Eolian Empire’s Summer Of Cuz Underway; Slew Of New Releases + Festicide Announced

Thursday, July 10th, 2014

Welcome to another digest of all the news fit to shit for Eolian Empire’s Summer of Cuz… cuz they said so: Some of the hot stuff coming up this time through the ringer includes a DRUNK DAD record release show, new releases announcements for BIG BLACK CLOUD, HUMOURS and NORSKA as well as the KEEP OUR HEADS – ALIVE! compilation, a sweltering video from HOT VICTORY, a US tour for HONDURAN and DRUNK DAD, Euro tour for RABBITS and ÅRABROT, and the confirmation of the label’s first compilation internationale.

DRUNK DAD has left the, um, bar. The aggrography of the new twisted-as-shit LP Ripper Killer is capturing the ears of bad-tasters everywhere: “Combining the thunderous sludge of Melvins, the confrontational punk rock of Flipper, and the abrasion and psychosis of Harvey Milk, this brilliantly named band wastes no time grabbing your attention” (Decibel), “like a triple word score for ‘noise rock’ and ‘grunge’” (Invisible Oranges), “equal parts shocking, thrilling, and kick ass” (Verbicide), “Finally, someone uses the monikers grunge and hardcore and that’s exactly what you get all modernized and shit” (Metal Descent), “destructive loathing and blood clot-fueled tirades amidst gnarled, back-bending riffs, devastating drumrolls and punishing noise outbursts” (Covering the Scene), “a fascinating, involving record that measures its bleakness with a truly intelligent approach to noise” (Portland Mercury). Okay, okay, enough already. DRUNK DAD plays a hometown release show this Friday at the Information Warehouse in Portland with labelmates HONDURAN and BIG BLACK CLOUD as well as Seattle depravists Health Problems and post-post-punk rulers Tyrants. A whirlwind US tour with HONDURAN is planned for September; a full routing will be dispatched in the coming days.

Furious sci-fi punks, BIG BLACK CLOUD, birthed us all a new EP from a caravan recording at the Fancy Fox (if you have to ask…), to be released on cassette and digital August 5th, just in time for their tour de California. With commendations of the band’s Black Friday LP via Spin, Magnet, and MRR, among others still fresh, picking up where the “tense, taut, seething, screaming fury” (Spin) of the album left off, the new ripper, Lessons in Fuck You 2, captures the same weird and wild anxious alien anthems that compels the punters back again and again. BIG BLACK CLOUD’s justly cross and rarefied mix of punk, noise, garage, surf, and rock is as noisy, vibrant, catchy, and fucked as ever: rhythms that drive and swerve, threat-level guitar terrorism, and a high dosage of goddamn-you-all-to-hell preaches. Is it any wonder why we adore them so? Check out their battering live version of “Cities of the Red Night” from the KEEP OUR HEADS – ALIVE! compilation and catch their reckless rock live in the Golden State next month.

Sharp-as-tacks quartet HUMOURS wrapped up their debut EP, The Onanist, due out early fall on vinyl and digital. Stripped-down ‘70s prog hits ‘90s post-hardcore headlong to manifest a fascinating compulsion: technical, visceral, future rock for the new and old-schoolers alike. Featuring members of 1939 Ensemble and engineer extraordinaire Fester (Rabbits, Honduran, Usnea, Stoneburner), HUMOURS expertly flits through complex progressions and movements with a mastery of dynamics, speed, and emotion buoyed by strong, melodic vocals, all captured on an impeccable recording of four tracks, including a new version of “In the Court of the Corn-Eyed King” from the original KEEP OUR HEADS compilation of Portland heavy underground bands. Not to be taken lightly.

