AMON AMARTH Announce Title Of Forthcoming Album, Set For Release Spring 2011

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Kings of Swedish death metal AMON AMARTH have just announced the title of the their forthcoming album as Surtur Rising. Due out in the spring of 2011, Surtur Rising marks the group’s eighth full-length studio release and undoubtedly one of 2011’s most anticipated albums by fans and critics alike. Surtur Rising is the follow-up to the highly acclaimed 2008 release, Twilight Of The Thunder God, which landed the #7 spot in Revolver Magazine’s Top 20 Albums of 2008 and what MetalSucks called “[a] bottomless gauntlet of riffs that the band endlessly takes gargantuan swigs from, sounding both lush and emotive as well as skull crushingly heavy… every goddamn one is a chest-beating anthem.” Outburn declared how Twilight Of The Thunder God “will render you nothing short of ecstatic” and Time Out New York noted that “AMON AMARTH plays some of the most unabashedly epic metal you’re likely to find these days.” Be sure to stay tuned to for more details on Surtur Rising.

WATAIN Announces NYC Meet And Greet;Lawless Darkness Earns The #2 Spot On Decibel Magazine’s Top 40 Albums of 2010!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Swedish black metal titans WATAIN have been setting North America ablaze with a sound and stage show that is a true assault to the senses.  Touring in support of their Lawless Darkness full-length released via Season Of Mist earlier this year, the wild ride commenced in Pittsburgh on November 6 and has been sweeping its way across the country with relentless fury.  Support bands, Goatwhore and Black Anvil, have helped make the tour package one of the most pummeling (and talked about) of the year.

Said WATAIN in a collective statement: “The Lawless Darkness Tour marches on relentlessly across the States. Greetings to the legions of hungry fiends that have come out so far, and to all of you who have brought us gifts and artifacts for the stage, you will not be forgotten! It has been a wild ride, yet it is far from over… Denial of the flesh; Denial of the cunt; we are the cold seed of Satanas!”

Check out footage from the band’s Seattle performance here:

WATAIN’s final U.S. performance of the tour will happen this Thursday at Santos Party House in New York City. Following the show is a scheduled meet and greet at Duff’s in Brooklyn.

Lawless Darkness was released via Season Of Mist on June 7. Recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt, etc.) in Alvik, Sweden with cover art by Zbigniew M. Bielak, the record continues to reap critical accolades from press nationwide and abroad. The band scored cover spots in some of metal’s most esteemed publications including Decibel, Terrorizer, and Subterranea (Metal Hammer’s extreme metal supplement) and the “Reaping Death,” single was certified gold in Sweden for sales in excess of 10,000 copies. In addition, Lawless Darkness recently earned the #2 position in Decibel Magazine’s Top 40 Albums Of 2010 [January 2011 issue].

“…From the opening strains of ‘Malfeitor,’ WATAIN held the Rickshaw rapt with Satanic attention. Their reputation preceding them, the band completely revel in malevolence and black theatrics, from coating themselves in pig’s blood to utilizing flame as the major light source onstage. Frontman Erik Danielsson’s grim ringmastery commands attention and respect, while the band scorches their way through the soundtrack to damnation.” — Hellbound

ARGUS Signs To Cruz Del Sur Music

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

CRUZ DEL SUR MUSIC have reached an agreement with Pennsylvania’s ARGUS for the release of their new album entitled Boldly Strides The Doomed.

ARGUS was formed in 2007 and features Bruce Balich of Penance fame on vocals. They released their self-titled debut album on Shadow Kingdom records in 2009, which was greeted warmly by the metal press immediately, Decibel Magazine describing ARGUS as “…a chest-thumping display of epic heavy metal as performed by a bunch of staunch doom metal fans. Indeed, ARGUS are all about big riffs, galloping anthems, dark melodies and tube amps.”

