DIE CHOKING: Debut LP From Philadelphia Hypergrind Trio To See Late Summer Release Via The Compound; New Tour Dates Confirmed

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

Philadelphia’s hypergrind violators, DIE CHOKING, will release their debut full-length LP, III, through The Compound Recs late this Summer, as the band begins their most rigorous tour schedule to date in the coming weeks.

III was recorded in April with Will Yip at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania (Lauryn Hill, Circa Survive, Blacklisted) capturing DIE CHOKING’s most intense material yet with absolutely superior sound and production, the band then sanctioning Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, From Ashes Rise, Nails) for its mastering. With seemingly implausible heaviness delivered at an absolutely unstoppable velocity, the eleven tracks on III deliver even faster BPM-rates and more complicated arrangements than the band’s prior releases, the new material merging more elements of hardcore punk and crust with their blinding speed/grind metal. Socio-political topics as intense as the music itself permeate each blazing anthem, which continue the ongoing theme carrying through from their smoldering self-titled debut and subsequent II 7” releases, with tracks XI through XXI. The impending debut LP from Philly’s most unhinged act promises to be one of the most violent, high-speed releases of 2015.

DIE CHOKING will partner with The Compound, the underworld label faction of Earsplit, for the release of III, as with both of their prior 7” EPs. The album will be issued in September on all digital platforms as well as three color variations of 180-gram colored LP with exclusive colors and merch bundle packages. The cover artwork, confirmed street date and more will be issued in the coming days, followed by new official videos, audio samples and more from III. See the III album trailer HERE.

Purchase the final copies of DIE CHOKING’s II 7” on red wax including an actual document serving as a living will, and the self-titled debut 7” on black wax via The Compound, RIGHT HERE.

While DIE CHOKING tours and plays live on a fairly intense regular basis already, the group’s most intense touring yet is in store for the rest of this year and well into next. New July shows booked in Montclair, New Jersey on the 1st — a benefit for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention — followed by a trio of shows in Philadelphia, New York City and another city to be confirmed on July 10th through 12th. Another run will see the band raid Baltimore, Knoxville and Asheville July 17th through 19th. DIE CHOKING will close the month, headlining Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn on July 29th. August is already being booked as the band was just confirmed as support for the legendary Catharsis in Philly on August 7th, with more Summer shows to be announced in the days ahead and October West Coast US and February 2016 European tours to follow.

Stand by for a barrage of DIE CHOKING updates in the impending weeks.

WATERTANK: Second LP From French Noisy Alternative/Post-Rock Quartet Out Now On Solar Flare Records And Streaming In Its Entirety

Monday, June 29th, 2015

Destination Unknown, the sophomore album from French quartet, WATERTANK, is out today through Solar Flare Records and playing in its entirety.

Two years after their first LP, Nantes-based WATERTANK returns with their nine-track full-length, Destination Unknown, bringing forth nearly thirty-five minutes of brand new material. While the album came together quickly, being composed and recorded with unusually short notice, the LP cohesively reveals a more confident band through this new batch of strongly crafted songs showing several sides of the band’s merging of grittier, noise rock-influenced elements and infectious, melodious alternative/post-rock atmospheres. The band is still in love with melodic hooks, and downtuned heavy riffing, as heard especially in cuts like “Dcvr” and “Doomed Drifters,” yet Destination Unknown sees them evolving from their post-hardcore background in tracks like “Contrails” and exploring new territories completely within “Scheme” and the title track, as always aiming to deliver lasting listening enjoyment. Once again recorded by Patrice Guillerme (Papier Tigre, Patriotic Sunday) and mastered by Carl Saff (Coliseum, Pilot To Gunner), Destination Unknown marks a step forwards for the renewed lineup. If you’re into Torche, Quicksand, Jawbox, Sense Field and Failure, WATERTANK is for you.

Stream WATERTANK’s Destination Unknown in its entirety now at Solar Flare Records’ Bandcamp at THIS LOCATION watch the video for “Surrender” via Noisey HERE.

Destination Unknown is officially out today via the noise rock specialists at Clermont, France’s Solar Flare Records, on CD, LP and digital formats. View the multiple options and bundles HERE.

