BRAINOIL: Tankcrimes Issues Death Of This Dry Season Sophomore Album On CD

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Bay Area-operated Tankcrimes offers up another offering from the label’s hometown sludge heroes, BRAINOIL, with the first-ever CD release of the band’s decimating Death Of This Dry Season album.

Initially released on vinyl and digital platforms in the Summer of 2011 via 20 Buck Spin, Death Of This Dry Season put BRAINOIL on the map well beyond what their 2003-released self-titled debut album on Life Is Abuse had, taking the band’s scathing, wretched brew of Bay Area-style doom/sludge to new heights over seven face-crushing anthems. The band’s very “Oakland-sounding” destructive sludge rips with up-tempo crust-inspired breaks and monstrously baked breakdowns aptly suited for fans of other area acts Black Cobra, Dystopia, Noothgrush, Stormcrow, El Dopa and more.

Having been completely remastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon (Sleep, High On Fire, Tragedy), the Tankcrimes CD version of Death Of This Dry Season is out now. Stream it HERE. Buy it HERE.

BATTLECROSS Confirms Winter Warriors Headlining Tour Honoring America’s Veterans

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Following their originally scheduled support slot on the recently cancelled Machine Head tour, Detroit, Michigan’s BATTLECROSS will be heading back out on the road next month for more than two dozen headlining dates through North America. Dubbed the Winter Warriors tour, the trek will kick off on November 26th in Grand Rapids, Michigan and conclude on December 30th in Worcester, Massachusetts. Support will come from Wretched and War Of Ages.

In honor of the US Armed Forces, this Veterans Day BATTLECROSS will make a limited number of tickets available to VET TIX so that local members of the military may attend a show in their city at no cost. The band will also be donating a portion of the funds generated from sales of a limited edition tour shirt to a local veteran’s charity, and choose a veteran in each market for a VIP experience. On Veteran’s Day (November 11th) fans can nominate a friend or family member who has served our country and share their story and photo, with a member of the military being chosen to win a guitar and more at the end of the tour. On the same day, the band will also bring back merchandise from their first Metal Blade album, Pursuit Of Honor, in their official merch store, with a portion of the proceeds being set aside to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project, a veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services  and events to wounded veterans of the military following the events of September 11th, 2001.

To learn more about honoring a veteran through the tour or to help underwrite tickets for veterans, click HERE. Members of the military can inquire about free admission to the tour at www.vettix.org.

Guitarist Hiran Deraniyagala adds: “We won’t let a cancelled tour stop BATTLECROSS from performing for our fans and the Winter Warriors Tour with Wretched and War Of Ages is the perfect way to remind our fans that you keep moving forward when challenges come up in life. Who knows perseverance more than those who bravely serve our country and we are honored to dedicate this tour to them. We are a band that stands for ideals such as loyalty, honor, sacrifice and perseverance through our lyrics and how we conduct ourselves, and hope the tour will be a fitting tribute to every service member who attends. We look forward to raging with our fans who serve or have served in the US Armed Forces and thank them again for their service.”

PRIMORDIAL: Dublin Metal Troupe Unveils New Tune At Stereogum; Where Greater Men Have Fallen To See Release Next Month

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

Today Stereogum hosts the official unveiling of “Come The Flood,” the new hymn from Dublin metal troupe, PRIMORDIAL. The stirring tune appears as the third track on the band’s long-anticipated Where Greater Men Have Fallen full-length, set for release via Metal Blade Records this November.

Praised by Pitchfork for their fastidiously composed “folk and black metal-inflected classic metal that spirals and extends and, somehow, keeps getting bigger,“ Where Greater Men Have Fallen serves as the follow-up to PRIMORDIAL’s globally adored, 2011-released Redemption At The Puritan’s Hand long player and their eighth studio offering overall. An eight track, fifty-eight minute magnum opus, Where Greater Men Have Fallen was recorded at Grouse Lodge in Dublin with Jaime Gomez (Cathedral, Angelwitch, Grave Miasma) and delivers some of the band’s deepest, most methodically arranged, thematically profound and plainly gripping compositions of their winding catalog of sonic enormity.

Gushes Stereogum of “Come The Flood,” “Frontman Alan Averill (aka A.A. Nemtheanga) is a firebrand, channeling a mythic vision of humanity’s pain through a personal lens of frustration, resulting in a swaggering, staggering bellow that would sound absurd out of context, but instead comes off absurdly powerful. It’s pure theater, but closer to Macbeth than anything else. ‘Come The Flood’ is the second single off Where Greater Men Have Fallen, following the crushing title track, which came out a couple weeks back. “Come The Flood” takes a different tack, lacing jangling minor-key guitars and spoken word throughout its 7-minute runtime before exploding in the second half, embodying the biblical fire and cathartic rain it describes with sonic force. Like the first single, the results are beyond what we’ve come to expect from … anything, really.”

