PRIMORDIAL: Where Greater Men Have Fallen In-Depth Track-By-Track Breakdown Posted At Revolver

Wednesday, December 17th, 2014

Where Greater Men Have Fallen is the long-anticipated new studio album from Ireland’s most revered metal craftsman, PRIMORDIAL. Released via Metal Blade late last month, the record debuted at #24 on Billboard’s Top New Artist Chart, #43 on Billboard’s Top New Artist Chart, #104 on Billboard’s Independent Albums Chart and, offering up some of the band’s deepest, most conceptually profound and wildly epic compositions to date, continues to floor fans and critics worldwide.

In commemoration of its release, today Revolver Magazine brings fans a thorough track-by-track breakdown of the offering as told by vocalist Alan Averill. Check it out at THIS LOCATION.

Tracked at Grouse Lodge in Dublin with Jaime Gomez (Cathedral, Angelwitch, Grave Miasma), PRIMORDIAL’s Where Greater Men Have Fallen is an eight-track, fifty-eight minute masterwork Stereogum dubs “almost Maiden-esque in its majesty,” driven by the compelling vocal urgency of Averill, who Pitchfork crowns, “one of the most captivating bandleaders in metal.”

PRIMORDIAL will bring their sonic savagery to stages throughout Europe in the coming weeks with additional live ceremonials to be announced soon.

one of the most treasured bands in metal today.” – Thrash Hits

Where Greater Men Have Fallen is yet another album that celebrates both the band’s national Celtic pride and their heavy metal roots. PRIMORDIAL proves that relevancy isn’t just in the music you write, it’s in the love of what you do.” – Mxdwn

Metal Grasshopper: Episode 5, Starring Down’s Philip H. Anselmo + Comedian Dave Hill Now Playing At Metal Injection

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

The Metal Grasshopper series continues and Episode 5 offers a “Vulgar Display of Feelings” as Philip H. Anselmo agrees to undergo group counseling with delusional manchild, Dave Hill, in an effort to rescue the goat that also happens to be Anselmo’s grandmother. There’s not a dry seat in the house as Dr. Joe Randazzo aids Anselmo and Hill in an exploration of their feelings.

Scroll on over to Metal Injection to watch Metal Grasshopper Episode 5: “Vulgar Display of Feelings,” with the whole damn family at THIS LOCATION. While you’re there, catch your lazy ass up on the last four chapters”

Episode 1: “Origins” – Anselmo reluctantly agrees to share his heavy metal wisdom with Hill.

Episode 2: “The Awakening” – Anselmo schools young Hill on headbanging, heavy metal vocals, and the most extreme of all breakfast cereals. Oh, and Dave takes a phone message for Phil from King Diamond, which is awesome.

Episode 3: “Metal Or Not Metal?” – Anselmo puts Hill to the test with a round of heavy metal flash cards. Later Anselmo makes Hill sit in a closet for a seriously long time while he makes an awesome salad. Also, Hill rents a goat.

Episode 4: “Unscared” – Anselmo lets Hill loose on an unsuspecting public, where he meets an actual woman. Anselmo also schools Hill on stage banter, corpse paint, and other important topics. Later Anselmo and Hill get in a huge argument from which they may never recover!

Metal Grasshopper pairs the unlikely duo of metal master Philip H. Anselmo with comedian, dandy, and NPR darling, Dave Hill. Hill begs Anselmo to mold him into “the baddest metal motherfucker of all time.” Anselmo begrudgingly relents and the abuse and absurdity reaches epic levels. Metal Grasshopper was directed by Chris Lee with Joe Randazzo, written by Chris Lee, Dave Hill, and Phil Anselmo, edited by Phil Costello and produced by Chris Lee.

ENSIFERUM: Finnish Folk Metal Collective To Release New Full-Length This February Via Metal Blade Records

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

Finland’s favorite folk metal collective and recent Metal Blade signees, ENSIFERUM, will unleash their sixth studio album this Winter. Titled One Man Army, the predominantly analog-recorded offering was tracked between September and November of this year with award-winning producer Anssi Kippo (Children Of Bodom, Impaled Nazarene, Entwine etc.) at Astia-Studios in Lappeenranta, Finland.

Elaborates ENSIFERUM bassist/vocalist Sammi Hinkka of the sessions, “The recording process was long, hard, rewarding and full of incredible moments. Instruments were actually played and left as they were instead of creating tracks from hundreds of different takes, moving them to the grid and modifying things.  Of course computers were used but overall we made everything as analog as possible. Listeners can experience a better sound and natural groove, something that we think most metal albums lack these days. Overall, the album sounds much more like a band playing live rather than ‘midi-metal.’”

