GRUESOME: New Grisly Video Clip From Schuldiner-Loving Collective Now Playing At Bloody Disgusting; Savage Land Out Now On Relapse Records

Friday, April 24th, 2015

Uniting members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation and Derketa, GRUESOME pays homage to death metal’s most celebrated founding American acts, Death. As such, their debut full-length, Savage Land, released earlier this week via Relapse Records, is a delightfully punishing display of late-‘80s/early-‘90s Florida-styled death metal that keeps the true sound and spirit of Chuck Schuldiner and Death alive.

In commemoration of its release, today Bloody Disgusting offers up the charmingly gore torn new video for the record’s title track. A deliciously cannibalistic wonder world of blood, barbarians and blatant brutality, the visual accompaniment to “Savage Land” is truly… gruesome.

Expels guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey, “The kind folks at Relapse put together a really cool clip video for the title track of the GRUESOME album. The video perfectly captures the violence and gore of the tune and takes me back to the early days of my teens when I devoured gore flicks and the first three Death albums with equal enthusiasm. This video is definitely not safe for work and not for the squeamish. Enjoy!”

Elaborates the carnage keepers at Bloody Disgusting: “The video uses footage from Umberto Lanzi’s 1980 cannibal film Eaten Alive! (Mangiati Vivi!) as well as Antonio Margheriti’s Cannibal Apocalypse, which also came out in 1980. As a result, this video is packed to the brim with gore, nudity, and violence. There’s people being torn apart, eyes gouged out, limbs being eaten, and that’s probably just grazing the surface. If you’re at work, I recommend waiting until the coast is clear before pressing play on this one!

Savor the savagery at THIS LOCATION.

You can also check out a track-by-track play-by-play as explained by Harvey at Decibel Magazine HERE.

GRUESOME was borne out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and drummer Gus Rios’ (Malevolent Creation) mutual involvement with the Death To All tours. After discarding the idea of putting together another incarnation of DTA to focus exclusively on Death’s first two albums, Harvey half-jokingly suggested writing their own songs in that vein. The idea gained traction, and the band had five songs written. Rios later recruited Possessed guitarist Daniel Gonzalez and Derketa bassist Robin Mazen to record the material in Florida. Savage Land was tracked by Rios and Gonzalez at Riversound Studios in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, mixed by Jarrett Pritchard at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida, and features a guest guitar solo on “Closed Casket” by James Murphy as well as cover art by legendary illustrator Ed Repka (Death, Megadeth, Massacre, Athiest et el).

Savage Land is out now via Relapse Records on CD, LP and all digital outlets. Physical orders are available now at THIS LOCATION, and digital orders HERE.

“This couldn’t come more highly recommended. Buy this and take a trip back to the ‘80s when death metal wasn’t all about blast beats and gutturals.” – Stereokiller

“This isn’t your crusty, nasty, run-of-the-mill retro death metal. Hell no. This the advanced, dripping-rot-from-the-corners-of-a-coffin, putrid, vile death metal throwback that you’ve been waiting for. Observe.” – Metal Injection

“From this nod to the past comes a fertile energy that raises the excitement levels of the music. Each song is charged up, never falling victim to parody… It’s an ode to a time in death metal where there were no guidelines or strict formula to work from. It was evolving into something nobody could predict, and this album fits right into that time period effortlessly. 4/5 ” –

“The enthusiasm alone on Savage Land is awe-inspiring… this is a fun romp through the rehearsal space of a bunch of longhairs who love a band so much it hurts. 8/10” – Exclaim

“Metal needs more albums like Savage Land… The legacy and sound of Death lives on ever so faithfully through bands like Gruesome, and wherever he is, Chuck Schuldiner is undoubtedly windmilling ferociously and smirking ear to ear at the deathly sounds of Savage Land. 4/5” – HeavyBlogIsHeavy