More stuff to stuff in your earholes… the KEEP OUR HEADS – ALIVE! digital-only compilation of twelve tracks from the twelve acts (Acre, Ix, Norska, Hot Victory, Big Black Cloud, Gaytheist, Redneck, Sioux, Palo Verde, Towers, Honduran, Rabbits) who played the KEEP OUR HEADS release shows last April is out. Limitations in the recordings may reflect the fact that we recorded it on a digital 4-track and these were real bands playing in front of real people… but, you know, don’t be a dick about it, because it’s FREE and sounds pretty fucking good. The mighty NORSKA hits the studio next week with Adam Pike (Red Fang, Diesto, Black Elk) to record their first ever full-length, a long overdue follow-up to their acclaimed 2011 EP on Brutal Panda. NORSKA draws from throughout the heavy musical realms to forge their own extraordinarily compelling amalgam of progressive burl, apparent in their live “Nobody One Knows” from KEEP OUR HEADS – ALIVE!. HOT VICTORY, Portland’s extragalactic drums-synths-’n'-samples duo, back from their US tour with Floor, just completed their video for “Island Realm,” so very soon you’ll see how they make such a outrageous racket all by themselves — while sitting down. Thorns-in-our-sides, RABBITS, returns to Europe in October with Norwegian greats, ARABROT, in support of their new record Untoward, due out August 12th on Lamb Unlimited. Their matinee release show Saturday August 16th takes place during the three-day, seven-show, twenty-five-band D.I.Y. “anti-fest” dubbed Festicide, running from August 15th – 17th; a celebration of the heavy, noisy, and weird featuring Eolian artists RABBITS, HONDURAN, DIESTO, TOWERS, DRUNK DAD, and BIG BLACK CLOUD among heavy friends like Thrones, Stoneburner, Hungers and Sloths, with all shows $5 or free. And finally, Eolian Empire is assembling a sequel to KEEP OUR HEADS, tentatively titled FIENDS IN LOW PLACES: Heavy Vibes Internationale, featuring a sick lineup of heavy underground acts from all around the world in their ongoing effort to, you know, build their fucking empire.

For more straight dope check out and the requisite other internets.  Later daze.

ORBWEAVER: Corpse Flower Records Release Vinyl Edition Of Critically Lauded Transmissions From The Neuralnomicon EP

Thursday, July 10th, 2014

Detroit-based Corpse Flower Records is pleased to release the vinyl edition of Transmissions From The Neuralnomicon, from Florida exploratory death metal behemoths, ORBWEAVER!

The brain-fraying Transmissions From The Neuralnomicon EP was recorded at Miami’s Pinecrust Studios with Jonathan Nunez of Torche and initially released last Summer in a limited run of 100 cassette tapes via Primitive Violence Records and on CD direct through the band. The vinyl edition has been remastered by James Plotkin (OLD, Scorn, Khanate, Khlyst) and limited to 300, hand-numbed and assembled copies in three color configurations: 100 on translucent blue, 100 on translucent orange and 100 on translucent purple. Each copy comes with an an 11” x 17” poster and digital download.

Commended for their, “twitchy, trippy tech death,” by Invisible Oranges and called, “big, oozing and unusual,” by Sea Of Tranquility, on Strange Transmissions From The Neuralnomicon ORBWEAVER journeys far beyond conventional genre realms with a kaleidoscopic fusion of psychedelia, noise, and a distorted rendering of progressive death metal. Continually shape-shifting between these impetuous, trance-like elements, ORBWEAVER conjures interplanetary pandemonium reminiscent of a Zappa-esque brand of controlled and violently elegiac chaos.

Order Strange Transmissions From The Neuralnomicon on wax via Corpse Flower Records at THIS LOCATION.