VALDUR: Mammoth Lakes-Based Blackened Death Legion Wages War With “Blessings Of The Goat,” Now Streaming At No Clean Singing; Pathetic Scum To Drop Next Week

Friday, June 26th, 2015
Pathetic Scum is the forthcoming new full-length offering from the Sierra Mountains’ own blackened death legion, VALDUR. Captured entirely at the band’s clandestine Bloody Mountain Bunker, mixed by drummer Matthew and mastered by Dan at Morbid Mastering, VALDUR offers up seven punishing odes of audio abhorrence as only VALDUR can conjure. A true testament of a diseased society gone sour, Pathetic Scum picks up where the repugnant sounds of 2013’s critically-adored At War With left off. Featuring the addition of new guitarist, Vuke, the record seethes with a blizzardy onslaught of warring riffs, bestial blasts, wrath-fueled vocal offensives and an overwhelming atmosphere of pandemonium, trepidation and all-encompassing ruthlessness.

The record was recently listed at #5 on OC Weekly’s Ten Best Metal Albums Of Summer 2015 with the publication noting, “VALDUR produces a sonic wall of sheer terror on tracks such as ‘Tank Torture.’ The vocal performance… evokes those scenes in horror movies where a possessed protagonist is swarmed by all of the voices in their head simultaneously. Drummer Matthew invokes a sense of fear with nonstop pounding and caustic cymbal crashes on tracks such as ‘Blessings Of The Goat.’ The album art is a stark world of blacks and greys, but the venom spewed forth by the band musically and lyrically is one hundred percent black,” while No Clean Singing concurs, “The rhythm section are a couple of merciless bone-grinders, and the cavernous vocals are the utterances of a lurching horror. And the needling riffs are not only pestilential, they’re also catchy.” Adds The Midlands Rocks, “Pestilent, putrescent and pummeling, beauty takes on a different meaning on this album. Tempos are dragged, forced, fucked; riffs are ripped, ravaged, rabid; and vocals are vehement, vile and venomous (and alliteration is milked for all it’s worth). These tracks are not crafted. They’re bashed in and out of shape until they bleed the wrong color. Ruthless, uncompromising, and vile beyond compare, VALDUR are the embodiment of exquisite malice. Bastards. And oh me, oh my, oh malignant mother of misery, they’ve been making music since 2003. That means there’s more of this shit to feast upon.”

As a precursor to its official unveiling next week, today No Clean Singing is offering up third cut, “Blessings Of The Goat,” for communal consumption further enthusing, “The drums roll like an avalanche, the riffs vibrate with poisonous radioactivity, the roaring/howling vocals exude an aura of ravenous hunger and fury. But as overpoweringly ominous as the song’s atmosphere is, it also strikes with the impact and energy of a lightning bolt (or a hundred of them), and its doom-shrouded central melody is capable of saturating the mind and staying there. If the four horsemen of the apocalypse need a soundtrack as they ride us into the dust, they don’t have to look further than ‘Blessings Of The Goat.’”

Get goaty with “Blessings Of The Goat” now playing at THIS LOCATION.

Featuring past and current members of Weverin, Endless Blizzard and Plutocracy, VALDUR was forged at the turn of the century in a small mountain town located in the pulsating heart of the Sierra Mountains where the Death Valley desert lands meet the ascending Mt. Whitney and where the unholy collective dwells without interference of fashionable scenes or rulebooks.

Pathetic Scum will be officially unveiled digitally and in digipak format via the band’s own Bloody Mountain Records on June 30th, 2015.

IMMORTAL BIRD: Chicago-Based Blackened Death Grind Misfits Unleash First Helping Of Empress/Abscess Full-Length Via Decibel Magazine; Track Features Guest Spot By Weekend Nachos’ John Hoffman

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

Empress/Abscess is the impending new full-length from Chicago-based blackened death grind misfits IMMORTAL BIRD. Captured by Pete Grossmann (Weekend Nachos, Harms Way, Dead In The Dirt) at Bricktop Recording in Chicago, Illinois and mixed and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice, Nader Sadek, Atheist, Origin etc.) at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves in Queens, New York Empress/Abscess finds former drummer/vocalist, Rae Amitay, swapping in her drum stool for a full-time position at the mic with longtime live drummer, Garry Naples (Novembers Doom) taking her place at the kit. The result is a harrowing sound excursion through the bowels of human existence. Indeed, picking up where 2013’s Akrasia EP left off, Empress/Abscess delves once again into a cesspool of misery, fury, and anguish.