“A clear-cut case of a band that is passionate about doing what they do, as opposed to jumping on the bandwagon and putting out a disc of half-hearted junk. GRUESOME is the real deal, and should be an easy sell to all of those Death (and old school DM) fans out there.4/5” – Dead Rhetoric

“Death metal can be a lot of things—technically impressive, sonically abusive, completely impenetrable—but rarely is it this much fun. If you’re a fan of Leprosy-era Death, or just want more solos and breakdowns than you can shake a dismembered limb at, then this beast, now streaming at Decibel, is yours for adoption.” – Free Williamsburg

“This band reinvents old school death metal in the way that its vulgar atmosphere is unmatched. This is one of the few bands combining lurid melodies that bash violently with technical composition, creating the formula for the ultimate death metal sound. 2015 has so far laid down its most annihilating album. 5/5” – The Age Of Metal

SOREPTION: Play-Through Clip From Swedish Death Metal Faction Playing At Gear Gods; US Tour With Cryptopsy, Disgorge And More Draws Near

Friday, April 24th, 2015

Today, Swedish technical death metal faction, SORPEPTION, hurls forth a blazing play-through video for the track “A Speach To Survival.” The tune comes by way of the band’s Engineering The Void full-length, released last year via Unique Leader Records. A scrupulously-executed display of methodical genius, Engineering The Void spouts a wholly sophisticated barrage of Meshuggian riff sequences, obscure time signatures, head-jarring rhythms, and intervals of orchestral enormity all backed by the calloused growls of lead throat Fredrik Söderberg.

Notes Gear Gods simply: “The note density is so high that if I add even a few more words the internet will collapse in on itself.”

Get viewing at THIS LOCATION.

The clip comes in conjunction with the band’s impending US live overthrow supporting Canadian death metal icons, Cryptopsy and US death metallers, Disgorge. The Metal Injection-sponsored stretch of shows will stomp through eighteen cities from May 14th through May 31st. Additional support will come from Canadian black metal unit, Erimha and Ohio death metallers, The Convalescence.

“…an example of tech-death guitar work at its finest.” – No Clean Singing

“..the horn-o’-plenty of riffdom smashed onto this album will be irresistible.” – Last Rites

“These dudes play seriously gnarly technical death metal to the level where you might need a physics degree just to headbang to it. You can hear them constructing the framework of the abyss as Engineering The Void runs its course, culminating in the title track – at which point they push the button and the whole thing implodes. For a band on their second full-length, they’ve figured this sound out pretty well.” – Decibel

The Swedes in SOREPTION are up there with Obscura, Gorod and Psycroptic at the upper echelon of the crowded tech-death pack, no doubt.” – MetalSucks

“This album came out at me like a fist through the wall, but it was indeed the first of some cybernetic android from the future that sought to teach me all of the universes’ hidden secrets. And that’s exactly what the album feels like… a highly calculated and whimsically wizened fist.” – New Noise Magazine

“…mechanical precision and jaw-dropping chops still have their place in death metal. These are messy times, but they’re futuristically so. Metal fans are far more likely to battle information overload on a daily basis than they are to fight monsters or serial killers. Sweden’s SOREPTION provide a compelling soundtrack for the daily grind.” – Invisible Oranges

AUTHOR & PUNISHER: One-Man Industrial Doom Unit To Kick Off US Tour; Trek Includes Stop At Stump Fest + Psycho California

Friday, April 24th, 2015

Following a recent march through Europe alongside Atari Teenage Riot, one-man industrial doom sorcerer, Tristan Shone, more commonly known as AUTHOR & PUNISHER, will quake the stages of sixteen North American cities with his tectonic-shifting sound conjurings. Slated to embark today in Portland, Oregon at Stumpfest, Shone’s latest live incursion concludes with a stop at Psycho California Fest and serves as a precursor to the release of AUTHOR & PUNISHER’s new full-length. The as-yet-untitled long player, and first for Housecore Records, was captured at famed Nodferatu’s Lair in North Shore, Louisiana with label-founder Philip H. Anselmo and follows the critically-adored Women & Children full-length, released in 2013 via Seventh Rule Recordings and currently available in a color vinyl configuration mirroring the AUTHOR & PUNISHER crest colors of yellow and black limited to 100 copies at THIS LOCATION.