“Death metal weirdos like Gorguts and Obscura hook up with the unstable bent of Dysrhythmia and Psyopus for a sensory taxing good time.” – Decibel

ORBWEAVER have definitely blended the right mix of atmosphere with the right mix of experimental technical death metal to make a listen that is superbly solid and second to none. Whatever you want to call this stuff, I definitely hope to hear more ‘alien metal’ in the future…5/5” – New Noise

“From the giant aliens on the EP sleeve, to the freak show, drug crazed blends of musicianship, this EP is an absolute ball-tearer…” – Metal Roos

“…awesome and fun…” – Last Rites

“…if you’ve experienced the technical insanity of bands like Gigan or Wormed and have wondered what it would sound like if those groups weren’t always focused on all-out assaults and fell into a hazier drug induced void on occasion ORBWEAVER’s perfect.” – Cosmos Gaming

FATHER MURPHY: Avant Occult Duo Issues Tour Update; Collaboration With Illustrator/Animator Luca Dipierro Posted + Additional Live Ceremonies Announced

Tuesday, July 8th, 2014

Italian avant occult duo, FATHER MURPHY, has been infecting North America with their eccentric hymns of decadence. Comments the terrifying twosome earnestly of their journey thus far, “Over the last few weeks our hearts pumped and our blood run together with all of you who promoted, booked, played at and came our shows. To all of you who fed us, gave us a place to sleep and even simply shared a thought and a word with us, its been an honor and a privilege to feel part of a community. We never cared for [music] scenes, but it meant a lot to feel our heartbeats having the same tempo with some of the people around us.”

The band will continue to spread their cryptically evocative psychedelic soundscrapes to unsuspecting souls through July and August with additional rituals throughout the States to be announced in the coming weeks. Keep up with the band’s passage via twitter HERE.

7/09/2014 Live at Radio Valencia (8-10 am) – San Francisco, CA
7/11/2014 Late Friday Nights @ Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive – Berkeley, CA w/Gabriel Saloman
7/19/2014 House Of Milk And Honey – Sacramento, CA w/ Dead Western, Featherbeard
8/01/2014 Bottom Of The Hill – San Francisco, CA, w/ Xiu Xiu, Circuit Des Yeux

FATHER MURPHY recently collaborated with experimental Italian illustrator and animator Luca Dipierro at his Paper Circus show held at Portland’s Clinton Street Theater. Dipierro’s short films, called “a perfect mix between creepy and charming” by The Huffington Post, are carnivalesque tales of acrobacy and death that draw from the traditions of Italian commedia dell’arte and Sicilian teatro dei pupi (marionette theatre). Sorrowful and comical at once, Dipierro’s animations tell stories of trees growing out of furniture, stranded Columbus-like explorers, puppet funerals, monkeys, prestidigitators, ghosts, and a woman birthing a fish.

Check out the trilogy of FATHER MURPHY clips as well as the haunting soundtrack to Dipierro’s visual madness BELOW.

A venture The Wire likened to “homemade Morricone and toytown Goblin,” FATHER MURPHY continues to tour in support of their Pain Is On Our Side Now EP, released via Aagoo Records earlier this year. A concept album that centers itself on imminent failure, Pain Is On Our Side Now boasts four chilling tracks of eroticism, decadence and emotional/physical decay, each playable on their own merit but with the additional option of synchronized playback for tracks one and three, or two and four, conjoining into two new sonic excursions Aquarius Records christened, “…woozy and ominous, dreamy and dense, a glorious deathlike dirge…”

Spawned near Venice and boasting three albums and a plethora of EPs and limited releases, the grim duo — Rev. Freddie Murphy (vocals, guitar) and Chiara Lee (vocals, keyboards, percussions) — has, over the years, shapeshifted into one of Italy’s most mysterious and enigmatic musical exports, part of the community that esteemed music critic, Simon Reynolds, dubbed the new “Italian occult psychedelia.” Evolving from twisted psychedelic pop into a far darker sonic exploration, FATHER MURPHY manifests foreboding songs that crawl and twist and hiss like that old biblical serpent; their off-kilter, traumatic creations not only earning the critical accolades of media both statside and abroad but winning over the adoration of Julian Cope, Carla Bozulich, Deerhoof, Michael Gira and so many others.