In an advance investigation of the record, the UK’s Intravenous Magazine elaborates, “IMMORTAL BIRD peddle a ferocious blend of black metal, thrash metal, death metal and crusty grindcore that can only really be summed up with the word… extreme. Scathing guitars, blistering blast beats and demonic vocals power through …Empress/Abscess, leaving scorched ears and speakers in their wake. With nods to the likes of elements of early Satyricon, Nile, Suffocation, and Venom within their technically proficient execution, songs such as the opener ‘Neoplastic,’ as well as ‘Saprophyte,’ and ‘The Sycophant’ exude a relentless brutality that still keeps things nice and tight with some great memorable riffs thrown into the mix.” The publication furthers, “The album is brilliantly mixed and the production reflects the technical prowess at work on the recordings. It is a strong, self-assured, tight, but most of all wonderfully fresh and modern sounding album.”

In anticipation of its official unveiling next month, today Decibel Magazine offers up a taste of opening hymn, “Neoplastic,” featuring a guest appearance by John Hoffman of Weekend Nachos. Relays Amitay: “‘Neoplastic was one of the first songs we wrote after the Akrasia EP was finished, and it went through several different live incarnations before we arrived at the version we recorded. I never envisioned having a guest vocalist when we were writing the album, but John has such an aggressive, inimitable voice and killer presence that I just had to ask! I think it adds something very cool to the track and I’m stoked he was a part of it.”

Feel the quake of “Neoplastic,” now playing at Decibel at THIS LOCATION.

In related IMMORTAL BIRD missives, the band will  make appearances at Shadow Woods Metal Fest (Midnight, Occulation, Iron Man etc.), Southwest Terror Fest (Sleep, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Dropdead, Bongripper etc.) and Death To False Metal (Whiplash, Krieg, Secrets Of The Sky, Valkyrie, Imperial Triumphant, Nightbitch, Secret Cutter etc.) with future onstage demolitions in their plotting stages.

Forged by drummer/vocalist/lyricist Rae Amitay, IMMORTAL BIRD was brought to fruition by cowriter and guitarist Evan Berry and bassist John Picillo. Their critically-adored debut EP, which Decibel crowned, “dark and twisting,” and Ghost Cult dubbed, “distinctly disturbing and beautifully harsh,” was released in December of 2013. Following several tours that took the band across the United States and into Canada, IMMORTAL BIRD entered the studio to record their debut full-length, Empress/Abscess.

Empress/Abscess will be released on July 14th, 2015 as a collaborative effort, with Broken Limbs Recordings taking charge with vinyl and cassettes, while IMMORTAL BIRD will be self-releasing the CD/digital version under the moniker Manatee Rampage Recordings.

SKINLESS: New York’s Favorite Death Metal Marauders Reveal New Album Art Video At No Clean Singing; Only The Ruthless Remain Out Now

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

In celebration of the official release of their long-anticipated Only The Ruthless Remain full-length, which dropped via Relapse Records earlier this month to the riotous applause of metallers globally, today New York’s favorite death metal marauders, SKINLESS,untether the fiery new album art video for closing number, “Barbaric Proclivity.”

Bedecked in the sadistic grooves and flawless musicianship for which the band has become notorious and adorned in the harrowing cover illustration of Ken Sarafin, Only The Ruthless Remain features SKINLESS‘ now-classic, late ’90s lineup of founding guitarist Noah Carpenter, vocalist Sherwood Webber, bassist Joe Keyser and drummer Bob Beaulac, with the addition of second guitarist, Dave Matthews, and marks the band’s first proper full-length offering in nearly a decade.