5/16/2015 Psycho California 2015 – Santa Ana, CA
5/17/2015 Psycho California 2015 – Santa Ana, CA

Shone’s fabrication and industrial environment and processes reveal emotions, anxieties, and elements of bliss inherent to the specific human/machine choreography. All aspects of AUTHOR & PUNISHER’s sound begins with physical movement, limbs struggling in unison to coordinate a wall of electronic rhythm and oscillation, ultimately conditioned by an organic and loose quality absent of sequencing and plastic perfection. AUTHOR & PUNISHER performances are a true amalgamation between man and mechanisms. They are direct, physical, heavy experiences that have amassed praise and intrigue from a wide array of audiences. Pitchfork styled him, “immediate but mysterious,” Stereogum described his, “chilling, unrecognizable form,” and NPR hails him as, “a thrill [who] fires on all cylinders.”

WOODEN STAKE: Occult Death Doom Duo Releases Second Full-Length Via Razorback Records

Thursday, April 23rd, 2015

Occult death doom ensemble, WOODEN STAKE, rises from their moldy tomb armed with their long-awaited second long player, A Feast Of Virgin Souls. Out now on Razorback Records, the ten-track offering boasts over forty demonic minutes of dark, NWOBHM-infused tracks of lurching brutality led by the possessed banshee vocals of vocalist/bassist Vanessa Nocera. A concept offering influenced by the legend of serial-killer countess Elizabeth Bathory and 1871 Gothic novella Carmilla by Joseph Steridan Le Fan, A Feast Of Virgin Souls is at once punishing and alluring and includes the stunning cover creation of underground art maestro, Mario Lopez (Agitator, Possessor, Warstorm et al).

Taste the torment at THIS LOCATION.

A Feast Of Virgin Souls Track Listing:
1. Dead Winter Resurrection
2. Rise From The Bleeding Coffin
3. A Feast Of Virgin Souls
4. Alzbeta: The Devil’s Bitch
5. Cross-Scalded Flesh
6. Exorcising The Possessed
7. Dragged Through The Rotted Catacombs
8. Hanging From The Inverted Cross
9. 1140 Rue Royale
10. Curse Of The Cauldron Countess

WOODEN STAKE emerged in 2010 with the release of their Vampire Plague Exorcism demo which earned the critical exaltation of the underground extreme doom metal scene. A tidal wave of seven-inch releases, including a split with Druid Lord in 2011 (Altsphere Production) and Blizaro (Razorback Records) the same year, would ensue. WOODEN STAKE undraped their debut full-length, Dungeon Prayers & Tombyard Serenades, later that year via Razorback and again reaped critical acclaim from underground metallers globally, including Darkthrone’s Fenriz who chose WOODEN STAKE as his Band Of The Month. The album received thousands of plays on YouTube and spread like plague to those who craved extreme doom/death metal with a simultaneously melodic and violent edge. Blabbermouth hailed, “The combination of [former guitarist/drummer] Sarantopoulos’ mighty, dread-spreading riffs and Nocera’s macabre tales and behemoth bass lines constitute a big reason why Dungeon Prayers & Tombyard Serenades is such a compelling release,” while American Aftermath noted, “the music is fuzzy and droning, and the atmosphere sends a cool chill down your spine, but there is something about this band that makes even the most morbid songs seem nice and soothing.”  Added Cvlt Nation, “the band is incredibly atmospheric and have managed to carve out their own unique style that blends everything from Black Sabbath to Obituary to Hellhammer to Jex Thoth to Electric Wizard,” furthering, “The spoken word vocal approach pushes you into a surreal state of melancholy which doesn’t last long as it is soon destroyed by some earth-shattering, old-school riffage and hypnotic gloomy atmosphere.”

