Day), LAGO reigns down forty minutes of primal, breakneck death metal with an ominous, blackened atmosphere, and includes a guest appearance from Jonny Davy of Job For A Cowboy. Issued Invisible Oranges, “the Phoenix quartet plays competent and well-executed death metal… Besides a blackened foray here and a chamber music segue there, they blast along like streamlined icons, strengthened by a proven Floridian flow.” MetalSucks called in an equally positive write-up: “LAGO know when to beat you over the head with sheer brutality, they know when to slow things down for gargantuan effect, and they know how write a real, artful guitar solo. In short, they’re the perfect death metal band.” Headbang Or GTFO gave the record a 5/5, issuing, “Tyranny is a modern day death metal masterpiece, that features some of the best things to happen to the genre but keeping it simple and relatively grim. And No Clean Singing called Tyranny, “…top-shelf death metal, like some hellish blackened offspring of early Morbid Angel and Disma, fully armed with an arsenal of impressive technical chops and infectious hooks…Tyranny has vaulted onto our list of highly anticipated 2014 albums.”

Tyranny is out now on digipak CD available HERE, and available on all major digital platforms including Bandcamp HERE. Sweden’s Blood Harvest Records will release the vinyl version shortly.

LAGO’s official release show for the album will incinerate Tempe this Saturday, September 20th, the show also including Sorrower, Meathook, Unholy Monarch, Cave Dweller and Deadspawn. Stand by for new announcements on live actions as LAGO continues to march onward in support of their new works.

BAPTISTS Unload New Track From Bloodmines Through Metal Injection; Tour With Obliterations And Torch Runner Nears

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

Take a step back from your complacent life and catch an awakening smack in the mouth with the new track, “Calling,” courtesy of Vancouver’s unstoppable BAPTISTS.

Culled from their incoming sophomore LP, Bloodmines, which was recorded and mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City Studios, the tenth track from the album rides with a slightly slower pace than the record as a whole, jamming with a more noise rock whiplash, yet never letting their furiousness fall to the side for a moment. Metal Injection is now streaming “Calling” alongside the lyrics and some insight on the track from BAPTISTS’ standpoint and more.

Embark on daily journeys
To seats that stay in place
Repress innate feelings
To walk the fuck away

Boss says it’s our calling
Boss says

Stream “Calling” at Metal Injection right now at THIS LOCATION.

Revolver Magazine recently premiered the track “Harm Induction” playing HERE.

With Bloodmines now just under a month from its October 14th North American street date via Southern Lord, the band will take to the North American West Coast days before the album’s release. Following several headlining shows, BAPTISTS will take place in the Southern Lord showcase in Los Angeles, California  on October 15th, joining labelmates Excel, Goatsnake, Xibalba, Obliterations and Torch Runner. From there, Obliterations, Torch Runner and BAPTISTS will all tour as a package through the end of the month, with all three acts touring on their new albums, all due via Southern Lord in October. Another tour highlight includes a stop at Southwest Terror Fest III: The Western Front, set to take place October 16th-19th in Tucson, Arizona, where BAPTISTS are set to perform on the main stage the final evening of the gathering with SUNN O))), Obliterations and Sex Prisoner.

Stand by for further BAPTISTS tour actions and further audio from Bloodmines to be released in the coming weeks.

Like its predecessor, BAPTISTS’ acclaimed Bushcraft debut LP, Bloodmines is an exhilarating album pouring with genuine, raw emotion and frenzied punk fury. Shards of feedback make way for rapid riffs and savage vocals, with explosive drumming surging life into every second of each movement. On tracks like “Vistas”, “Calling” and the title track, “Bloodmines,” the pace changes, revealing powerful, melodic and jagged noise rock songs, much like influential San Diego post-hardcore band Drive Like Jehu, which go beyond the two minute mark. Discordant guitar melodies and abrasive vocal passages are elongated, still volatile but perhaps allowing for further contemplation of the band’s underlying message.

