IDES OF GEMINI: Otherworldly Conjurors Unleash Old World New Wave Trailer

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

As Old World New Wave, the long-awaited new full-length from Los Angeles’ otherworldly doom weavers, IDES OF GEMINI, draws near, today the band offers up a haunting new trailer to whet the appetites of fans hungry for their forthcoming platter of ethereal nightmares.

Directed and produced by singer/bassist Sera Timms and shot by Timms with drummer Kelly Johnston-Gibson, the stunning, near-five-minute clip is at once despondent and beautiful, capturing both sonically and visually the true essence of the album with chest-caving urgency.

Get lost in the lurid sounds of Old World New Wave below.

IDES OF GEMINI features Timms (also of Los Angeles dark-psych alchemists Black Mare), Johnston-Gibson and guitarist Jason Bennett. Listed among Alternative Press’ Most Anticipated Albums Of The Rest Of 2014 as well as The Obelisk’s Records Not To Miss Before The New Year Hits, the follow-up to the band’s 2012 Constantinople debut, Old World New Wave was recorded at Valley Recording in Burbank, California, engineered and mixed by Chris Rakestraw (Danzig), mastered by Grammy award winning producer Matt Hyde (Slayer) and boasts the striking hand-drawn cover art of Johnston-Gibson.

Old World New Wave will be released on CD and digitally via Neurot Recordings and on vinyl via SIGE Records on September 16th, 2014.

“…darkly beautiful…” – Pitchfork

“Processional doom, [with] ethereal female harmonies and high-strung riffs [that] incite head-bowing, not – banging.” – Spin

“…a proverbial treasure chest in terms of atmosphere, ideas and contrasting musical textures…original and breathtaking.” – About.Com

COWARDS: French Sludge/Doom Act Confirms Repress Of Debut Album; Band To Record New LP

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014

Fear not what their name implies, as this Paris-based quintet is anything but weak or inhibited in their delivery. Thundering with massive, low-end amplification and a downcast, scathing vocal delivery, COWARDS’ noxious brew of sludge/doom is not from, or for, the weak of heart.

Formed by current and ex-members of Sickbag, Death Mercedes, Hangman’s Chair, Eibon and Hellbats, COWARDS has already built a reputable arsenal of destructive audio since forming in 2011, but will take this year by the throat in several ways, with a reissue of their debut album confirmed for official reissue in North America, and the plans for their next full-length studio endeavor confirmed.

Gathering Parisians with an already strong pedigree in dark and heavy music, COWARDS regurgitates gutter hardcore, unhealthy sludge/doom and nauseous black metal on their 2012-released debut LP, Shooting Blanks & Pills. Recorded only six months after the band was formed, this monstrosity surges with a desperate urban attitude, bridging the knife-in-the-heart crudeness of Eyehategod, Deadguy or Kickback and the majestic darkness of bands like Deathspell Omega or Thou. With a sound carrying the smell of piss-soaked back-alleys and the blood you’ll taste for a mistaken sidelong glance, producer Francis Caste perfectly captured the corrosion and angst of these thirty-eight minutes, recreating this forced apnea in a bile tank with a no-frills approach. Originally released on France’s Throatruiner Records, Shooting Blanks & Pills is long sold out, yet will see a rebirth on CD and transparent 12” LP via Canadian label Secret Handshake Recordings on September 1st, 2014. Additional pressing and release details will follow in the coming days.

In the meantime, the Shooting Blanks & Pills album and Hoarder EP are available for download via Bandcamp HERE.

Shooting Blanks & Pills Track Listing:
1. Hoarse From The Get Go
2. Last Card
3. Scarce
4. Vices & Hate
5. Arrogant, Unseen
6. Grand Failure

COWARDS has also sanctioned studio time this October to harness the demoralizing anthems that will be their sophomore full-length, the follow-up to 2013’s mangling Hoarder EP. The band will return to Sainte-Marthe Studio once again with Francis Caste at the engineering helm for the as-yet-unnamed works, which will be completed for early 2015 release.

Having toured across Europe and with countless regional performances under their belts, COWARDS will continue to tour throughout the coming months surrounding their recording sessions, supporting their previous releases, while they begin integrating their new works into their live delivery. You’ve been warned.