In 2012, WOODEN STAKE unleashed At The Stroke Of Midnight, a collection of demo and EP material as well as exclusive canticle, “Night Of The Banshee,” recorded specifically for the release. The next two years saw Nocera busy with two of her two other projects, Skeletal Spectre and Howling. In 2015, WOODEN STAKE returns with the witchy wisdom of A Feast Of Virgin Souls. Featuring Nocera alongside new guitar player and drummer, Willie Wardlaw, the record is out now on Razorback Records with a future vinyl version on the horizon. Further WOODEN STAKE developments, including live ceremonies, to be announced in the coming weeks. Until then, suffer.

KING PARROT: Australian Thrash Grind Behemoths Unleash First Of Five-Part Interview Series Via Skulls ‘N’ Bones; Dead Set Release Day Draws Near

Thursday, April 23rd, 2015

Fresh off an epically successful US journey supporting bong-wielding metal legion, Weedeater, Australia’s favorite thrash grind behemoths, KING PARROT, will drop the maniacal wares of their Dead Set long player upon the masses next month.

Captured by Philip H. Anselmo and Michael Thompson with Steve Berrigan at the infamous Nodferatu’s Lair (Down, Eyehategod, Superjoint Ritual et al) in Louisiana, Dead Set touts ten grind-laden, punk-infused odes of fuck-all audio savagery. A true leap forward from their debut, Dead Set exhibits a distinct maturity from a band who’s committed to the rigors of international touring, slaying audiences through Asia, North America, Europe and Australia on a regular basis. In an early impression of the record, PureGrainAudio offers, “Unstoppably relentless from the get-go, Dead Set is a ferocious album to listen to with the punk sneer of ‘Like A Rat’ sounding like, for want of a better description, Cancer Bats bastardizing the ’80s Bay Area thrash scene. Elsewhere Dead Set is just rammed full of stomping, grinding, raging thrash. None of that retro-thrash shit; this is just heads down, fuck-you thrashing insanity.” While The Metal Den commends, “ten brutally dark and rampaging cuts,” further gushing, “What I love is that the full fuckin’ throttle momentum does not slow down one bit whatsoever and the last batch of tracks — ‘Sick In The Head,’ ‘Punisher,’ and ‘Reject’ — will have you straight up cheering for these dudes… Any fan of punk and metal music will definitely want to add this one to their collection, because this group is fuckin bad ass.”

As a precursor to Dead Set’s official descent, today the dedicated PARROT enthusiasts at Skulls ‘N’ Bones offer up the first of a five-part interview series that gives fans a comprehensive glimpse into the band’s relentless world of  writing, recording and touring as well as other fowl-related  shenanigans.

Check it out HERE where you can also sample the band’s “Like A Rat,” video, shot at the Anselmo compound and featuring a cameo appearance by the legendary frontman.

Dead Set will infiltrate North America on May 19th via Housecore Records. Digital preorders are now available via iTunes at THIS LOCATION. Physical preorder bundles are available HERE.

IDES OF GEMINI: Ethereal Dream-Weavers Undrape New Hymn At Cvlt Nation

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

Today, IDES OF GEMINI, in cooperation with the sound sergeants at Cvlt Nation, are pleased to undrape the shimmering sounds of “Carthage.” The trio’s latest hymn comes by way of a two-song seven-inch featuring “Carthage” and a stunning cover of Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” released via Magic Bullet Records this past weekend in commemoration of Record Store Day.

The lingering tones of “Carthage” inhabit Side A. Commencing with a doomy, acoustic summoning of the spirits of a barren world,  the band goes full tilt into their eclectic brand of overdriven power and command, charging onward and upward through forest and sky, dragging the doomed, sorrowful carcass of humanity itself into light. Written and recorded during Old World New Wave (Neurot/Sige) sessions, the track offers another brilliant moment in the band’s beautifully evolving sound.