Reaping critical hails from media outlets both stateside and abroad, MetalSucks calls the outting, “a rewarding record that scratches the most persistent of death metal itches,” and a, “lean, zero-flaws death metal dynamo.” Apoch’s Metal Review crowns Only The Ruthless Remain, one of the finest albums in SKINLESS’ repertoire,” further elaborating, “This isn’t just an album SKINLESS fans will lovingly embrace, but a creation that stands as one of the top offerings of 2015 within the death metal genre, proving the time away from the studio, as well as one another, has only strengthened them as a unit,” while Exclaim boasts, “With every crushing rhythm and breakneck riff, it’s as if SKINLESS never left, delivering everything you’d expect from the band… Only the Ruthless Remain is an exceptional, solid return from the very missed masters of death metal.” Heathen Harvest champions a record that’s, “well-written, meaty,” and, “just so fucking heavy.” In Your Speakers issues,The seven tracks of Only The Ruthless Remain are each dynamic enough in themselves to form a comprehensive listening experience, yet maintain the traditional SKINLESS appeal; it’s really the whole package. SKINLESS is a band that can survive both a break-up and more than twenty years in death metal, and if you need a reminder why that is, Ruthless has more than enough to persuade you.” Adds Wonderbox Metal, “Memorable, impressive songs are the meaty main course in this sumptuous feast of rotten flesh. SKINLESS are heavy and they’ve always been exceptionally heavy. Death Metal by its very nature is a heavy form of music, but there’s heavy and then there’s HEAVY. SKINLESS own the latter.”

Following a pre-release stream of “Barbaric Proclivity,” via MetalSucks who gushed, “This track is straight-up bloodthirsty… It will grab you by your waist and squeeze your innards out of your mouth like so much toothpaste,” No Clean Singing spews forth its accompanying art clip as created by bassist Joe Keyser, noting, “It’s such a good song, a real meat-grinding death metal machine, but one that does more than prod the reptile part of your brain with savage riffs, skull-cracking drumbeats, horrific gutturals, and putrescent shrieks. It also couples those gruesome, grinding segments to irresistibly headband-inducing passages that alternately charge like a freight train and slam like massive, methodical hammer blows right on top of your fragile skull. But that’s still not all! Along with a lot of near-atonal riff murder, it also includes an atmospheric melodic interlude that heightens the song’s aura of morbid oppressiveness.”

Check it out at THIS LOCATION.

You can also sample the band’s video for namesake track, “Skinless,” featuring a visual smorgasbord of lethal injections, human flaying and general group-inflicted suffering, playing at THIS LOCATION or “Serpenticide,” streaming at SoundCloud HERE and YouTube HERE.

Only The Ruthless Remain was captured by Tom Case at Edie Road Studio and Doomsday Bunker Studio, both in upstate New York, with vocals tracked by Dave Otero (Cephalic Carnage, Primitive Man etc.) at Flatline Audio in Denver, Colorado, and the entire slab of audio violence mastered by Brad Boatright (Obituary, Nails, Integrity etc.) at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon.

Only The Ruthless Remain is currently available on CD, LP and digitally via Relapse Records. Limited Relapse 25 Year Anniversary editions of the CD and LP are also be available. For order bundles, visit THIS LOCATION. Desirers of the digitals, go HERE.

BURNT BOOKS: South Carolina Punk Instigators Prepare For Cross-Country Tour Beginning Next Week

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

Columbia, South Carolina’s antagonistic punks, BURNT BOOKS, begin a new tour in just over a week, which sees the band traveling to tour the West Coast for the first time.

BURNT BOOKS’ second full-length Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire, was released in March through Kylesa-owned Retro Futurist Records. With thirty-six minutes of the outfit’s unique and mesmerizing brew of discontented, avant-garde punk rock, the band demonstrates incredible growth in their songwriting and delivery on the new record, while retaining the bleak antagonism and angular gnarliness their self-titled debut deployed. Once again enlisting Phillip Cope of Kylesa to produce Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire at The Jam Room Recording Studio, upon its completion, Cope signed BURNT BOOKS for its release.