TRAGODIA: Italian Progressive Metal Quintet Releases New Video From Mythmaker Through Revolver Magazine

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

Brescia, Italy-based progressive metal outfit, TRAGODIA, has just released an official video from their third LP Mythmaker, which was released last November via Kolony Records.

Envisioned and constructed for Mythmaker’s powerful opening anthem “A Cry Among The Stars,” the new video was filmed in two locations in Italy, directed by Michele Sirigu of G-Studio Entertainment and assisted by Riccardo Frigoni. Featuring the TRAGODIA quintet performing their song at the base of a mammoth marble quarry with close-up and extremely high viewpoints of the members, the second location features talented dancer Veronica Calini performing in an abandoned warehouse, set in a completely different manner.

Revolver Magazine is now hosting the “A Cry Among The Stars” at THIS LOCATION.

Mythmaker is available for streaming and purchase at Kolony Records’ Bandcamp HERE, and an in-studio documentary on Mythmaker and lyric video for “A Temple In Time” are playing HERE.

Since the release of Mythmaker, TRAGODIA has been performing live in Europe, including several live shows opening for bands such as Testament, Van Canto, White Skull and more. Mythmaker is a glorious, challenging effort from the talented quintet, showcasing some of their most ambitious musicianship and beautiful solos, as well as some of their most torrid, crunching riffs yet, with nearly fifty minutes of powerful music packed into the album’s ten tracks. Building on classic metal twin guitars attack and relentlessly pounding rhythmic structures, as well on a vocally inspired performance and haunting almost space rock-driven melodies, Mythmaker was recorded at Elfo Studio in Piacenza with producer Daniele Mandelli (Forgotten Tomb), and mastered at Sterling Sound in New York City by UE Nastasi (Lamb Of God, Gojira, Paradise Lost).

Additional TRAGODIA news will be released in the coming months.

“…TRAGODIA add their own brand of catchiness and groove to make it their own. After all, the whole point of a progressive band is to be progressive and push genre boundaries… To sum up this work of metal mastery, TRAGODIA are simply one of the reasons Progressive and Power Metal are my two favorite genres of Metal, and do their home country of Italy proud… 10/10″ – Metal Temple

“If you enjoy melodic Metal that retains a sense of heaviness, includes a Thrash ethic, and has a touch of Progressive, you would do well to check out Mythmaker. 8/10” – We Love Metal

“…this album signals a significant change from 2012’s Theomachy. The gothic stuff goes out the window and prog metal steps in to help the band find the gold. Power metal and prog with just a touch of Italianate groove dominate the album… Mythmaker has plenty to offer the faithful while welcoming new converts to the Euro-metal mainstream.” – About.com

TODAY IS THE DAY: First Single From Animal Mother Released Via Metal Injection Video Premiere; Tour With Lord Mantis Announced

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

The first single from TODAY IS THE DAY’s tenth LP, Animal Mother, has been released via Metal Injection through a disturbing new video for the ninth track, “Masada,” as the band begins to divulge the newest developments in their massive upcoming tour schedule.

Produced by visual architect David Hall of Handshake Inc., the disturbing accompaniment for “Masada” delivers the track in a vibrant, high-contrast collage of footage, combining imagery born of nature’s itinerary and humanity’s inherently sadistic and perverse ways. Cult leaders summon more flies to the fire while children learn to handle automatic weapons. Brains decay and maggots feast upon the flesh of mammals, while a twisted, obfuscated plot unfolds amidst several unnamed humans in this disgustingly satisfying slab of cinematic madness. Undeniable lust, seething anger, inward loathing and outward aggression all flow in an occult blend of Americana that is as unique as the song. In other words, it’s “TODAY IS THE DAY as fuck.”