COWARDS Live:
8/22/2014 La Bergerie – Montbrun, France w/ Mur
11/07/2014 La Instants Chavirés – Montreuil, France
11/08/2014 La Scène Michelet – Nantes, France

CRUCIFIED: Posthumous Recordings From Bay Area Act Confirmed For Release Via Get This Right Records

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014

Get This Right Records is honored to announce the upcoming release of the final recordings from defunct hardcore/thrash outfit, CRUCIFIED, late this Summer.

CRUCIFIED was a short-lived outfit from the Bay Area. Their volatile, energetic delivery of classic NYHC foundation jacked-up with pummeling metallic thrash influence and infectious pick-up parts saw the band make an instant impact on the hardcore scene. In 2008 they recorded their first four-song demo which was later released as a split with California’s No Truce on Escapist Records. After playing all over the West Coast and releasing another split with Steel Nation in 2009 on Double Or Nothing Records, their 2010-released Coldest Winter LP was released on the same label, upon which the band toured the United States and parts of Canada that Summer.

In May of 2011, CRUCIFIED entered the studio for one last session, where they recorded four new tracks, set to see release as the Dead Of Sleep EP,  yet just after completing the process, the band decided to call it a day. Now, three years after their demise, these final four anthems will be available for the first time. Recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden Studios in Palo Alto, California, this concise and ferocious EP perfectly displays CRUCIFIED’s slick and lethal style to both previous fans and new, and is a testament of their brief but relevant lifespan as a band. Former CRUCIFIED member Colin Hayes played guitar from the band’s inception until the end of 2010 and was replaced by original member Aaron Bates, who is featured on the 2008 demo/split and the Dead Of Sleep EP, with vocalist Nick Rockwell, guitarist Phil Trimbur, bassist Clark Todd, and drummer Joey Raygoza completing the lineup. Fans of Ringworm, All Out War, Catharsis, Gehenna and Merauder should stay informed…

The Dead Of Sleep 7” will see vinyl and digital release on September 9th, 2014 via Get This Right Records. The first pressing of the 7” will have a screened cover in a run of 125 copies; 62 on clear with grey smoke and 63 white with grey smoke. Stand by for additional info on the EP in the coming days.

Dead Of Sleep Track Listing:
1. Dead Of Sleep
2. Conduit
3. Unworthy
4. Apathy

SOS: Stereokiller Streaming Fifth Album From Longtime NYC Act

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

As NYC-based heavy punk/hardcore hybrid act, SOS, comes within one week of releasing their fifth independent full-length, today online underground music community Stereokiller is streaming the entire Strength And Conditioning album.

SOS is a fusion of heavy sounds; a maniacal musical beast which flails madly yet seamlessly in all directions at once. Strength And Conditioning is a nearly forty-eight minute excursion into barrier-free musical chaos with heavy melodic grooves, recorded and mixed by Travis Harrison at Serious Business Studios, mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. Lineup changes and a restructuring of the band followed by heavy-duty local performances for the past year formed a six-year gap between albums, but the band’s heavy dedication has paid off, as Strength And Conditioning boasts SOS’ most action-packed mayhem yet

Undergo a listening session with all fourteen tracks from Strength And Conditioning at Stereokiller RIGHT HERE.

This Saturday, July 26th, SOS will play a record release show in their hometown of Queens, New York, opening for Downset. Just three days later, the band will release Strength And Conditioning via digital download and on CD, as always through their own 316 Productions.

SOS Live:
7/26/2014 Blackthorn – Elmhurst, NY w/ Downset, Alekhine’s Gun, Driven Mad, Someonelse, 17 Gates, The Only Weapon

Notorious for playing free, all-ages and DIY/outdoor gigs and parties as well as the massive NYC Marathon every year, in addition to founder Mike SOS’ other activities as the co-vocalist in the now defunct Seizure Crypt, co-producer of the FBOMB live tribute series, his involvement with GLOB (Gorgeous Ladies Of Bloodwrestling), the hostmaster Blackthorn 51 bar and tons more also fueling the beast, SOS is a true workhorse collective. Continuous live events for the band will continue to be announced throughout the coming months.