The recordings of Boldly Stride The Doomed will take place at Soundscape Studios in Pittsburgh. The initial tracking sessions are set to begin this week and will continue throughout December and January. The  master of heavy metal wizardry Dave Watson (Icarus Witch, Mantic Ritual, Crown The Lost) will be at the engineering and production helm once again. The album is set to contain approximately eight or nine songs, including track titles such as “A Curse On The World,” “The Ladder,” “42-7-29″ and “Durendal.” As said, “…strangers to the band who prefer their metal melodic, galloping and built on a classic doom foundation, consider ARGUS your call to arms…”

ARGUS will perform on the 16th of April 2011 at the Hammer Of Doom V Festival, the annual doom and epic metal appointment in Würzburg, Germany, where they’ll have the chance to perform with a cast of incredible bands such as Pentagram, While Heaven Wept, Atlantean Kodex, Solstice and many more.

Boldly Strides The Doomed will be released by CRUZ DEL SUR MUSIC simultaneously on CD, vinyl and digital form on the 3rd of May 2011.

THE WRETCHED END: New Track Streaming Via Decibel Magazine

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

THE WRETCHED ENDthe blackthrash trio featuring ex-Emperor/ex-Zyklon guitarist Samoth, Mindgrinder/ex-Scum guitarist Cosmo and ex-Dark Funeral/ex-Aeon drummer Nils Fjellström — recently unleashed their debut full-length, Ominous, via Candlelight Records.

In honor of its release, you can check out “The Armageddonist,” the third track off the debilitating outing, courtesy of Decibel Magazine HERE.

THE WRETCHED END formed in 2008 as a creative collaboration between Samoth and Cosmo, who previously worked together in deathpunk project Scum. In addition, Cosmo played bass with Zyklon when the band toured Europe 2001 with Morbid Angel. The two have long spoken about an extreme metal project and thus, THE WRETCHED END was born.

GRIFTEGÅRD: Three Tracks From Overlooked Full-Length Streaming Via Decibel Magazine

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Norrköping, Sweden doom metal goliaths GRIFTEGÅRD – vocalist Thomas Eriksson (Bokor), guitarist/lyricist Ola Blomkvist (Spetälsk, The Doomsday Cult), guitarist Per Broddesson (The Doomsday Cult, Wolverine etc.), bassist Thomas Jansson (Wolverine), and drummer Jens Gustafsson –  unleashed their debut full-length, Solemn-Sacred-Severe, in the US earlier this year via Van Records. Branded “a milestone” by Sweden Rock Magazine, who gave the record a much-deserved 9/10 rating upon its Euro release late last year, Solemn-Sacred-Severe was recorded and mixed during the first half of 2009 in Milk Studios, Norrköping, and produced by the band, with co-producer engineer/studio owner Magnus Jonsson. Arguably one of the genre’s most eclectic offerings this year, the riff heavy masterwork includes appearances from various friends of the band, all of whom added to the already multi-textured epic doom hymns.

If you somehow missed witnessing the inherent crush of this record upon its release, now’s your chance to check out three tracks — “Charles Taze Russell,” “I Refuse These Ashes,” and “Noah’s hands” (complete with commentary from Blomkvist) – courtesy of Decibel Magazine HERE.

Words from the already-converted:

“Goddamn, Candlemass move over because we’ll need a lot of room.” — Deaf Sparrow

“It’s essential that you own this album.” — Funeral Rain

“…they play a brand of traditional doom which is emotionally crushing one minute and almost soothing the next. For the most part they sound like Candlemass meets Memory Garden but they play at a pace closer to funeral doom bands. What makes them different is they are a religious band but not in the bible-pushing sense, they write emotionally charged tales and question the point of our very existence.” — Doommantia

“With just a wonderful blend of doom, atmospherics an a genuinely thought provoking narrative, Solemn. Sacred. Severe. has to be one of the most moving metal records I’ve heard in a long while.” — Popdose

“…the kind of album that doom fans would rejoice about if doom fans were the kind of people to rejoice.” — Metal Review

Feedback of previous EYEHATEGOD rituals:

The slow riffs of Bower, Brian Patton and relatively new bassist Gary Mader sounded as though they were literally being strummed beneath the surface of a murky Louisiana swamp, such was their slow and powerful delivery. At times an energized ’80s hardcore stomp sped things up and broke up what would have otherwise been an exercise in monotony. It was a thunderous, distinctly southern kind of blues ’n doom poured through a punk-rock filter.” — Hellbound

“Featuring founding members Mike Williams on vocals, Joey LaCaze on Drums, prominent long time guitarists Brian Patton and Jimmy ‘fucking’ Bower, and bassist Gary Mader, EHG simply rained down blow after blow upon us… For the record and in my humble opinion EYEHATEGOD are now the heaviest band on the face of the planet right behind the Melvins, and that was proven without a shadow of any doubt on this particular night….” — LPM Voice

“Wallowing in hatred and heeding one’s most destructive tendencies usually doesn’t bode well for longevity. For some reason it’s worked out — professionally at least — for EYEHATEGOD over the last twenty two years.” — Time Out Chicago

“One of the heaviest nights of my life.” — Crustcake

“A pit. I can’t even remember the last show I went to that had genuine pitting, but I guess when you specialize in the kind of nihilistic sludge malevolence EYEHATEGOD does, that kind of punk rock intensity coupled with addicted fuck-all, someone is bound to get punched in the face.” — The Obelisk

DEL REY Live Update And Interview Alert

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Chicagoan post-rock wizards DEL REY continue to book more area gigs, recently confirming a new upcoming headlining performance at Subterranean on December 9th. The band are slowly but surely booking more live shows as their family lives allow them to, and have just inked a booking partnership with Bunce Booking [Caspian, Irepress, Mose Giganticus, etc.] and have more widespread regional performances being planned now for the month of February and beyond. More info will be announced as it is confirmed.

In the meantime, DEL REY’s Eben English will be available for phone interviews for North American journalists this Tuesday November 23 from 12 – 2pm CST. Please get in touch right away to schedule a chat.

These ongoing live performances and interviews are in support of the band’s glorious fourth full-length Immemorial, which was released in late September via At A Loss Recordings in North America and Golden Antenna in Europe. The seven track opus crushes any preconceived notions of overdone post-rock repetition one might have, giving new life and growth to the over-saturated genre with their suave but punishing dual-drummer attack, intensely layered atmospheric qualities and an overall entrancing and potent output.

The entire Immemorial album still available for public streaming courtesy of At A Loss Recordings:

12/9/2010 Subterranean – Chicago, IL w/ Miracle Condition, Killer Moon

“Don Caballero and Slint are obvious touchstones, but the group’s hearty and hypnotic amalgam hews closer to Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky. Slow-burning guitars erupt into a detuned horde in the 11-minute opus “Return of the Son of Fog Rider.” Like a post-hardcore suite, the song drifts in and out of dynamic waves while two drummers work in tandem.” – Time Out Chicago

“The near-epic album seems to generate its own weather system as it swings between shorter, atmospheric passages like ‘Innumeracy,’ a two-minute breather as weightless and haunting as a passing apparition, and swirling monsters like ‘Return of the Son of Fog Rider,’ a densely-layered, 11-minute-plus storm surge of mechanical percussion and burnished guitar.” – Metromix Chicago

“When there’s no vocalist, folks tend to spend more time picking apart each instrument, its associated player. Longstanding Chi-Town quintet Del Rey solve that ‘problem’ with their signature two-drummer/double-kit builds and crashes and a denser, more atmospherically layered sound.” – Stereogum

“Prog heads will grasp onto the experimental elements, psychedelonauts will want to be dragged along the jamming peyote desert floor…” – The Obelisk

“…Del Ray blends a heavy and sonic brew of heavy psychedelic, Afro-Cuban and tribal rhythms, improvisational jams, and just about everything truly awesome into their vivid neo-psychedelic instrumental trips through audio bliss!” – Hellride Music

THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL Album Details Announced; Track Premiere Via Stereogum

Friday, November 19th, 2010

The upcoming fourth full-length release from the notorious UK act THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL, entitled The Murder of Jesus The Jew, is set for North American release via Candlelight Records on January 11, 2011, their first for the label. Continuing their notoriously bizarre integration of torrid black metal, infused with countless other styles, and the band’s unique style of theatrical storytelling, the madness runs rampant on the new album, sure to be one of the most talked about black metal releases of 2011.