Issues Cvlt Nation: “‘Carthage’ feels like I am journeying into another dimension of time; the pounding beat laying the foundation for the haunting vocals and sweeping riffs. What leads this song more than anything is Sera Timms, sounding more powerful than ever. You know when you watch Vikings and you secretly wish you could be in their world? Well, Timms’ voice against Kelly Johnston-Gibson’s rhythmic drums make me imagine I’m a jarl about to lead my band on a Viking in Saxon territory.”

Take in the audio alchemy of “Carthage,” courtesy of Cvlt Nation at THIS LOCATION.

The Carthage/Strange Fruit seven-inch is currently available on limited black wax or clear wax HERE. Desirers of the digitals visit Magic Bullet’s BandCamp page HERE or iTunes HERE.

The IDES deliver ominous, haunting music, perfect for séances, witches covens, and backyard barbecues with the neighbourhood Goths – think Siouxsie & The Banshees (ca.Join Hands) – meets Dead Can Dance.” –

CONTINUUM: New Performance Play-Through Video From California Technical Death Engineers Playing At Gear Gods; The Hypothesis Out NOW On Unique Leader

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

A true monolith of progressive technical death metal, The Hypothesis, the new studio offering from Bay Area metallers, CONTINUUM, was unleashed yesterday via Unique Leader Records. Captured predominantly by lead guitarist/composer Chase Fraser (Decrepit Birth, Animosity), with additional tracking and mixing by Zack Ohren (Suffocation, Fallujah, All Shall Perish et al.) at Castle Ultimate Studios, the ten-track The Hypothesis boasts a scathing assemblage of engaging, abrasive, surgically precise and unrepentantly violent compositions based conceptually on the mysteries of the infinite and the unsolved theories of the “continuum hypothesis,” a premise studied by a number of mathematicians, many of whom committed suicide before reaching a conclusion to the unfathomable question of infinity.

Gushes the Metal Observer of the release, “Bolstered by a pristine production and show-stopping detail, CONTINUUM’s The Hypothesis is a staggeringly well-executed display of full-throttle, procedural brutality. …for those of us who connect, plug in, and enjoy getting lost in such an aesthetic brainfuck, rest assured that this Bay Area singularity has created one of the most impressive tech-death albums of the year.” Adds Aural Delights, “A primer in progressive technical death metal, insane polyrhythmic drumming, manic riffing, scabrous dual vocalizing and other-worldly lead guitar runs this is one for lovers of the genre. Highly recommended!”

In celebration of its release, today Gear Gods hurls forth the band’s latest performance play-though video for sixth movement, Wasps In The History Of The Weak.”

Scroll on over to Gear Gods at THIS LOCATION and see what the fuss is about.

And if you missed it, you can sample the lyric video for ninth cut,A Surreal Descent” still streaming at Decibel at THIS LOCATION.

Forged in 2009, CONTINUUM features the current working lineup of Fraser alongside guitarist Ivan Munguia (Arkaik, Deeds Of Flesh), vocalist Riley McShane (Son Of Aurelius), bassist Nick Willbrand (Flesh Consumed) and drummer Spencer Edwards (Son Of Aurelius). Together, the CONTINUUM collective provides a sound that rocks the very foundation of modern death metal.

The Hypothesis is out NOW via Unique Leader Records. Order yours today HERE.

Today, Revolver Magazine offers up the video accompaniment to the track “We Are Damnation,” from occult death rock/folk metal dealers, ANCIENT VVISDOM. The infectious hymn comes by way of the band’s Sacrificial long player, released last year via Magic Bullet Records.

The haunting, silent-film-styled clip was captured by Edmonton-based illustrator, Richard Lukacs, and truly brings to life the inner demons of band leader, Nathan Opposition who offers, “An ancient cult delivered this to me as an offering to the end of the world. We call upon the forces of evil and release this plague unto you.”

Enter damnation, courtesy of Revolver Magazine, at THIS LOCATION.