EARTH: Primitive And Deadly Preorders Made Available; New Official Online Store Launched Today

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

Open-minded music fans the world over have long praised EARTH’s pioneering and visionary delivery of their slow-motion anthems from the Sub Pop albums of the early 1990s, to their more Americana-inclined direction of the early 2000s and beyond. Their willingness to experiment with different sounds and different musicians has always enabled EARTH to remain consistently interesting and undoubtedly always unique. Now, nearly two-and-a-half decades into their musical evolution, the band prepares to release Primitive And Deadly, a truly epic, very diverse collection of songs which flow seamlessly, and while revisiting some of their earliest works, the album also explores massive new sonic territories for EARTH.

With Primitive And Deadly, guitarist Dylan Carlson and long term cohort, drummer Adrienne Davies, manage to pull off the trick of completing an Ouroborean creative cycle, twenty-five years in the making, whilst exploring new directions in their music. For the first time in their diverse second act, they allow themselves to be a rock band, freed of adornment and embellishment. The dialogue between Carlson and Davies remains pivotal, here underpinned by the sympathetic bass of Bill Herzog (Sunn O))), Joel RL Phelps, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) and thickened by additional layers of guitar from Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Caustic Resin) and Jodie Cox (Narrows). Primitive And Deadly also brings forth the band’s first vocal contributions since 1996’s Pentastar LP, and first in the band’s second incarnation, with guest vocalists Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi (Rose Windows), who transform these thundering, organic songs into something approaching traditional pop structures. The foundation of the record was laid in the mystic desert high lands of Joshua Tree, California at Rancho de la Luna where EARTH recorded after hours of meditation on each track’s central theme. Upon returning to Seattle these were edited, arranged and expanded upon at Avast with the help of long-term collaborator Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Eagle Twin). Thick, dense and overdriven, melodically rich and enveloping, Primitive And Deadly is EARTH reaffirming their position as a singular point in the history of rock.

Southern Lord will issue Primitive And Deadly in all deluxe formats in North America on September 2nd. Preorders for the album have just been activated at EARTH’s new official online store which just launched today at THIS LOCATION.

The first single from Primitive And Deadly, “From The Zodiacal Light,” was recently unveiled via Pitchfork RIGHT HERE.

Additionally, fans can currently order the vinyl reissues of Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method and The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull; Hex available here and Bees here.

Following tours of Japan, Australia and New Zealand already completed in support of Primitive And Deadly, EARTH is prepared to return to Europe in just days, with a more than two-week-long festival-heavy tour confirmed. Just weeks after their return, EARTH will bring their new material to American fans on a month-long tour from September 4th through October 3rd, with direct support being provided by dark folk act, King Dude.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY: Drummer Reed Mullin Forced To Sit Out Live Dates

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

Due to a torn rotator cuff, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY drummer Reed Mullin has been forced to sit out the band’s upcoming live dates.

Reads an official statement from the band: “We are sorry to announce that Reed Mullin will not be onboard for this tour. He’s been playing through pain, awaiting a strategic time to repair a full tear of his rotator cuff. That’s a seriously bum shoulder. So he’s going to get that repaired and rehabbed. Suring the interim, we’re enlisted Mr. Eric Hernandez formerly of Kylesa to help us until then. Eric came to our attention when we approached Rick Smith of Torche about filling in and he recommended Eric, who he grew up with in Miami. Eric has also filled in for Ricky in Torche a few times with great results. He is, like Reed, a hard hitter, and thankfully possesses the capacity to learn and digest detailed material quickly and accurately.”

