SCOLEX & MORTUOUS: Bay Area Death Bringers Release Special Cassette Edition Of Two-Song Split Via Carbonized Records

“…the two projects come together to turn someone’s personal space into festering horror… each composition is death metal done in a most sinister way.” – Metal Injection

The death dealers in Oakland’s SCOLEX and San Jose’s MORTUOUS have unleashed their previously released split seven-inch on limited-edition cassette via Carbonized Records.

Initially released in 2018, both tracks were recorded at the infamous Earhammer Studios by Greg Wilkinson (Brainoil, Deathgrave) and Salvador Raya (Asunder, Laudanum) between 2012 and 2018, with mastering completed by Dan Randall (Ghoul, Toxic Holocaust, Noothgrush) at Mammoth Sound Mastering and artwork by Sebastian Mazuera (Torture Rack, Crurifragium).

Limited to 300 copies, the cassette edition comes in a clear case with a five-panel J-card and is available in three shell color variants: gold, black, or purple (download card included).

Order your copy today at the Carbonized website HERE or Bandcamp HERE where the split can be streamed.

SCOLEX was formed in Oakland, California in 2010 by drummer/vocalist Justin Green (Extraction, ex-Population Reduction, ex-Ghoul) and bassist/vocalist Erika Osterhout (Necrosic, Trepanation, ex-Extremity, ex-Lycus). Handling guitar duties themselves with occasional guest appearances from Danny Coralles of Autopsy, the duo recorded four tracks of doomy, punk-influenced death metal in late 2011, and released Torn From Beyond as a twelve-inch mini-LP on Osterhout’s own label, Lunar Tomb Records. With a live lineup in place, SCOLEX did several mini-tours through 2012 and 2013 with bands like Necrot and Undergang. The band went on hiatus shortly thereafter but kept busy with other projects including Femacoffin, Extraction, and Necrosic. In 2018, SCOLEX returned with a new lineup featuring guitarists Sonny Reinhardt (Necrot, Saviours) and Paul Riedl (Spectral Voice, Blood Incantation) for a West Coast tour with Acephalix, Mortiferum and Fetid. Fans of Autopsy, Nihilist/Entombed, and Runemagick pay heed.

MORTUOUS was forged in San Jose, California in 2009 from the ashes of guitarist Colin Tarvin’s previous project Funerealm. Tarvin began writing music in the vein of Incantation, Autopsy, and Viogression with lyrics centered heavily on philosophical views on death and anti-technological themes. Later that year he released the Mors Immortalis demo on Skeleton Plague Records. By 2010, MORTUOUS had a full lineup which included former Exhumed members drummer Col Jones and guitarist/vocalist Mike Beams as well as vocalist Al Tarvin-Kibler, and bassist Nick Scarboro. In 2013, the band parted ways with Tarvin-Kibler and Scarboro and recruited bassist Clint Roach. Drummer Chad Gailey of Necrot joined the fold that following year completing the band’s current incarnation. In November of 2016, MORTUOUS entered Earhammer Studios with Greg Wilkinson to record their debut full-length, Through Wilderness. The record was released in June 2018 through Carbonized and Tankcrimes Records in the United States with Dawnbreed and Extremely Rotten Productions handling the European edition. In September of 2018, MORTUOUS released a split 7″ with Scolex which made its debut at Kill-Town Death Fest VI: The Resurrection. In 2019, the band unleashed another split 7″ with Deform and made a few appearances at festivals such as Eternal Warfare, California Deathfest, Kill-Town Death Fest VII, and Decibel Metal And Beer Fest: Los Angeles. In 2020, the band release their long out-of-print Among The Lost and Mors Immortalis demos on CD via a joint partnership between Carbonized Records in the United States and Triumvirate Of Evil in Colombia.