Issued director David Hall of the video: “I’m always honored when Steve Austin asks me to create a video for TODAY IS THE DAY. Early on we decided that ‘Masada’ should be the track people hear first from the new album because it really represents the album in terms of rock and diversity and TITD insanity. Steve wanted a video that would infect minds and reflect the madness of the music. I ate some meatloaf and went on a vision quest and was shown a couple in a desert being corrupted by their dysfunction and desire to control one another. So this is what I made.”

Strap in and send your day into a downward spiral with TODAY IS THE DAY’s “Masada” video via Metal Injection RIGHT HERE.

A trailer for Animal Mother, also created by Hall, is also playing at THIS LOCATION.

Southern Lord will release Animal Mother on LP, CD and digital download in North America on October 14th, as the band’s first venture for the label. With Animal Mother still lurking in the shadows, the band prepares for an extensive bout of widespread live actions in support of the album. From October 7th through the 26th, TODAY IS THE DAY will shred through the US on a headlining tour with direct support from Chicago deviants, Lord Mantis. This is the first phase of touring which will expand in the coming days, taking the band out on several more excursions through the rest of the year and well into 2015. Stand by for more major developments about to be issued in the coming days.

TODAY IS THE DAY w/ Lord Mantis:
10/07/2014 Geno’s – Portland, ME
10/08/2014 Sonny’s – Dover, NH
10/09/2014 Spotlight Tavern – Beverly, MA
10/10/2014 Dusk – Providence, RI

10/12/2014 The Acheron – Brooklyn, NY
10/13/2014 Kung-Fu Necktie – Philadelphia, PA
10/14/2014 Church – Boston, MA
10/15/2014 The Depot – York, PA
10/16/2014 Cafe 611 – Frederick, MD
10/17/2014 TBA – Long Island, NY
10/18/2014 Jabber Jaws – Allentown, PA

10/25/2014 Hangar 21 – Shreveport, LA
10/26/2014 Riot Room – Kansas City, MO
10/26/2014 Hi Tone – Memphis, TN

As always, the dejected and vengeful hymns TODAY IS THE DAY delivers with their latest opus are among the most scathing passages of audio one will experience, as Animal Mother unloads just short of a solid hour of pure anguish. The band’s lineup features the rhythm section of bassist Sean Conkling (Regression, Burn Your Halo, Sprawl) and drummer Jeff Lohrber (Enabler, ex-Harlots), fronted by cult leader, founding guitarist/vocalist Steve Austin. Through fifteen diversified attacks, Animal Mother’s wrath recalls elements of several seminal TITD albums, merging the dementia of Temple Of The Morning Star with the blazing delivery of In The Eyes Of God, yet several acoustic and more melodic angles elevate the LP’s material to entirely different dimensions. The Animal Mother recording sessions took place at the notorious architect’s own Austin Enterprises in the deeply wooded Maine wilderness this brutal past Winter, the material fully produced and mastered by Austin, and shrouded in original artwork by Samantha Muljat.

BLEACH EVERYTHING / VORS Split 7-Inch Due In October Via Magic Bullet Records Richmond Punk Destroyers & Los Angeles Synth Creep Unite

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

Magic Bullet Records has locked a killer, two-band split 7” for October release, marking the debuts of two fairly new names to the scene — Richmond, Virginia’s BLEACH EVERYTHING and Los Angeles, California’s VORS — both of which include some very not new names to the scene. Confused? Allow us to delve…

BLEACH EVERYTHING kick off the festivities with “The Moaner,” a demented little number about a violent man that lives in your attic undetected. Musically, the pace is as frantic and urgent as the final sands in the proverbial hourglass. Drums are crushed, buzzsaw guitars cut deeply across the speakers, and overdriven bass pushes along the possessed and just flat-out eerie vocals in a pre-meditated murderous game of musical chairs. Featuring current members of Iron Reagan, Suppression, and former members of Jesuit and Corn On Macabre, you know full-well it’s going to be a completely twisted take on music as most people conventionally know it.