The band’s major local weekly, Free Times, called Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire BURNT BOOKS’ “best album yet” in an interview with the band, continuing, “the band doesn’t lose its knack for jagged post-hardcore riffs or abrupt math-rock rhythms. Lollis still volleys between an elegant folk-singer’s croon and a scabrous crust-punk scream. Now, though, these impulses feel more fully consolidated… The band’s hardcore foundation is intact, too, but the moments of brute force are cast in relief by more spacious, melodic passages.” Cvlt Nation offered, “Let me tell you a story about Kate Bush having a brain transplant with At the Drive In, then the two going back in time to high school where Black Flag were their band teachers,” and Selective Memory’s interrogation of the outfit issues in part, “this group has formed a surreal existence in the punk continuum. Not as abrasive as the punk that influenced this band, and not overtly artful to dissuade from the meaning of these songs, they strike an interesting balance between the two. Listen carefully and plan on being wow’ed over the power this band possesses…”

Following bouts of regional touring and an East Coast tour earlier in the year, BURNT BOOKS now begins one of their more intense routings with a sixteen-city run, which sees the band touring making their West Coast live debut. The tour begins next Wednesday, July 1st in Asheville, North Carolina, then cuts westward with more than two weeks worth of shows across the West Coast and back before the tour closes down in Atlanta, Georgia on July 17th.

Stream BURNT BOOKS’ Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire alongside an interview with the band at Selective Memory HERE.

With vinyl and cassette versions in the works, Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire is available on CD via Retro Futurist Records HERE, and Bandcamp HERE, as well as via all major digital outlets.

STOP BREATHING: Southern Cali Hardcore/Punk Brigade Launches “No Escape” Track Via New Noise Magazine; Second LP V Out In August

Southern California-based punk/melodic hardcore brigade, STOP BREATHING, has premiered the first single from the outfit’s impending second LP, V, through New Noise Magazine.

Approaching release in August, V is STOP BREATHING’s first LP since their No Idea Records-released self-titled album in 2012, and fifth overall release, recorded in their fifth year as a band. Deploying twelve rampaging tracks in just over thirty minutes, V merges the restless angst of 7 Seconds, Poison Idea, The Descendents, and The Circle Jerks delivered in a fired-up contemporary attack fans of Good Riddance, Kid Dynamite, Bane and Kill Your Idols will dive headfirst into. “No Escape,” the eighth track on V, comes tearing forth today via New Noise Magazine, the band issuing with the tune, “It’s about how we are all stuck on planet earth, there’s nowhere for us to go, yet we continue to kill each other. The amount of money, brain power, and resources going into creating all these different ways to kill each other kinda sickens me. I hope one day we will realize we’re all stuck here, we can just continue to kill each other, or learn to work together and do so much more with our lives!”

Unload STOP BREATHING’s “No Escape” anthem via New Noise Magazine now at THIS LOCATION.

STOP BREATHING will release V on 180-gram vinyl, in two color variations, via Burning Tree Records and Rotten To The Core Records with a limited cassette version through their own Bad Touch Records on August 11th. Preorders for the LP are now live HERE.

The current upcoming run of live dates for STOP BREATHING includes a show July 1st in Ventura with Blasting Concept, another on the 10th in Thousand Oaks with Ten Foot Pole, and a record release show for V on August 28th at the first day of Nardfest in Ventura with Dr. Know, Excel, Nails and many others.

STOP BREATHING Live:
7/01/2015 The Tavern – Ventura, CA w/ Blasting Concept
7/10/2015 Borderline – Thousand Oaks, CA w/ Ten Foot Pole
8/28/2015 Ventura Theater – Ventura, CA @ Nardfest w/ Dr. Know, Excel, Nails, more

Oxnard, California-based STOP BREATHING is a tight knit union of bandits also hailing from The Fucking Wrath, Glass & Ashes, The Missing 23rd, Young Livers and other acts. Having cranked out a pounding brew of energetic skate-punk/late-‘80s hardcore since 2009, the band takes things to the next level with their fifth official release, V. The band’s second LP was recorded by the band and mastered by Paul Miner at Buzz Bomb Sound Labs (Death By Stereo, H20), and is completed by cover art created by Kane Shimek and Ruben Perez. With the departure of Carter to Portland and Jesse to school commitments, STOP BREATHING enlisted Chris Goodrich (Catholic Spit) on bass and longtime friend Kile Garcia on second guitar, making their delivery all the more unstoppable.

