GODHUNTER: Tormented Tucson Quintet On The Warpath In 2012

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Like an encompassing dust storm full of fire and broken whiskey bottles and expended weed smoke, Tucson, Arizona’s GODHUNTER are preparing to suffocate the planet with their devastating hymns this year.

Through diehard D.I.Y. ethics and self-promotion, GODHUNTER have preyed upon the weak-minded scenesters and have defied pigeonholing genre classifications through a savage amalgamation of sheer heaviness, both live and through recorded proof via several EPs, split releases and compilation inclusions since their 2009 formation. All five members of the band are heavily involved in the local scene and hail from other previous and current acts across the region, yet bring their most ferocious dynamics to life in GODHUNTER; the result is a sludge -bred sub-hardcore blend of caustic riffery laced with multiple scathing vocal approaches.

GODHUNTER’s latest output, the 2011-released Wolves, showcases the band’s most crushing material to date, and while considered by the band to be an EP, the beast clocks in with over 32-minutes of material.

Stream Wolves in its entirety now at GODHUNTER’s Bandcamp page.

With local and regional touring a constant part of the GODHUNTER mission of intent, the band have supported national acts including St. Vitus, Crowbar, The Sword, Red Fang, Early Graves, The Atlas Moth, Intronaut and Black Tusk in addition to countless indie acts. 2012 will bring much more touring to the table for the band as new live assaults are announced over the coming months. The band will also record/release several other indie releases over the coming months before investing time into a brand new full-length late in the year.

Stay tuned; the coming months will be filled with news of GODHUNTER’s ongoing rapture…

STRONG INTENTION: Exclusive Track Premiere Hosted By Decibel Magazine

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Today Decibel Magazine unveils the sadistic sounds of “3rd Space Guerrilla Generator,” from Maryland powerviolence miscreants STRONG INTENTION. The track comes off the band’s soon-to-be-unleashed Razorblade Express EP and features guest vocals by Eyehategod vocalist/wordsmith Mike Williams.

Comments STRONG INTENTION’s founding frontman Zac Ohler of the tune:The song was written as a quick blast of venom directed towards the ongoing concrete sprawl and urban development around the town I was living in. While the interior of the city and its neighborhoods fell into ruin, crime and squalor, the businessmen were riding the wave of the housing and commercial building boom at the beginning of the decade with no sense of intelligent city planning, destroying miles and miles of green space around the city I once knew.”

Witness “3rd Space Guerrilla Generator” HERE.

Razorblade Express will be released via PATAC Records on June 1, 2012 with the first pressing limited to just 500 copies. This isn’t one to sleep on! In addition, Razorblade Express features bass work by Cattle Decapitation’s Derek Engemann. Commends About.com in a recent review of the EP: “STRONG INTENTION’s major strength is the variety of speeds on most tracks as they tend to vary back and forth and unfurl a major bit of chaos on the listener. It is with these attributes that the listener is constantly hit with something new, whether it be slow blues laden sludge or over the top hardcore.”

In related news, STRONG INTENTION will bring their sonic menace to the stage. The live takeover will begin with a warm-up show opening for Marduk and 1349 on June 2 in Baltimore. From there the band will join fellow grind heathens Phobia for the East Coast Filth Tour 2012 set to commence June 3 in Detroit. STRONG INTENTION will be joined by Misery Index/Pig Destroyer drummer Adam Jarvis for the short run of shows.

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

As previously announced, this June Neurot Recordings will issue a special three-way split CD in tribute to late American folk music hero Townes Van Zandt in North America, the homage bearing contributions from SCOTT KELLY (Neurosis, Shrinebuilder, Tribes of Neurot, etc.), STEVE VON TILL (Neurosis, Tribes of Neurot, Harvestman, etc.) and SCOTT “WINO” WEINRICH (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, The Hidden Hand, Shrinebuilder, etc.).

As part of their weekly “Wino Wednesday” installment series, today The Obelisk is hosting an exclusive stream of one of Weinrich’s offerings from the Van Zandt homage, in the form of the record’s seventh song, “Nothing,” RIGHT HERE.

Also still available is Scott Kelly’s rendition of “St. John The Gambler” downloadable HERE.

After having performed material by Van Zandt solo and through various collaborations on stage over recent years, on solo releases and more, the aptly entitled Songs of Townes Van Zandt brings several songs each from STEVE VON TILL, SCOTT KELLY and WINO together in praise of his deep musical influence on them all. Through a personal contact of the artists, newly-formed label My Proud Mountain was founded specially in order to release this tribute, with Neurot Recordings handling the North American release of the album on June 12th.