Like all great bi-polar incidents and episodes, VORS complements the violent carnage of BLEACH EVERYTHING via a deliberate, dead-behind-the-eyes ditty appropriately titled “Mood Swinger.” Synth-heavy and glacially paced, the track sounds like it was written from the fire escape outside of the kitchen window you’re obliviously walking around behind (towel optional). Drenched in the gritty low-budget outsider sleaze that defined many of the great VHS hits of the ‘70s and ‘80s, this could have easily been the soundtrack to “Maniac,” “Deranged,” “Possessed” and the like. It’s cold, it’s rainy, and it’s highly likely that VORS (aka J Bennett from Ides Of Gemini) is talking and laughing to himself while cutting the phone lines in your neighborhood.

The whole bloody affair is packaged in a disturbingly meticulous and obsessive wrap from the hands and the mind of former Kink.com set-dresser STK MTN. This is the kind of record the brown paper bag was invented for.

Magic Bullet Records will let this auditory assault out of the bag on digital download and both black and white 7” vinyl pressings worldwide on October 14th.

Additional news on both acts will be stalking you shortly.

ANAAL NATHRAKH: UK Extreme Metal Duo Wages War With “Monstrum In Animo,” Now Playing At Decibel

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

Long running UK extreme metal duo/recent Metal Blade signees, ANAAL NATHRAKH, are pleased to soil your day with the repugnant sounds of “Monstrum In Animo,” now playing at Decibel Magazine.

The ferocious new hymn comes by way of the band’s soon-to-be detonated Desideratum full-length. Produced by guitarist/bassist/programmer Mick Kenney, with vocals recorded at Necrodeath Studios in Birmingham, and music tracked and mixed at The Black Flamingo in Orange County, California, Desideratum flaunts eleven fantastically mischievous odes of agony and despair. Declares Decibel Magazine, “the ridiculously consistent Birmingham black metallers are simply one of the most utterly fearsome and inventive outfits currently operating in the modern extreme metal scene. Elite level mind-fuckers. Aural devastators…”

Feel the scorch of third movement, “Monstrum In Animo,” now playing at Decibel at THIS LOCATION.

Named, “one of the best bands out there when it comes to evoking horror and terror… a master class in extreme metal,” by MetalSucks, “a thrill ride of horrors,” by Pitchfork and the, “soundtrack to our demise,” by PopMatters, ANAAL NATHRAKH — Kenney alongside vocalist David Hunt AKA V.I.T.R.I.O.L. — exists for one purpose: to replicate the sounds of true evil. Forged in fury in 1999, the pair has gained a reputation for expressing precisely that. With both screaming banshee and traditional vocals set against an impenetrable wall of controlled chaos, what ANAAL NATHRAKH manifests is plainly terrifying. Their winding resume includes not only the release of seven critically lauded long-players and an EP but collaborations with such legendary talents as Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Shane Embury and Danny Herrera (Napalm Death), Nick Barker (Testament, Dimmu Borgir), Joe Horvath (Circle Of Dead Children), Sethlans Teitan (Watain) and more. Combined with rankings among “best album of the year” polls and “album of the month” in the press and cover appearances on revered magazines such as Terrorizer, ANAAL NATHRAKH’s position as one of the leading lights in extreme metal is irrefutable. Hallmarked by pulverizing musical dexterity, ingenuity and breadth, married with mercurial, intensely misanthropic and sharp intelligence, ANAAL NATHRAKH’s sound is imbued with a palpable sense of menace that is virtually unmatched in the metal world.

Desideratum will send the Earth crashing into the Sun on October 28th, 2014. In the interim, brave souls can still sample first single, “Idol,” now streaming at metalblade.com/anaalathrakh where you’ll also find a host of killer preorder packages. Additionally, fans who preorder the record via iTunes will receive a download of “Idol” instantly.

Stay tuned for further ANAAL NATHRAKH developments in the coming weeks.