Commended by Outburn for songs that are consistently “epic” in scope with a “reliance on catchy melodies,” ENSIFERUM’s One Man Army serves as the follow-up to 2012’s lauded Unsung Heroes full-length and boasts the stunningly detailed, mythological cover craftings of renowned illustrator Gyula Havancsák (Annihilator, Tyr, Elvenking, Stratovarius etc).

“On the new album, we took many things musically to the next level so we decided also to try something new graphics-wise,” relays Hinkka. “Gyula Havancsák did a phenomenal job! For the first time it was really nice to be more involved with designing the cover and all details. Our humble gratitude to Gyula for all the patience and really amazing results. We couldn’t be more satisfied!”

As a precursor to the release, ENSIFERUM recently unleashed the fittingly-titled “Warmetal” for public consumption. Composed by Demonos Sova of Finnish black metal unit, Barathrum, the track is available on the covermount CD of the current issue of Germany’s Legacy Magazine in all its battle-ready glory.

ENSIFERUM’s One Man Army will be released via Metal Blade Records on February 24th, 2015. Further details, including track listing and additional teaser hymns to be unveiled in the coming weeks. In the meantime, 70,000 Tons of Metal voyagers will be able to catch ENSIFERUM live next month before they kick off a massive European trek, wielding their swords alongside Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum. CORRECTIONS HOUSE Forced To Postpone Remaining December US Tour Dates

Monday, December 15th, 2014

Due to vocalist Mike IX Williams’ exhaustive touring and recording schedule these past years, a doctor’s strict orders for rest, vitamins and general physical recovery has been prescribed, and it is with deep regret that CORRECTIONS HOUSE has postponed the last few remaining dates of the Writing History In Advance US tour.

Notes IX Williams in an official statement: “Overwork, nonstop travel, overexertion on stage and poor eating habits will eventually grind you to rubble. I need a bit of time to heal and repair my wounded body and mind.”

CORRECTIONS HOUSE released their Writing History In Advance recording, a menacing testament of sonic decay captured live in Los Angeles earlier this year. The release is available as a CD digipack via War Crime Recordings at THIS LOCATION and digitally HERE. The band’s newly recorded, as-yet-untitled sophomore offering will be released in 2015 along with a brand new round of live infiltrations to be announced next year.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE features IX Williams (EyeHateGod) alongside accomplices Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) Sanford Parker (Minsk) and minister of propaganda, Seward Fairbury. The collective released their Last City Zero debut via Neurot Recordings last year. Produced by Parker at Electrical Audio, Soma Studios, 60 Psycho Hum and Nodferatu’s Lair, Last City Zero is the audio end product of government conspiracies, societal ruin and psychological decay.

SARPANITUM: Atmospheric Blackened Death Metal Unit To Release Long-Awaited New Studio Album Via Willowtip Records This February; Artwork + Track Listing Revealed

Monday, December 15th, 2014

Once Birmingham UK-based now internationally-located atmospheric blackened death metal unit, SARPANITUM, who feature within their consuming ranks current and former members of Mithras, Lantlos and Tenebrous Aeon, will release their long awaited, second full-length and first for forward-thinking extreme metal perpetrators, Willowtip Records, this February.

Titled Blessed Be My Brothers, the ten-track follow-up to 2011’s critically-fawned upon Fedelium EP was composed over a two-year period, tracked at Dreaming Studios UK by drummer Leon Macey (Contrarian, Mithras, The Senseless et al) and boasts a diseased fusion of traditional death metal, blackened guitar riff compulsions, and melodic atmospheres fit for devout supporters of Gorguts, Nile, Anata, Kataklysm, Morbid Angel, Ulcerate and the like.

Comments Tom Innocenti of the release: “Blessed Be My Brothers is true labor of love. The record maintains a blackened death metal sound but also incorporates more personal touches in terms of the music and lyrical themes. The song writing and atmospheric elements have progressed vastly since our first album, Despoilment Of Origin and Fidelium EP while still being recognizable as SARPANITUM. Listeners will notice a huge leap forward with regards to this album. Blessed Be My Brothers is a journey into the hearts and minds of those caught the turmoil of religious warfare. A subject that is as relevant today as it was over a thousand years ago.”