The video premiere comes in conjunction with ANCIENT VVISDOM’s North American tour supporting atmospheric Icelandic metallers, Sólstafir. The ceremonies commence tomorrow, April 22nd, in Brooklyn and will blanket twenty-five cities, the journey coming to a close on May 20th in Richmond.

ANCIENT VVISDOM will be touting psalms from their Sacrificial full-length. Produced by founding vocalist Opposition, engineered by Travis Bonner at The Diamond Factory Studios in Austin and mastered by Paul Logus (Anthrax, Clutch, Hellyeah, Shadows Fall et al) at Taloowa Mastering, Sacrificial finds the collective at once melodic and catchy conjuring dark, penetrating neofolkian hymns of iniquity. Thematically, Sacrificial delves further into Opposition’s personal ascent into the unanticipated enlightenment of exploring humanity’s universal darkness. Whereas traditional lore dealing with the occult, paganism, and Satan himself tends to be heavy-handed (and often synonymous with a proverbial descent away from any sort of positive self-affirmation), Sacrificial spins a slant wherein “down” becomes “up.” In Opposition’s world, confronting one’s own demons and humanity’s primordial penchant toward chaos and destructive ritual will ultimately pass each seeker through a threshold unto which deeper knowledge, sage wisdom, and self-realization envelop one’s consciousness. ANCIENT VVISDOM’s Sacrificial is out now on Magic Bullet Records. Order yours today at THIS LOCATION.

“…more effective than a hex.” — This Is Not A Scene

“…an odd mixture of pop sensibilities and occult lyrics that will not fade from memory any time soon,” — The Sludgelord

“With strong riffs, a great mix and catchy vocal melodies, Sacrificial would have the Devil himself tapping away to the odd track.” – Ghost Cult

“…a revolutionary step for ANCIENT VVISDOM, and a welcome one for their metal-loving listeners.” – Metal Reviews

FULGORA: Grindcore/Death Supergroup To Perform First Show With Sparky Voyles Next Month In Brooklyn

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015

Grindcore/death miscreants, FULGORA, who unite members of Pig Destroyer, Misery Index and Agoraphobic Nosebleed, are pleased to welcome guitarist Sparky Voyles (Dying Fetus, Misery Index etc.) to their diseased ranks with an inaugural show at the Acheron in Brooklyn, New York next month!

FULGORA will be sullying ears with the concussion-inducing, audio violence of their Stratagem full-length, released last month via Housecore Records. A punishing assortment of limited vinyl singles and samples, Stratagem takes the searing, audio demolition of their collective pedigrees to new realms of sonic abuse. Securing widespread exaltation from fans and critics globally, MetalSucks warns, “Their music has been scientifically proven to cause an overwhelming desire to cut one’s own face off and feed it to dogs.” Last Rites proclaims, “Strategem is the truth. It’s an unfairly hook-y punch to the gut operating under the guise of being too short, when it’s actually a calculated laser-blast of death metal efficiency that every band on the face of the planet should take notes on,” while HeadbangorGTFO notes, “Stratagem is chunky, it’s raw and you will definitely bang your fucking head to this.” “FULGORA skews far more to the modern hardcore and crossover thrash side of metal,” adds Houston Press, “[Guitarist/vocalist B.L.] LaMew’s vocals are not screamed or squealed, but rather shouted. But never fear; FULGORA still serves up quite a helping of jagged time changes and math-metal riffage. These guys probably couldn’t write a completely straightforward song if they tried to.”

In addition to their Acheron takedown, FULGORA will terrorize the Maryland Deathfest as well as Full Terror Assault in Cave-In-Rock, Illinois in September with supplementary live abrasions being conspired. In the meantime, check out Strategem, still streaming in all its mutinous glory at Decibel Magazine at THIS LOCATION. And if you missed it, watch the visual companion to the track “Meridian,” playing at Metal Injection at THIS LOCATION.