It’s only when you reach the bottom that you feel you can still dig…

“The oddball psychedelic chamber pop the Italian duo exhale will creep you out with drones, lullabies and anguished vocals all competing for front-runner spot in your next nightmare. Perfect.” – Terrorizer

“It’s dark, menacing and terrifying yet there is a sense of beauty and peace at the heart of the music… There is tranquility, fear, calm, movement… FATHER MURPHY have set the bar pretty high for experimental music, creating something that is both challenging and satisfying… a rare master stroke for a genre that is often glutted with over indulgent thirty-minute noise pieces with no real discernable voice or motif. Well done FATHER MURPHY, well done.” – Grave Concerns

“…a must listen. It’s very experimental, very random and very off putting. A weird & terrifyingly unique experience.” – Headbangorgtfo

“You’ve heard the phrase ‘uneasy listening?’ This is THAT. There is nothing cheery or comforting about FATHER MURPHY, but lordy, if you have a taste for dark, immersive, non-personality-based cine-music, this may be something to lose yourself in. Best recommended if you’re a LAPSED Catholic or ‘other’ in the religious column, though. If you’re still going to mass and taking communion, well, you’re liable to head straight for confession after hearing this stuff.” – Zacharymule

“Post-punk and gothic sounds are perfectly blended and when you add to this mix medieval elements and echoing terrifying vocals, the outcome is a mysterious music with a strong ritualistic character.” – Echoes And Dust

GOATWHORE Celebrates Record Release With A Special Meet And Greet At Grill ‘Em All; Constricting Rage Of The Merciless Out TODAY + Live Takeover Underway

Tuesday, July 8th, 2014

Louisiana metal miscreants, GOATWHORE, will celebrate the release of their mammoth Constricting Rage Of The Merciless full-length with a meet and greet next week at the world famous Grill ‘Em All brick and mortar restaurant in Alhambra, California! The event will commence at 7:00 pm on Wednesday July 16th. Fans will get to hang with the band, hear the record in full as well as purchase a copy if they haven’t already. Additionally, Grill ‘Em All will add to the unholy revelry with special Constricting Rage Of The Merciless fries – Hand cut fries smothered in creole gumbo with chicken, smoked sausage, and shrimp! Come hungry.

On the following day in San Francisco, GOATWHORE will kick off a near month-long stretch of live incursions as part of The Summer Slaughter tour alongside death metal legends Morbid Angel, Dying Fetus, The Faceless, Fallujah and more!

The band is currently slaying stages in support of Constricting Rage Of The Merciless, out TODAY on Metal Blade Records. Heaving forth ten mutinous tracks of thick, unadulterated, subterranean metal, Constricting Rage Of The Merciless is at once predatory, epic, misanthropic and sadistic. Inarguably GOATWHORE’s most sonically consuming, meticulously executed manifestation of their catalog of chaos, the critical fuck yeahs from fans and media alike are literally flooding in. In an 8/10 score, Decibel Magazine crowns the record, “a blasphemous blast,” in a 9.5/10 rating, Dead Rhetoric christens it, “a masterful work of extreme metal,” while dubs Constricting Rage Of The Merciless, “an instant classic,” awarding it a perfect 5/5. Elsewhere, Metal Injection names it, the new high water mark of the group’s work thus far,” Planet Mosh commends GOATWHORE’s seamless ability to fuse “everything from hyperspeed melodic black metal (reminiscent of underground guys like Noctuary), to thrash metal’s crunch, to death metal’s ‘kill first, ask questions later’ ethos,” furthering that, “polished, deliberate bayou evil permeates each well-crafted tune,” while Exclaim gushes in an 8/10 review, “GOATWHORE have always had the stench of brimstone about them, and their latest offering in no different, a vein of smoldering hatred for everything pure and good anchoring the record in a kind of ravenous decadence.” Killyourstereo agrees applauding, “an entirety evil and enticing record. The perfect use of vocal ranges from low and aggressive growls to higher notes further adds to the tone, while the dynamic changes and scattered guitar solos add some complexity.”