Blessed Be My Brothers Track Listing:
1. Komenos
2. By Virtuous Reclamation
3. Truth
4. Glorification Upon The Powdered Bones Of The Sundered Dead
5. Immortalised As Golden Spires
6. Thy Sermon Lies Forever Tarnished
7. I Defy For I Am Free
8. Homeland
9. Malek Al-Inkitar
10. Blessed Be My Brothers

Since forming in 2003, SARPANITUM has maintained a maniacal DIY ethos, crumbling stages throughout Europe supporting the likes of Insision, Visceral Bleeding, Desecration, The Monolith Death Cult and Macabre. Centered around Babolyanian folklore, the band’s Galactic Records-released debut full-length, Despoilment Of Origin (2007) was an eloquently guttural performance of mythological blackened death metal that reaped the praise of underground listeners and media outlets in the proverbial “know.” Ultimate Guitar championed its, “stellar… musicianship,” naming it a, “fierce and confident death metal record,” while the Metal Observer, in a 9/10 rating, added, “equal parts brutal and beautiful, SARPANITUM’s debut is easily one of the best death metal albums to be released this year.” The band’s Fidelium EP, independently-released four years later, reaffirmed their inexorable brutality both sonically and conceptually. Crowned, “one of the most compelling death metal releases of the year,” by Last Rites and guaranteed to, “tickle the taste buds of anyone into this kind of domineering metal in the vein of The Monolith Deathcult and Mithras,” the EP established SARPANITUM’s ability to cohesively meld audio savagery and epic, cinematic segments, centering itself on the ultimate perils of religious fanaticism using first person perspectives from genuine participants of the First Crusade.

Blessed Be My Brothers will be unleashed via Willowtip Records on February 17th, 2015 with preorders and teaser tracks to be posted shortly. Stay vigilant.

PILLORY: Technical Death Metal Strategists Launch New Video Via Revolver Magazine

Friday, December 12th, 2014

Boston technical death metal strategists, PILLORY, today unleash their brand new video for “Imbeciles In Defiance.” The tune comes by way of their punishing Evolutionary Miscarriage full-length, released earlier this year via Unique Leader Records.

Written, recorded and produced by founding drummer Darren Cesca (Arsis, Burn in Silence, Goratory et al) at his newly-launched House Of Grind Studios in Connecticut during 2013, PILLORY’s Evolutionary Miscarriage is centered thematically around the de-evolution of mankind. A physically and mentally consuming sound excursion, Evolutionary Miscarriage brandishes deranged rhythms, maniacal riff onslaughts, subtle white noise nuances and multi-layered vocals all executed together with near surgical meticulousness, the record’s sharp production allowing each lacerating note to shine while retaining the blunt brutality of its predecessor, No Life Guard At The Gene Pool. Accurately describes Metal Forces, “Album number two offers eleven quizzical cuts that refuse to rest on any laurels, but instead one moment race with a frenzy only to pulverize with perplexing dryness and inaccessible pattern shifts. It belongs in the same algae-ridden corner of space once carved out by the likes of Pestilence, then Cynic, and onto Gorguts, Necrophagist, Origin etc., but it’s only real similarity to these heavyweights is its ability to bewilder and jolt the bones so that they crumble under the sheer force of the unpredictable twists and turns.”

Check out the slick performance clip for “Imbeciles In Defiance,” focusing on the band’s signature intricacies, courtesy of Revolver at THIS LOCATION. Then go home and practice.

Evolutionary Miscarriage is out now via Unique Leader Records HERE.

YOB’s Clearing The Path To Ascend Topples Year-End Lists; Band To Level Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar This Weekend

Friday, December 12th, 2014

Released early this Fall via Neurot Recordings, Clearing The Path To Ascend, the latest studio album from Portland’s favorite doom conjurors, YOB, has earned mass love and attention from fans and media outlets both stateside and abroad.