SIX FEET UNDER: First Week Chart Numbers Revealed; 18 Nights Of Blood Tour To Commence

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Undead, the latest installment of audio brutality from death metal deviants SIX FEET UNDER, entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #5 upon its first week of release! In addition, Undead landed at at #30 on the Billboard Top Independent Album Chart, #22 on the Billboard Top Hard Music Albums Chart, #14 Billboard Top Current Albums Chart and #183 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.

In Canada, the record ranked in at #34 on the Hard Music Chart, #199 on the Top 200 Current Albums Chart, #167 on the iTunes Top 200 Chart, #35 on the iTunes Rock Chart and #3 on the iTunes Metal Chart. Undead reaped additional praise in Germany entering the German Media Market/Saturn Album Charts at #56 and the German Media Control Trend Charts at #40.

Comments vocalist/death metal maverick Chris Barnes: “Thank you to all of our fans for embracing our new album Undead with such ravenous fervor! And to all at Metal Blade Records for their belief in the band all these years and all the hard work of everyone at the label! This marks the first time in SIX FEET UNDER’s career, as well as my own, that we have reached Billboard’s Top 200. It is proof positive that underground music and death metal is not dead and is still a force to be dealt with. A very special thanks to the decades of hate that spawned the focus that went into this album. Cheers! It’s 4:20, motherfucker!”

Crowned “the best thing SFU have recorded since Maximum Violence,” by Decibel, “an album on which this new level of musicianship adds value without tarnishing SIX FEET UNDER’s legacy of brutality,” by Outburn and simply a “kickass SIX FEET UNDER record,” by Revolver, Undead was unleashed to North American ears via Metal Blade on May 22 and offers an updated lineup of Barnes alongside guitarist Rob Arnold (ex- Chimaira), longtime guitarist Steve Swanson (ex-Massacre), bassist Jeff Hughell (ex-Brain Drill, ex-Vile), and drummer Kevin Talley (Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Chimaira).

In conjunction with the record’s release, SIX FEET UNDER will embark on a near three-week run of live ceremonies next week. The 18 Nights Of Blood Tour will begin in Atlanta, Georgia on June 8. The band will be joined by newly recruited rhythm guitarist Ola Englund who takes the place of Rob Arnold. Support will be provided by Dying Fetus and Revocation.

ABSU Forced To Cancel Chaos In Tejas Performance; Proscriptor Goes Under The Blade Just Hours After MDF Set

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Mythological occult metal artisans ABSU regretfully announce the cancellation of their set at this weekend’s Chaos In Tejas festivities, where they were confirmed to headline the show at Red 7 this Saturday with support from Terrorism, Loss, Morbosidad, Ares Kingdom and Black Witchery.

Immediately following their bludgeoning performance at the opening night of this year’s sweltering installment of Maryland Deathfest this past Thursday night, ABSU drummer/vocalist Proscriptor had to rush back to Texas due to a knee infection. Following two instantaneous surgeries, Proscriptor will be in good health and back to 110% efficiency by the mid portion of June, but not in time to perform as scheduled on Saturday night.

This cancellation is disheartening to the band for the moment, as they were fully planning on leveling all in earshot at the performance this weekend; however, this procedure will now ensure that the band will be fully operational for the previously mentioned forthcoming ABSU live assaults throughout North and South America, which are being confirmed now to be announced in the weeks just ahead. Stay tuned to be inundated with new information on said events.

IHSAHN: New Track Stream Available Via Guitar World

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Today Guitarworld.com hosts the exclusive premiere of IHSAHN’s “Introspection,” the third track off the legendary vocalist/guitarist’s forthcoming new full-length, Eremita. Set for release on June 19 via Candlelight Records, the nine-track opus was recorded and produced at Telemark’s Ivory Shoulder Studios, with additional tracking completed at Notodden’s Juke Joint Studio and Seattle’s Envisage Audio and mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth) at Fascination Street Studios in Orebo, Sweden. Alongside IHSAHN, the album features performances from drummer Tobias Ornes Andersen (Leprous), saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining – Norway), guitarist Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore), and vocalists Devin Townsend, Einar Solberg (Leprous), and Heidi S. Tveitan (Star of Ash). Exhibiting IHSAHN’s highly-trained guitar and keyboard skills, Eremita (latin for hermit) is a journey that is sure to find an expanded audience for the revered 36-year-old.

Feast your ears on “Introspection” at THIS LOCATION.