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY is currently leveling the stages of New Zealand and Australia which will be followed by a two-week North American run scheduled to commence on August 20th in Spokane, and come to a close in Vancouver on September 1st. The band will be joined by Bl’ast!, Brant Bjork & The Low Desert Punk Band and Lord Dying.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY [remaining dates]:
7/24/2014 Crowbar – Brisbane, AUS
7/25/2014 NSC – Sydney AUS
7/26/2014 Reverence Hotel – Melbourne AUS
7/27/2014 Enigma Bar – Adelaide AUS
w/ Bl’ast!, Brant Bjork & The Low Desert Punk Band, Lord Dying
8/19/2014The Hop – Spokane, WA [tickets]
8/21/2014 In The Venue – Salt Lake City, UT [tickets]
8/22/2014 Summit Music Hall – Denver, CO [tickets]
8/23/2014 Sister – Albuquerque, NM [tickets]
8/24/2014 Club Red – Mesa, AZ [tickets]
8/26/2014 Brick By Brick – San Diego, CA [tickets]
8/27/2014 The Roxy – Los Angeles, CA [tickets]

8/31/2014 El Corazon – Seattle, WA [tickets]
9/01/2014 The Rickshaw Theater – Vancouver, BC [tickets]

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY released their fittingly titled IX full-length earlier this month via Candlelight Records. Captured by the band alongside long-time friend and colleague John Custer, IX clocks in at nearly forty-five minutes. Sludge, doom, punk… it’s all in the grooves that fans have come to expect from CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. If you missed it, check out the lyric video for “Tarquinius Superbus” at THIS LOCATION.

COC stick to the recipe that served them well on both 2012’s self-titled reboot and the follow-up EP, Megalodon: A little hardcore, a little crossover, a whole lotta Southern rock and (especially) doom metal, all stirred, shuffled, layered and frosted in ways that make guessing their next move impossible. But the band’s strategies are more expansive this time out, their tricks more finely woven into the fabric of each song.” – Decibel

“The album’s production is full with plenty of low end, showcasing the thick riffs and potent rhythm section. Clocking in at just over forty-two-minutes, the band delivers the goods and doesn’t overstay their welcome.” – Loudwire

“…smoke-wreathed grooves and sludgy rushes of belligerence, the album is a meat-and-potatoes feast.” – A.V. Club

“This band is vital, this record a triumph.” – The Obelisk

OMMADON: UK Drone Duo To Release New Full-Length Via Domestic Genocide Records; New Track Streaming At Terrorizer

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

UK drone/doom duo, OMMADON, is set to release their monolithic new album, V, next month. Delivering two mammoth tracks of unadulterated sonic oppression, the appropriately titled fifth full-length, V — which clocks in at neatly ninety chest-caving minutes — was recorded completely live in a forest in the highlands of Scotland. Split across four sides of vinyl, the 180 gram double LP was mastered by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, High On Fire etc.) and worships at the altar of Teeth Of The Lions Rule The Divine,  Sunn O))), early Earth, and all things decibel-challenging. The pair – David Tobin (guitars) and Ewan Mackenzie (drums, keyboards) — are adept at cultivating colossal stockades of noise, as their thick, crushing sound makes full use of impossibly weighty drones and riffs that feel almost infinite.

OMMADON, in cooperation with Terrorizer Magazine, is currently streaming “V1″ in its planet rupturing entirety at THIS LOCATION.

V will be released in North America on August 5th via Domestic Genocide Records. Preorder your copy at THIS LOCATION. Additionally, V is available in the UK via Dry Cough Records HERE, and in the Netherlands via Burning World Records HERE.

“You can bet your favorite Sunn O))) picture disc on this thing sounding heavier than a dying planet…” –Terrorizer

…like trying to imagine your own burial under the Himalayas.” – Echoes And Dust

PORD: French Trio Unites With American Aftermath To Blaze You With Album-Opening Track

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

French noise rock trio, PORD — having recently announced the impending release of their sophomore LP, Wild, via Solar Flare Records — has united with American Aftermath for the unloading of the first sampling of the album. Wild, dubbed by the zine as “intense, noise laden rock and roll that would make Amphetamine Reptile blush” in the write-up of the decimating album opener, “Staring Into Space,” gets the album moving with zero dicking-around. States American Aftermath’s daring wordsmith in his investigation of the song itself, “The track revolves around a dirty, rumbling bass lines and sparse, dissonant guitars that eventually lead into hard rock stampeded hellbent on causing blunt-force trauma. We dig it and so should you.”

Get your first experience of PORD’s new Wild creation with “Staring Into Space” over HERE.

Solar Flare Records will dispatch Wild on September 8th on multiple formats, most of which are now available for preorder; the CD HERE and le LP (on black, or swamp green/bone splatter vinyl) HERE.

Wild Track Listing:
1. Staring Into Space
2. I’m Swimming Home
3. My Bloody Galantine
4. Laguiole Bull’s Balls
5. What Are Tuesdays For?
6. Pools’n’Chicks
7. On The Couch

A trio formed in 2002 in the darkest depths of rural Lozère, France, PORD’s brand of output evolved very quickly toward something much rougher and wilder than imagined; a blend of complexly structured compositions with the throbbing and hypnotic undertow that the trio is so fond of, along with a sometimes heavy and powerful, sometimes twisted rhythmic section, backed by incredibly tortured vocals emerged. In March of 2014, PORD raided Rec Studio in Geneva to record their sophomore LP with Serge Morattel (Knut, Tantrum, Ventura, Basement…). Dubbed Wild, the strewn but cohesive nature of the band’s output on Wild is as contagious as it is caustic, the album’s output showing a renewed musical evolution, with PORD’s typical raging sound coupled with a hint of straight rock and roll on a number of songs. With a faster pace and precise execution, their taut and aggressive delivery remains intact throughout the nearly forty-minute venture. The vocals also evolve toward a more rasping, primitive and offbeat rendering of cruder and increasingly straightforward lyrics.

LAE: Debut LP By Montreal Psychedelic Post-Rock Act To See Release Via The Compound/Battleground

Monday, July 21st, 2014

Bringing a decade-and-a-half of silence to an end, Montreal-based quartet, LAE, is eager to release the band’s official debut full-length release, and the entire reincarnation of the band.

Performing under their original moniker, LAE-TSEU, the band evolved out of the mid-‘90s post-rock/post-hardcore scene, seeking to distance themselves from the established conventions of rock music as well as the trappings of the various alternative subgenres. Not without irony, trace elements of many of those persist in their sound, itself a peculiarly familiar presence, as varied as it is satisfying. Nods to the likes of Three Mile Pilot, Swans, Sonic Youth, Unwound and Slint will surely not go unnoticed, but LAE’s total is far greater than the sum of its influences. Scathing, desperate and heartbreaking vocal sentiments set against richly layered backdrops, amplified and acoustic, melodic and deafening.

After earning a solid regional fanbase and foundation, the band was dissolved in 2001, without having released an official album. Their regional peer acts would go on to receive massive attention just after LAE’s premature and unexpected demise, and it would seem that the band had missed the boat completely as these other hometown acts entered the international spotlight. Yet, perhaps there is more than one boat…

Having reformed with a diehard goal of finally bringing their unfortunately unsung anthems to fruition with more passion and dedication than ever before, LAE excitedly returns to active duty with their impending debut full-length LP coming together for release in late 2014. In mid-2013, LAE’s current lineup — bassist, Ronald Jean-Gilles, drummer Serge Nakauchi Pelletier, and guitarists Stephane Desgroseilliers and Marc Lucas Ablasou — set out to record their debut LP, Break The Clasp, bringing their anthems from two decades ago to new life, completely re-envisioned with incredible musicianship and finesse. To capture these anthems with the appropriately beautiful yet tortured tones, the band sanctioned the talents of producer Steve Austin of Today Is The Day, flying him along with some major pieces of recording equipment from his Austin Enterprises out to Montreal for the recording sessions. Yet, once the recording sessions were underway, Austin instantly became intertwined in the recording process full-on, in the end supplying lead vocals to the entire Break The Clasp LP. An incredible array of musical experimentation seamlessly coalescing into a more than fifty-minute-long, mesmerizing and psychedelic yet anguished style of post-rock, LAE’s mammoth sound is unlike anything else one can imagine; incredibly beautiful yet inescapably depressing.

Late this year, Break The Clasp will finally see its long-awaited dawn through a collaborative release between DIY labels The Compound and Battleground Records, on all digital formats as well as deluxe digitpak CD and deluxe 2xLP formats. The otherworldly cover art crafted by LAE’s longtime cohort Sonny Kay is viewable below.

Stay tuned for the official street date as well as samples of the album and more to be released in the coming weeks. LAE will also take to the highways of North America in support of Break The Clasp before the end of the year as well.