Proof of this bizarre and intriguing genre-bending mastery can be witnessed today via a Stereogum premiere of THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL’s newly unleashed track “My Psychotic Sand Deity” HERE!

The Murder of Jesus The Jew Track Listing:

1. Boiled In Hell Broth And Grave Dust (Intro)
2. My Psychotic Sand Deity
3. Apocalypse Of Lazarus
4. Addicted To God
5. Stiller Of Tempests
6. Man From Kerioth
7. Dark Gethsemane
8. Jew Killer
9. Genesis Of Death
10. From Eagle To Cross
11. Apostle Of The Uncircumcised
12. A Canticle for the lost amputees of Aelia Capitolina who have been trampled under the iron shod hooves of salivating Hell Rams and impaled on the shimmering tusks of salvation within the abandoned tabernacle of a Bronze Age myth

After three well received demos in the late ’90s, the MEADS OF ASPHODEL signed to Supernal Music in 2000 and their debut album The Excommunication of Christ appeared in 2001. The narration/intro was voiced by AC Wild of cult Eighties Italian Black Metal band Bulldozer. Here began the bands long association with Hawkwind, as Huw Lloyd Langton played lead guitar on two tracks, including a cover of Hawkwind’s “Assault and Battery.” Whilst musically the MEADS veered away from the icy monotone fuzz blasts of what could be cited as traditional black metal, lyrically the band were, and ARE a black metal act. The second album, Exhuming the Grave of Yeshua, was released in 2003 and featured, Guest musicians, Huw Loyd Langton and Alan Davey (Hawkwind), Deorth (Ragnarok), Mirai (Sigh) and Paul; Carter (Thus Defiled). During 2004 and 2005 the band crafted the Damascus Steel album with input from Mirai (Sigh), Max Rael (History of Guns), and new associate, Alisa Coral from Russian Space rock band Space Mirrors. The album’s concept concerns the evil in human kind and the wanton slaughter in the name of God or whatever reason.

The brand new album The Murder of Jesus The Jew details the historical life of Jesus (Yeshua) the Jewish rabbi who was slaughtered on a tree by the Romans on a cold winters day 2000 years ago, and thereafter his people condemned to be pariahs of the earth due to Christian hatred. It is ironic that the Jewish roots of the Christian church have been erased and the blame of their man-god’s death cruelly placed upon a people already broken by the yoke of Roman imperialism. Truth is often blinded by faith, none more so than the story of Jesus and his maligned people.

+ + + + +

“The Meads of Asphodel have forged a path that can only be described as unorthodox, fusing together a multitude of genres flawlessly.” – Chronicles of Chaos

“…The Murder Of Jesus The Jew is the densest, shiniest, more stadium-sized work to date. Play it beside Cathedral’s The Guessing Game and A Forest Of Stars’s Opportunistic Thieves Of Spring for some truly bonkers UK heavy metal, circa 2010.” – Stereogum

“…more diverse than ever, with every track committing grave heresies against orthodox BM dogma, ranging from the jazzy vamping and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’-style piano led narrative chorus of ‘Addicted To God’ through the acoustic blues stomp and bongo break of  ’Stiller Of Tempests’ to the moody trip-hop beat of ‘Dark Gethsemane’.” – Terrorizer

“UK weirdo black metallers the Meads of Asphodel take the light-speed black metal, carnival music, female operatic vocals, and rock-god guitar solos of Sigh and Cradle of Filth a few steps further into the abyss… kudos for the awesome and absurd experimentation of it all.” – Snowboard Canada