WISDOM IN CHAINS Releases “When We Were Young” Official Video; The God Rhythm Release Show Goes Down This Weekend

In the wake of their fifth official full-length release, The God Rhythm, WISDOM IN CHAINS has just issued the first official video from the LP, as the band prepares for their headlining record release show for the record this weekend.

Surging with fourteen new tracks blending even more metallic intensity into their oi/punk-inspired hardcore, WISDOM IN CHAINSThe God Rhythm was released last week via Fast Break! Records. Loaded with nearly forty minutes of unyielding, groove-heavy action laden with inspiring lyrics and empowering gang chants, the LP was captured in bruising clarity, recorded by Len Carmichael at Trax East and Carmichael Sound, and the vocals recorded at Mountainside Studios by Rich Rescigno. The band’s new video was created for the track, “When We Were Young,” the song’s insightful look back at the early days of life blends an entertaining plotline with performance footage, filmed and produced by There’s Always Next Year Productions.

Shred to WISDOM IN CHAINS’ new “When We Were Young” video, featured on the Fast Break! Records home page HERE and directly via YouTube HERE.

Also stream the entire The God Rhythm album through Blow The Scene RIGHT HERE and watch the extensive interview trailer on the album’s creation at New Noise Magazine HERE.

The God Rhythm is available now on CD and multiple colors/pressings of 12” vinyl including merch bundles via Fast Break! Records RIGHT HERE, and through iTunes HERE.

WISDOM IN CHAINS will celebrate the release of The God Rhythm with hometown/area fans this Saturday, June 27th at Club Reverb in Reading, Pennsylvania, the record release show including an outdoor BBQ event, as well as live support from Strength For A Reason, Yesterday’s Youth and more. WISDOM IN CHAINS will also make their return to This Is Hardcore in Philadelphia on July 23rd joining the likes of the Misfits, The Exploited, the Cro-Mags, Negative Approach, Chokehold, Nails, All Out War, Bane, Biohazard and many others. August will see the band returning to Europe, confirmed to perform at Brutal Assault in the Czech Republic in early August with At The Gates, Cannibal Corpse, Killing Joke, Napalm Death, Nuclear Assault, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Triptykon and more, with a set of tour dates surrounding the festival to be announced in the coming days.

WISDOM IN CHAINS Tour Dates:
6/27/2015 Club Reverb – Reading, PA *record release show [info]
7/23/2015 The Electric Factory – Philadelphia, PA @ This Is Hardcore [info]
8/05-08/2015 Fortress Josefov, CZ @ Brutal Assault [info]

In an interview with WISDOM IN CHAINS early into the promotion of The God Rhythm, No End In Sight Zine writes, “It takes an unbelievable level of passion, commitment, and sacrifice to keep a hardcore band two-stepping, moshing, and screaming for as long as Wisdom In Chains has. They’ve endured everything from being robbed to becoming family men with full time jobs, yet they still bring more energy to their live shows than most bands half their ages, and they continue to release some of the catchiest hardcore albums you’ll ever lay your ears upon.” Stereokiller’s crushing 4.5/5 review of the album issues in part, “I’m not sure how many listens it took me, but I think I found my favorite WISDOM IN CHAINS song yet with ‘Best Of Me.’ Lyrically it speaks to me on a level that I haven’t experienced many times before. Maybe I’m just interpreting the words to fit my life, but that’s fine, and that’s what the beauty of what WISDOM IN CHAINS is. There are countless hardcore bands writing three chord songs about being mad, but how many are writing actual songs? Songs that conjure an emotion other than aggression?” Legends Arising praised the record as well, offering, “The God Rhythm is an incredibly forceful hardcore album, addressing all the themes you’d expect and some more. After more than a decade WISDOM IN CHAINS still improves and broadens, without ever compromising the scorching fury that made the band what it is today. Get. This. Record.” And About.com’s Heavy Metal sector declares, “Hardcore vocals combine with thrashy riffs and a punk attitude to craft an album that’s aggressive and potent. It’s also packed with memorable songs and shoutalong/singalong choruses.”