BASTARD OF THE SKIES & GRIMPEN MIRE: Cvlt Nation Delivers New Tracks From Both Acts Featured On Split Album

Thursday, July 3rd, 2014

Cvlt Nation today rolls out new tracks from two of the top-tier acts from within the UK’s underground doom/sludge/noise community: BASTARD OF THE SKIES and GRIMPEN MIRE.

Culled from the new split LP released by Manchester-based Future Noise Recordings, the partial sampling of the dual-band release gives bystanders an ominous forecast of what this monolithic album bears. Leading off the sonic pounding is the LP’s A-side opener “Yarn,” by Blackburn’s noisiest sludge merchants, BASTARD OF THE SKIES, dispatching nearly five minutes of the band’s caustic grooves and tormented amplification. Birmingham’s purveyors of filthy doom, GRIMPEN MIRE, kick you while you’re down and drop their B-side lead-off, “The Hollow Wreck,” upon you like a rusted anvil collection while you’re unearthing yourself from the rubble of the first attack.

Dig into the devastation of BASTARD OF THE SKIES and GRIMPEN MIRE now at THIS LOCATION.

The LP is available in a limited run of 300 copies on black vinyl, each including a download card, HERE.

Fully comprised of new material from both bands, all seven tracks on the split were recorded by BASTARD OF THE SKIES guitarist/vocalist Matt Richardson at his own Full Stack Studio, then mastered by James Plotkin (OLD, Khanate, Khlyst). The limited 12” is adorned by Michael Cowell’s deeply evocative artwork, perfectly capturing the feeling of creeping dread evoked by both bands. BASTARD OF THE SKIES takes over Side A, with four songs that further reinforce the potency of their hard-hitting, sludgy noise rock that so captivated anyone subjected to their most recent full-length, 2012’s Tarnation. Cavernous, bass-heavy monsters will make A’s twenty-minutes feel like twenty-years of ugliness, corruption and anger as the unstoppable mega-riffs pile around the poor listener. Side B is left entirely to GRIMPEN MIRE’s sonic pollution, and their twenty-minutes are spent with but three songs, each driving the listener down into a deeper, darker pit of death and despair. Sounding even more despondent than they did on their cult debut full-length, 2012’s A Plague Upon Your Houses which still seems to plague us today, GRIMPEN MIRE delivers proper horrid doom as a perfect complement to BASTARD OF THE SKIES’ opening confrontational aggression.

CONNOISSEUR: West Coast Stoner Violence Trio Unleashes Three New Burners Via Noisey

Thursday, July 3rd, 2014

With the release of Stoner Justice, the debut EP from California chronic kings, CONNOISSEUR, less than a week away, Vice sound portal Noisey delivers three tasty tunes of toke-worthy goodness.

Likening themselves to Earth Crisis if they “smoked weed and listened to Spazz,” Smokeland, California-based CONNOISSEUR boasts a raging upbeat/d-beat barrage of West Bay powerviolence packed with resin-coated sludgedowns and disgustingly brutal cheeba-charged vocal exhalations that consume the listener in a violently stoned, inescapable haze, all recorded by Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios, Oakland (Annihilation Time, Iron Lung, Vhöl, Brainoil).

Elaborates Noisey: “If you’re the sensitive type of stoner, the rhetoric in straight-edge hardcore may get to you sometimes. Shit, you could be trying to throw down in the pit but some jerk with a bunch of Xs all over his hands could be trying to drag down your night, telling you how you’re weak or whatever because you drink occasionally. Luckily, CONNOISSEUR from have a few new songs, or maybe that’s joints, to bring the mosh. We’ve got an exclusive preview with these three tracks that aren’t going to judge if you want to blaze up in the pit. These tracks slay, showing influences from bands like Earth Crisis and Dropdead in under two minutes. But in that two minutes, you’re going to burn down your office, light a blunt in the flames, hit it, and then beat down any survivors. 4/20 raze it.”

Get spliffy with “Pot Hole,” “The Camper,” and “No Dice” courtesy of Noisey at THIS LOCATION.