Recorded at Gung Ho Studio in Eugene alongside longtime YOB comrade/iconic sound wizard, Billy Barnett and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Beastmilk, Nails) at Audiosiege, Clearing The Path To Ascend is a wholly visceral listening experience that demands the tandem attention of mind, body, and soul. Rolling Stone ranked Clearing The Path To Ascend at the coveted  #1 spot on their 20 Best Metal Albums Of 2014, noting “The seventh album from Oregon doom metal sky-gazers, YOB, … makes perfect bedfellows of volume and beauty, pain and transcendence,” further enthusing, “Opener ‘In Our Blood’ extends a simple riff into complex arches, tracing [vocalist Mike] Scheidt’s voice as it moves from an exquisite falsetto to a death-metal bellow in the course of sixteen-minutes. And during the colossal closer ‘Marrow’ — possibly the best metal song of the year, one that uses low notes to play uplifting melodies — Scheidt sings ‘Time will fall inside the dream.’ His voice suddenly reaches out like a clarion’s call, clear and telling and beautiful. It’s a pronouncement from the living, a semaphore pointing into the future.” The record earned the #7 spot on Decibel’s Top 40 Albums Of 2014, the esteemed metal rag noting, “Mike Scheidt’s songwriting has never been stronger or more dynamic… a masterful return to form by an American doom powerhouse,” while Wondering Sound placed the offering at #9 among their 25 Best Metal Albums Of 2014 proclaiming, “The sound on Clearing The Path To Ascend is tactile: You can practically feel vocalist/guitarist Mike Scheidt’s callused hands sliding up and down the guitar neck…This isn’t a case of fixing what was broken; it’s about becoming greater than they already were.” On their 2014 Best Heavy Metal Albums List, About.com lists YOB at #1, championing “Marrow” in particular, “The closing, sprawling eighteen-minute plus ‘Marrow’ takes every previously visited songwriting element on Clearing The Path To Ascend and brings it all together into beautifully melancholic combination of heaviness and melody, a fitting capstone to a gem of an album.” The record ranked in at #11 on Stereogum’s Top 50 Albums Of 2014: “Clearing The Path To Ascend is YOB at their most frenzied (‘Nothing To Win’) as well as their gentlest (‘Marrow’), but taken as whole, its four songs feel like the seasons or the elements: powerful, eternal, wondrous, and bigger than all of us.”  Added Steel For Brains, on their Best Of Heavy Music Releases Of 2014, “For all its heaviness, the album is disarmingly meditative, relying less on forcing the mood for the listener and entrusting that the human commonalities of love, loss, fear, and hope threaded throughout the music will render an altogether familiar place of comfort and strength within the listener.”

In related news, YOB will rumble the infrastructure of Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar this weekend on two special sold out appearances, the first set to take place tonight with Tombs and King Destroy, the second on Saturday with Occultation and Ecstatic Vision with additional US live rituals to be announced in the weeks to come.

12/13/2014 Saint Vitus Bar – Brooklyn, NY [info]

YOB’s Clearing The Path To Ascend is available now via Neurot Recordings HERE.

“…Mike Scheidt continues to drive his band YOB to new heights of epic, darkly spiritual doom without consideration for trends, self-consciousness or the whims of fickle consumers. At sixty-two minutes yet only four songs, Clearing The Path To Ascend rewards the patient while almost deliberately snubbing the ADD set… Scheidt uses art as catharsis, and that means you as listener as well if you want to take that journey with him.” – Metal Injection

CORRECTIONS HOUSE: Seward Fairbury Issues Roadside Update

Thursday, December 11th, 2014

CORRECTIONS HOUSE is currently terrorizing the US on a three-week live takeover. The expedition kicked off on November 30th in Boston, Massachusetts and will draw to a close on December 20th in Portland, Oregon.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE minister of propaganda, Seward Fairbury, sent the following roadside missive: “The people of this country are lazy asses who want to sit around and believe the fear and lies that their TVs bring into their homes every night. Although the attendance has averaged around 200 people per night, on more than one night of this tour the turnout to our gigs was affected adversely by the fear-mongering in the press surrounding CORRECTIONS HOUSE. The boys have expressed to me their pleasure in getting out of the Northeast and Midwest and heading to the soul of America in the South and the Wild West were people are traditionally freer in their minds. CORRECTIONS HOUSE brings a very unique and intense performance to the stage every night and we look forward the last eight days of this journey. Step forward Americans, embrace the horror with clear hearts and open arms.”

CORRECTIONS HOUSE Tour 2014 [remaining dates]:
12/11/2014 Fitzgeralds – Houston, TX
12/12/2014 Hotel Vegas – Austin, TX
12/14/2014 Three Links – Dallas, TX
12/16/2014 Club Red – Mesa, AZ
12/17/2014 Complex – Los Angeles, CA
12/18/2014 Soda Bar – San Diego, CA
12/19/2014 DNA – San Francisco, CA
12/20/2014 Rotture – Portland, OR

In conjunction with the tour, CORRECTIONS HOUSE released Writing History In Advance, a devious testament of sonic decomposition recorded live in Los Angeles earlier this year. The release is available as a CD digipack via War Crime Recordings at THIS LOCATION and digitally HERE.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE features Fairbury alongside sound conspirators Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod), Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) and Sanford Parker (Minsk). The collective released their Last City Zero debut full-length via Neurot Recordings last year. Produced by Parker at Electrical Audio, Soma Studios, 60 Psycho Hum and Nodferatu’s Lair, Last City Zero is the audio end product of government conspiracies, societal ruin and psychological decay. The collective recently put the finishing touches on their forthcoming new full-length, set for release sometime in 2015. Further info to be revealed as it develops. Until then, suffer.