Experience the near-eight-minute epic “Come The Flood” HERE.

Where Greater Men Have Fallen will be released on November 25th, 2014 via Metal Blade Records. Visit http://www.metalblade.com/primordial where you’ll find a lyric video for the title track as well as a gaggle of preorder options. The record will come available on CD and on vinyl in various color variants.

Additionally, Where Greater Men Have Fallen will be released in a limited European deluxe edition wood boxset which includes a CD+DVD digibook, an exclusive 7”, a leather wristband, a poster and a certificate of authenticity.

ATRIARCH: Pitchfork Streams New LP From Death/Doom Alchemists In Its Entirety

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

With the release of An Unending Pathway, the haunting new long player from Pacific Northwest atmospheric death/doom alchemists, ATRIARCH, now less than a week away, today Pitchfork is streaming the record in its entirety.

Tracked at Type Foundry in Portland, Oregon, produced by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, Melvins et al) and the band, engineered and mixed by Anderson at Everything Hz, also in Portland, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Beastmilk, Nails) at Audiosiege, An Unending Pathway boasts seven cataclysmic soundscapes made of  cryptic atmospheres and droning floods of ritualistic sludge. Offering true purification through sonic ritual, ATRIARCH’s third full-length fuses all the prime tenets of death rock, doom, black metal, post punk and psychedelic drone/noise, into something that is at once tempting and petrifying.

Cvlt Nation applauds the outfit’s, “arresting and welcome combination of doom metal, death rock, black metal, and Mid Eastern-influenced darkwave sound,” Noisey notes, “There’s a lurching, ritualistic feel to the proceedings, and a dire hopelessness in the vocals that doesn’t let up for a moment. It’s death rock that ODs on death… The end result is as dark and eerily atmospheric as an abandoned graveyard at midnight,” while Sea Of Tranquility commends, “An Unending Pathway is so out there at times that it’s almost puzzling. For some, this melting pot of sounds, mixed with the frightening tone of much of the album, is going to be very unsettling….” Elsewhere the sentiment echoes. In a 4/5 rating, Metal Riot elaborates, “‘Collapse’ breathes with terrific shifting drums Moonspell or The Cult fans could appreciate equally. There is a deranged charm to the vocal and unity in this song that owns the feeling coveted. Marching drums ring in ‘Revenant,’ a more interesting song that bridges military black metal and noise rock influences with some tortured screams before drooping into a death shuffle. The patience of the slow bass line and sustained notes paired with sudden bursts of black metal drumming is worth the whole record alone.” Adds Metal Storm in an 8.5/10 score, “If the third album of a band’s discography is typically held as the ‘make it or break it.’ point, these guys not only break through the wall, they pummel it into dust.”

Experience An Unending Pathway in full courtesy of Pitchfork at THIS LOCATION.

ATRIARCH will bring their audio extractions to the stage this November on a West Coast run of live rituals. Scheduled to commence November 7th in Seattle, the band will traumatize thirteen cities through November 21st with an included record release show with labelmates Usnea. See confirmed shows below.

BARING TEETH: Sophomore Album From Texas Experimental Death Metal Unit To See November Release Via Willowtip Records; Teaser Track Posted

Monday, October 20th, 2014

Dallas, Texas-based avant/tech death metal trio, BARING TEETH, is preparing for the long-awaited follow-up to their 2011 debut album, Atrophy, with the mangling Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins confirmed to drop via Willowtip Records in late November.

Previously known as Soviet, BARING TEETH is an act formed by three musicians having collectively spent time playing in a plethora of acts including Cleric, Between The Buried And Me, Broadcast Sea and others. Following their initial demo, Willowtip signed the band for the 2011 release of their debut album, Atrophy. Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins shows BARING TEETH sharpening its attack, the unsettled aggression of previous material heightened to a manic, primal belligerence. Immersive, hypnotic, and haunting, the album melds seemingly opposing characteristics — streamlined songwriting and dizzying technicality, ambience and brute force, density and angularity, order and chaos — into a fully realized, cohesive listening experience. Without sacrificing originality, the groundwork of Meshuggah and Gorguts gives in to modern and gritty dissonance where one may at times be reminded of everything from the technical intensity of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Flourishing, to the ominous realms of Deathspell Omega and Ulcerate. Comparative compliments aside, the band’s music continually applies and releases tension, while continually spiraling into a tension-infused amalgamation of chaotic but ultimately natural and captivating experimental death metal.

Recorded by Alex Bhore (This Will Destroy You) at Elmwood Recording, mixed by Keith Souza and Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets (The Body, Battles, Daughters), and mastered by Alan Douches (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Swans), Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins takes the extremes of BARING TEETH’s debut to new levels while showcasing a singular vision: no compromise, no respite.

Willowtip Records will release Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins on November 25th. For now, the album’s cover art by Calvin Sprague and preorders are posted RIGHT HERE. You can also sample “Mountain” at the Willowtip BandCamp page HERE.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER: Seventh Rule Releases Seminal Drone Machines Full-Length On Limited Edition Double LP

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Seventh Rule Recordings is very pleased to issue AUTHOR & PUNISHER’s Drone Machines as a double LP. Initially released in 2010, Drone Machines stands among AUTHOR & PUNISHER’s heaviest outputs to date. Available for the first time ever on wax, the vinyl edition is beautifully packaged in a heavy gatefold and comes in two color variants: a limited edition/mailorder only version (limited to 100 copies) with LP 1 on silver with black and goldsplatter and LP 2 on silver with black and swamp green splatter or standard high fidelity black vinyl. Both versions come accompanied by a download card for the digitally astute.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER is an industrial doom metal, one-man project featuring Tristan Shone who employs primarily custom designed and fabricated machines and speakers he encounters through engineering work and sound machine fabrication. The fabrication and industrial environment and processes reveal emotions, anxieties, and elements of bliss inherent to the specific human/machine choreography. This interaction involves a certain level of continuous intimacy with material and mechanical motion, where a bond is formed enabling an honest incorporation into a sound device and performance; the core of AUTHOR & PUNISHER. What started out as the design of his Master’s thesis at the University of California, San Diego, the drone machines soon become the subject matter of Shone’s crushing seventy-minute third opus, fitting dubbed Drone Machines.

In related news, Shone will bring his cacophonous manifestations streets again this weekend waging his punishing sonic decompositions upon Southwest Terror Fest attendees in Tucson. Next week Shone will appear at Philip H. Anselmo’s Housecore Horror Film Fest in Austin with future enactments in December in their plotting stages.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER:
10/18/2014 Southwest Terror Fest – Tucson, AZ w/ Neurosis, The Body, Sunn O))), Goatsnake, more…
10/23-10/26 Housecore Horror Film Fest – Austin, TX w/ Neurosis, Eyehategod, Corrections House, Cattle Decapitation, more

Order Drone Machines TODAY via Seventh Rule at THIS LOCATION.

“The swirling, almost psychedelic effect this produces stands juxtaposed to the pounding, clanking riffs that keep time on this album, like the relentless march of a Terminator army and feel as bleak and post-apocalyptic as a William Gibson novel…” – The Sleeping Shaman

HIDEOUS DIVINITY: Italian Death Metal Goliaths Stream Cobra Verde Title Track Via GunShyAssassin

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Italian death metal juggernauts, HIDEOUS DIVINITY, are pleased to unveil the title track of their forthcoming crushing new full-length, Cobre Verde,

Fitting tagged “an uber-brutal, churning platter of tech-y death metal” by Decibel Magazine, Cobre Verde is scheduled to drop via Unique Leader Records. Based around Werner Herzog’s 1987 film of the same name, Cobra Verde was recorded at 16th Cellar Studios (Hour Of Penance, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Vomit The Soul) and supplies nine tracks of hate, discontent and unrelenting audio brutality including a guest vocal appearances by Nile’s Dallas Toler-Wade on “The Alonest Of The Alone” and a searing rendition of Ripping Corpse’s “The Last And Only Son.”

Elaborates band leader/Hour Of Penance founder Enrico Schettino: “Sometimes a riff takes ages to reveal itself, some other times you’re a lucky bastard and the whole song comes out, like magic. ‘Cobra Verde’ belongs to the second category. Title-tracks are not ordinary songs; when you decide there’ll be a title track, you accept the challenge of creating, in the space of a few minutes, something that would represent the mood of an entire album. As for ‘Cobra Verde,’ it had to be something beyond death metal. For this exact reason it’s undeniable I was highly influenced by the latest Ulcerate and Gorguts. It was time to push the envelope for HIDEOUS DIVINITY and that was the aim of the song. The whole composition wavers between storm and calm, nuclear rage assaults and tormented doom litanies. The twisted, samba-like rhythm pattern sees the rebirth of cruel kings and madmen, slave prayers and curses through six minutes of song. Atonal arpeggios create that feeling of rage ready to explode and to be drowned in solitude afterwards. We are alone on this world, so huge yet so narrow, and our thirst is condemned never to be quenched. Like the spirit of Manoel, the white devil condemned to solitude, the ghost that will never see the snow.”

Brutality awaits. Check out “Cobre Verda” now playing at GunShyAssassin HERE.

Additionally you can still piss off your neighbors with “The Alonest Of The Alone,” now playing at Metal Insider at THIS LOCATION as well as “Sinister And Demented,” at Decibel Magazine at THIS LOCATION.

Born between Italy and Norway in late 2006 as a side project of Hour Of Penance founder Enrico Schettino, HIDEOUS DIVINITY immediately earned underground accolades thanks to their mauling 2007 Sinful Star Necrolatry two-track demo. It wasn’t until 2010 however that the band, with their first stable lineup, would perform live alongside longstanding comrades, Insision. In the interim, new songs were composed with their European death/black influences giving way to a more mindful, complex yet straight-in-your-face death metal assault in the vein Nile, Immolation and Hate: the embryo of their first full-length release. Following another successful appearance in Scandinavia at the end of April 2012, this time for the prestigious Inferno Festival in Oslo, Norway, a three-album deal with Unique Leader Records was forged. In late July 2011 the band entered 16th Cellar to record their Obeisance Rising debut. The lyrical concept is based on John Carpenter’s immortal masterstroke They Live, a dramatically relevant testimony of a dark era that never ended. In 2014 HIDEOUS DIVINITY offers up Cobra Verde, another cinematographic concept album, this time based on Klaus Kinski’s and Werner Herzog’s masterpiece of the same name. The album sounds even darker and more powerful, both conceptually and musically, than their critically-lauded debut. Brace yourself.

“…without a doubt one of the best releases of 2014.” — Headbangorgtfo

Cobra Verde will be released in the US on October 28th, 2014, the UK on October 27th and the rest of Europe on October 31st. Preorder your copy at THIS LOCATION.

ATRIARCH: Atmospheric Death/Doom Conjurers Unleash New Psalm Of Sickness At Noisey; An Unending Pathway Release Day Looms

Thursday, October 16th, 2014

An Unending Pathway is the forthcoming new full-length from Pacific Northwest death/doom conjurors, ATRIARCH. A living entity comprised of four parts, together the mesmerizing collective summon forth haunting atmospheres and droning avalanches of ritualistic sludge, offering catharsis through sonic ritual. Merging death rock, doom, black metal, post punk and psychedelic drone/noise, ATRIARCH stand among one of the most creative and compelling heavy music bands of the twenty-first century.

In celebration of An Unending Pathway’s imminent unveiling, today the gate keepers at Vice Magazine’s music portal, Noisey, offer up fourth movement “Bereavement” for public consumption.

Relays Noisey: “On this new record, the Portland quartet harness the crippling power of doom and hold it tight in death’s cold embrace, leaning hard towards moody gothic horror and injecting spare moments of black metal possession and glimmers of psychedelia. There’s a lurching, ritualistic feel to the proceedings, and a dire hopelessness in the vocals that doesn’t let up for a moment. It’s death rock that OD’s on death. Knob-twiddler extraordinaire Billy Anderson has his feather-light fingertips all over this one, coaxing each element into its full potential even as he weaves it all together into a thoroughly crushing force. The end result is as dark and eerily atmospheric as an abandoned graveyard at midnight.”

Drink the punch to the echoing, soul-wrenching sounds of “Bereavement” at THIS LOCATION.

You can also experience the cold audio decay of “Allfather” still streaming at Cvlt Nation at THIS LOCATION as well as the the haunting resonance of “Collapse” HERE.

Tracked at Type Foundry in Portland, Oregon, produced by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, Melvins et al) and the band, engine-eared and mixed by Anderson at Everything Hz, also in Portland, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Beastmilk, Nails) at Audiosiege, An Unending Pathway offers up seven cataclysmic soundscapes to your deepest darkest hallucinations. Cvlt Nation commends the outfit’s, “arresting and welcome combination of doom metal, death rock, black metal, and Mid Eastern-influenced darkwave sound,” while Sea Of Tranquility gushes, “An Unending Pathway is so out there at times that it’s almost puzzling. For some, this melting pot of sounds, mixed with the frightening tone of much of the album, is going to be very unsettling…ATRIARCH have to be given credit for trying something totally different, injecting a breath of fresh air into the extreme metal genre.” Adds MetalStorm, in an 8.5/10 review, “An Unending Pathway is quite likely ATRIARCH’s best album to date. If the third album of a band’s discography is typically held as the ‘make it or break it.’ point, these guys not only break through the wall, they pummel it into dust.”

ATRIARCH will bring their ceremonials to the stage this November on a West Coast run of live performances. Slated to commence November 7th in Seattle, the band will traumatize thirteen cities through November 21st. See confirmed shows below.