And if your baked ass missed it, check out “Circle Of Heads” still streaming at Revolver HERE.

Additionally, CONNOISSEUR will levy their bong-blazing brilliance on stages throughout the West Coast for a two-week blunt-a-thon later this month. Smoke up, Johnny.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE Minister Of Propaganda, Seward Fairbury, MISSING! Band Marches On To Roskilde Festival

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014

CORRECTIONS HOUSE minister of propaganda, Seward Fairbury, has turned up missing from his place of residence this week in California after an apparently violent confrontation within his home. CORRECTIONS HOUSE member, Scott Kelly said, “The last time I had any contact with Seward was ten weeks ago; it’s not uncommon to not see him for weeks at a time, but he always keeps us in the loop with a postcard or a phone call  about once a month. We went by his trailer and it was completely trashed; it looked like there had been a serious disturbance. If you’ve ever met Seward, you know he’s mean as fuck and he isn’t gonna go anywhere he doesn’t want too. We’re reaching out through our connections and through Seward’s extensive family and trying to figure out what is going on.” The Lake Co. Sheriff’s office has issued a simple but ominous statement saying that the matter is under investigation but that they expect no cooperation from the Fairbury family, from his friends, or his neighbors in the the matter whatsoever.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE will soldier on without Fairbury, and continue to do work. They are releasing a live record due out this Fall entitled Writing History In Advance through War Crime Recordings, will continue to work on their next full length due out in early 2015 and will appear at the Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen, Denmark this Friday, July 4th. Additionally, the band will support Sleep for two nights in Chicago on August 28th and 29th at Thalia Hall.

CORRECTIONS HOUSE — the bastard sound manipulations of Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod), Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), Sanford Parker (Minsk) and their minister of propaganda, Seward Fairbury — is a meeting of minds and ideologies that sees all four members incorporating their obvious individual talents and voices but simultaneously carving paths away from the sounds for which they are usually known. On most recent full-length,  Last City Zero released last year via Neurot Recordings, they traverse tectonic plate-shifting doom and the downcast gloom of Kelly’s usual ouevre into mutated industrial hissing and clanging EBM beats from Parker, squalls and drones of oblique saxophone from Lamont and Williams’ familiar phlegm-drenched fire-spitting ire and all points in-between.

“Featuring dark, depressing atmospheres and exceptionally negative, apocalyptic vibes, Last City Zero is brooding, raw and corrosive, as well as breathtakingly beautiful…” – Exclaim

RINGS OF SATURN: Technical Death Metallers To Release Lugal Ki En; Artwork/Track Listing Revealed + The Face Implosion Tour 2014 To Commence Next Week

Tuesday, July 1st, 2014

Bay Area technical death metallers and self-proclaimed masters of “aliencore,” RINGS OF SATURN, will unleash their forthcoming new full-length this October via Unique Leader Records. Titled Lugal Ki En, the twelve-track offering was produced by Brette Ciamarra at Studio 344 (Kamikabe, Those Who Fear, Trophies et al) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and features the drum prowess of Black Tongue/Infant Annihilator basher Aaron Kitcher, guest solo work by Day Of Reckoning guitarist Rusty Cooley and custom artwork by Mark Cooper of Mind Rape Art, who crafted the band’s seminal Dingir cover.

Comments guitarist, Lucas Mann of the album concept, “The concept of the album in a nutshell is that long after the Aliens conquer humanity, they evolve to a point where they transcend space, time and reality to take their conquest into the realm of the gods where they wage war on angels and demons. The album title Lugal Ki En translates from ancient Sumerian cuneiform to mean ‘King Of The Earthlings, Lord Of The Cosmic World.’ The Sumerian cuneiform is visible behind the English pronunciation of the album title.”

1. Senseless Massacre
2. Desolate Paradise
3. Lalassu Xul
4. Infused (Feat. Rusty Cooley)
5. Fractal Intake