IHSAHN’s prodigious and prolific talents have been at the forefront of heavy music for the past two decades. He began his career at age thirteen as a member of what would become fledgling black metal crew Emperor. As a band, Emperor would both define and refine metal, pushing the boundaries of what was considered possible within the most arcane of art forms and taking some of the most adventurous and extreme music of all time to a huge global audience. With albums like seminal In The Nightside Eclipse (recorded when IHSAHN was only seventeen), and Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk, Emperor obliterated all-comers and became one of the most revered metal bands in history. After the release of their final masterpiece, Prometheus: The Discipline Of Fire & Demise in 2001, IHSAHN announced that the band were to part ways to enable himself and his colleagues to pursue new creative avenues.

“With Eremita IHSAHN proves yet again that he is one of the most influential, progressive and enduring musicians to emerge out of the classic Norwegian black metal scene.” – Guitar World

IHSAHN just keeps getting better and better with every album he releases. He’s really come into his own as one of the most talented musicians and songwriters in all of metal, and his distinct, singular sound has come a long way from his days in Emperor.” – MetalSucks

“…without a doubt the most ambitious and experimental of IHSAHN’s solo albums and it another step further away from his black metal roots.” – This Is Not A Scene

IHSAHN moves into a new period of his solo career that mixes avant-garde oddity with catchy song writing, and extreme metal with what can only be described as ‘evil big band sax.’” – Metal Underground

PHOBIA: Full Album Streaming Via AOL Spinner!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Legendary grindcore merchants PHOBIA today bring their sonic violence to the masses via AOL Spinner. Check out forthcoming new full-length, Remnants of Filth, in its entirety at THIS LOCATION.

Set for public release through Willowtip Records on June 5, Remnants of Filth easily stands as one of the most enraged releases in the band’s iconic discography. With 22 notorious years of charged auditory mayhem under their belts, Remnants Of Filth surges with eighteen socio-political grind hymns in about as many minutes. Produced and mixed by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed) at Visceral Sound Studios in Bethesda, Maryland and engineered by Mike Harrison at Winter Skies Productions in San Antonio, Texas, MetalSucks commended the band noting: “PHOBIA have grindcore down, playing on the element of chaos that exists between punk and metal and volleying with ease between the two, sounding equally comfortable churning chords over d-beats and acting like machines of war over blasts.” Adds Thrashhead earnestly: “PHOBIA isn’t reinventing the wheel; frankly, they don’t need to. What you get here is grindcore, plain and simple.”

PHOBIA will be spreading their hostility throughout North America this year. The takeover will begin this Thursday at the annual Chaos In Tejas Fest kickoff in Austin with Nasum, Whitehorse, mass Grave and more! From there the band will head to Tampa, Florida for this year’s edition of the Scion Rock Fest alongside Sick Of It all, All Pigs Must Die, Repulsion, Terror and so many more. In conjunction with the release of Remnants Of Filth, PHOBIA will join forces with power violence insurgents Strong Intention for the The East Coast Filth Tour 2012 set to commence June 3 in Detroit and decimate 9 cities.

SLEEP: Stoner Metal Icons To Play Four Special U.S. Shows Next Month

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Following a near month-long stretch of European live dates, currently underway, stoner metal icons SLEEP will play four special U.S. shows next month in Florida, Washington and California. The performances come in celebration of the epic deluxe reissue of Dopesmoker released via Southern Lord Recordings earlier this month. Entirely remastered from the original smoke-encrusted Ampex reels, the reissue features an unreleased live recording of one their greatest live performances — “Holy Mountain” from San Francisco’s I-Beam in 1994 — as well as a brand new artwork by long time SLEEP artist Arik Roper.

Dopesmoker stands as one of the towering achievements in recent metal history: a mesmerizing, intoxicating, and incredibly complex composition that remains unrivaled in the evolution of stoner metal. In a recent review, Alarm Magazine christened it “a monolith of metal,” MSN echoed the sentiment calling the record, “one of the most influential stoner/doom albums ever recorded,” while Pitchfork crowned Dopesmoker “Best New Reissue” noting, “it’s an hour of adventure and momentum, where the lumber and the repetition somehow always push ahead. At a moment when black metal reinventers and D-beat revivers seem to dominate large sections of the heavy music world, maybe the thought of a resin-voiced singer intoning for an hour over riffs that wrap into themselves and drums that aim ever for infinity seems boring. But no matter how many times they had to record or rehearse ‘Dopesmoker’ to master it, or no matter how much pressure London placed on them to make something more commercial than personal, SLEEP sound as if their very existence depends upon the successful exercise of this weed ritual…. This record’s influence on substance, style, and simple ambition within heavy metal has long outlived the band that made it. “

Catch SLEEP live this Summer and check out footage of the band’s pre-Roadburn rehearsal:
