WATAIN: Swedish Black Metal Collective Unveil New DVD Trailer

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Swedish black metal collective WATAIN today offer up the second in a series of trailers from their upcoming Opus Diaboli anniversary DVD. The production commemorates the band’s 13 years of chaos by providing a visual and audio documentation of their ceremonial anniversary concert performance in Stockholm and the long years of physical, intellectual and spiritual work leading up to it. Opus Diaboli is an epic 90-minute journey into the forbidden realms of wild-hearted Satanic metal and the manifestation of a unique band that has truly chosen a path few have ever dared to tread upon. In addition, Opus Diaboli marks the the first release on WATAIN’s own label His Master’s Noise, a name originating from Bathory who had it in mind for their own label back in the early 1980s. Opus Diaboli will be unleashed in North America on June 5, 2012.

Check out the latest two-plus minute trailer, hosted exclusively by Decibel Magazine, as well as some words from vocalist Erik Danielsson about the production, at THIS LOCATION.

WATAIN Forced To Cancel First Five U.S. Appearances

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Swedish black metal horde WATAIN have been forced to cancel the first five shows (including one headlining performance) of their previously announced North American tour — scheduled to start tomorrow (April 11) in Columbus, Ohio — due to delays in the visa process.

Comments the band in a collective statement: “It’s not the first time the law stands in our way trying to prevent us from doing our work, and just like all the previous times it will lay broken and humiliated eventually. We are content we will be victorious, meanwhile we ask all our U.S. supporters to have patience and prepare themselves for the coming of WATAIN!”

WATAIN: Swedish Black Metal Horde To Unleash 13th Anniversary DVD

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Swedish black metal heathens WATAIN are set to unleash a new DVD upon the masses. Titled Opus Diaboli, the production commemorates the band’s 13 years of chaos by providing a visual and audio documentation of their ceremonial anniversary concert performance in Stockholm and the long years of physical, intellectual and spiritual work leading up to it. Opus Diaboli is an epic 90-minute journey into the forbidden realms of wild-hearted Satanic metal and the manifestation of a unique band that has truly chosen a path few have ever dared to tread upon.

Comments the band in a collective statement: “This movie was first meant to be the recording of our 13-year anniversary concert, but as everything with WATAIN, it took on a life of its own and become one of our most ambitious projects to date. It is a very personal and emotional piece of work and is certainly not for the faint of heart. But for those who wish to explore the glimmering abyss of WATAIN further, this will be a rewarding release for sure. The box version of Opus Diaboli [available exclusively through the band’s own WOLFWEAR.NET] contains an exclusive photobook. It was an overwhelming experience going through the massive archives in search of photos that best sum up the storm of passionate turmoil that has marked the WATAIN journey, especially since we wanted to stay away from live photos and focus more on moments off stage. The results were however very satisfying and offer a rare and spicy mixture of photos of which most have never been published previously. We are also proud to announce that this will be the first release on our own label ‘His Master’s Noise,’ a name originating from Bathory who had it in mind for their own label back in the early 1980s. Just like with our merch store WOLFWEAR.NET from which the limited box set will be available, this time we have chosen to stand by our own and do things our way.”

Opus Diaboli DVD: A four-panel digipack including the DVD, two audio CDs featuring the full concert plus a 16-page booklet with historical photos and flyers.

Opus Diaboli Box: Limited 12” box including the DVD, two audio CDs and two LPs featuring the full concert plus an exclusive 64-page booklet with historical photos and flyers.

Opus Diaboli will be unleashed in North America on June 5, 2012.

As previously announced, WATAIN will take part in the inaugural Decibel Magazine Tour alongside Behemoth, The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude. The live ceremonies will commence next week on April 11 in Ohio and bloody 26 stages including a stop in Oklahoma City where the trek will merge with the U.S. Torture Tour featuring Cannibal Corpse, Exhumed, Abysmal Dawn, and Arkaik for an evening of audio devastation.

WATAIN Frontman Comments On Upcoming Decibel Tour

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

As previously announced, Swedish black metal miscreants WATAIN will take part in the inaugural Decibel Magazine Tour alongside Behemoth, The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude. The live ceremonies will begin on April 11 in Ohio and bloody 26 stages including a stop in Oklahoma City where the trek will merge with the U.S. Torture Tour featuring Cannibal Corpse, Exhumed, Abysmal Dawn, and Arkaik for an evening of audio devastation.

Pleased to take part in the event, frontman Erik Danielsson: “We were originally meant to spend this year in the shadows, focusing inwards and on the new material we have compiled during the years since Lawless Darkness was released. This tour however was a bit too good to say no to. It is so seldom these days that someone actually managed to put together a descent tour package, which Decibel sure has managed to do this time. A ‘clash of the titans’ indeed! And considering the other bands on the tour, I can just imagine our management and the promoters biting their fingernails in anxiety and horror, waiting for the first arson or murder report from the road. Touring the States is always inspirational; there is always lots of emotion, anger, debauchery, decadence and a general feeling of lawlessness in the air, so I am sure this tour will nourish the writing process to a certain extent as well. A rich and fertile foundation of harsh physical and emotional experience has always played a big role in WATAIN writing new material, and this tour will for sure contribute to that. We will aim to make it interesting and memorable enough to do so.”

WATAIN released the award-winning Lawless Darkness full-length via Season Of Mist on June 7, 2010. The record earned critical accolades internationally including a Grammis win — the Swedish equivalent to the U.S. Grammy Awards — in the category of “Best Hard Rock Band.” In addition, the album won #1 Album Of The Year status in Close Up and Sweden Rock Magazines, #2 Album Of The Year in Decibel Magazine and #1 Band Of The Year in Terrorizer’s Readers Poll.

“Darkthrone were once ‘for all the evil in man,’ but WATAIN turn good men evil.” – Decibel

“…Lawless Darkness delivers all the pure kvlt evilness you could possibly want.” – Outburn

“Once again, WATAIN – combustible, ravenous and unrelenting – achieve a magical balance where all-consuming darkness (chaos) and brightly burning melody (refinement) wed to achieve the sublime (enlightenment).” – Terrorizer

“A WATAIN show is a religious ceremony, a time for the band to pay homage to their Gods. The theatrics and evil imagery, the dousing of themselves in (real) animal blood, and all of [Erik] Danielsson’s philosophies on rejecting humanity for nothingness is their way of grasping at their own liberation” — Portland Mercury

“Black metal bands seem to take pride in obfuscation: devising incomprehensible logos, concealing their faces with corpsepaint, releasing tiny-edition cassette tapes you can’t find even in the most obscurity-worshipping record shops. In a more strictly musical sense that means that you rarely find black-metal bands that play like WATAIN —heavy and dense but crisply defined. These scarily earnest Swedes summon a convincingly menacing thunder that doesn’t blur out of focus…” — The Chicago Reader

Decibel Magazine Tour Line Up Announced: Behemoth, Watain, The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Behemoth, Watain, The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude take part in premier heavy metal magazine’s inaugural tour starting in April

Blackened clouds are gathering overhead, and it’s all Decibel’s fault. North America’s premier heavy metal magazine is launching the maiden edition of its annual earth-scorching tour this April. The inaugural Decibel Magazine Tour will feature not just the long-awaited stateside return of Polish blackened death metal overlords Behemoth, but support from Swedish black metal provocateurs Watain, Dutch prog mystics The Devil’s Blood and Swedish old-school occultists In Solitude.

Beginning in April and laying waste through a gargantuan 26-date run, the Decibel Magazine Tour (presented by Metal Blade Records, IndieMerchStore.com, FYE, ESP Guitars and Good Fight Entertainment) not only offers four diverse European artists hand-picked by the magazine, but doubles as Behemoth’s first U.S. tour since vocalist/guitarist Adam “Nergal” Darski’s well-documented battle with — and triumph over — leukemia.

Gruesome visual evidence of this tour package is forthcoming: We went all the way to Sweden to capture the frontmen and women of all four bands for our special Decibel Magazine Tour cover story, streeting in April. “Considering the fact that we’ll be sharing the stage with the most evil and uncompromising bands around — Watain, The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude — this already makes it a legendary bill that you can’t miss out on!” promises Nergal. “Watch out. We won’t show up—we will ARRIVE with all the strength and might!”

“Part of Decibel’s mission is to push the boundaries of what a metal publication is capable of doing,” adds Decibel editor-in-chief Albert Mudrian, the tour’s principal curator. “By bringing bands like Watain, The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude to larger stages in the U.S., we create an additional vehicle to help raise their profiles. It’s another way to infect the mainstream with the power of the underground.”

It only makes sense that Decibel would present a tour package with a sense of integrity, purpose and history. “It is a joint force of artistic adversity and sinister creativity,” assures Watain frontman Erik Danielsson, “which makes me think of the glorious days when bands like Venom, Metallica, Exodus and Slayer toured together like a great middle finger raised towards their sheep-minded contemporaries.”

Excited yet? Well, here’s an early opportunity to score a great deal AND avoid standing in line. Fifteen premium packages are available in each market that include your ticket to the show, a tour T-shirt, a tour poster and a super-exclusive “Skip The Line” pass to move you to the front when doors open. The price of this package is less than you would spend on a ticket and a tour shirt at the show! More details, including tour dates, venues and ticket info will be announced at www.decibelmagazinetour.com on January 24th. Every ticket purchased through Top Spin will come with a commemorative laminate, and all fans that purchase their ticket through Top Spin will be entered to win an ESP Guitar.

WATAIN Win Swedish Grammis Award For Best Hard Rock Band; Frontman Comments: “…the Devil won again!”

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

On Monday, January 17, Swedish black metal overlords WATAIN took home the “Best Hard Rock” award for their Lawless Darkness full-length at Sweden’s annual Grammis ceremony (the Swedish equivalent to the U.S. Grammy Awards).

Comments frontman Erik Danielsson: “I always pictured the criteria for entering the Grammy awards to be those of mainstream music in general; conformity, insipidity and commercial potential. In other words, I was quite surprised when we even got nominated. But considering all the blood, sweat and tears we have put into this, our life’s mission, during the past 13 years, it is by all means an award well deserved. And no matter what the parameters were by which the jury made their decision, the Devil won again!
“Even if this music genre will always be one with adversity and wild hearted insanity as it’s very roots,” he continues, “the artistic value must be acknowledged not only on an underground level but in any cultural circumstance, high or low. Acknowledged I say, not necessarily appreciated. And in a country like Sweden it is about fucking time, for here it has been neglected and stupefied by the mass media for years, while legends such as Dissection and Bathory have been writing and releasing some of the most monumental albums in music history. The Grammy that we have won with WATAIN is a step towards rectification in that matter, and a sign that the artistry and infernal creativity that permeates WATAIN and this genre is being taken seriously. For that we are proud and delighted in accepting the award. As for it’s market-value or importance in a “music industry context,” we sincerely could not care less.”

Lawless Darkness was released via Season Of Mist on June 7, recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt et al) in Alvik, Sweden and features cover art by Zbigniew M. Bielak.

In related news, WATAIN was also nominated in the P3 Gold Awards to be held this Saturday in the “rock/metal” category as well as the Manifest Awards on February 4 in the “rock” category.

WATAIN – World Wide Death: Band Issues Year-End Update

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

In a year end message from Swedish black metal legion, WATAIN: “North and South America have now been left in ashes, and with that the Lawless Darkness Tour 2010 is over. Hail to those who made it possible, and those who made it even more triumphant; North: Watain Disciples USA, Goatwhore, Black Anvil, Decibel Magazine, Liz and Dave at Earsplit, Jimmy and the Duff’s crew, Josh at Dean Guitars, Engl Amps, Black Witchery, Negative Plane, Averse Sefira, Hod. South: Arma Productions, Hells Angels Antofagasta, Careloco and The Chilean Watain Militia, Kythrone, the mighty Mortuary Drape, the Tumba crew, and all those whose presence strengthened us along the long and winding road through hell and back. You know who you are. A special mention to S.L of The Devil’s Blood who took on the lead guitar duties in North America; hail brother! Finally, a thunderous salute to our iron crew, without whom none of this would have been possible.

See below to view a clip from Swedish TV (with English subtitles) about  WATAIN’s appearance at the Sweden Rock festival in June earlier this year. The concert was aired on the Swedish national radio program P3-Live on Thursday December 23rd.

And it is that time of the year again, when the media compile their lists and distribute awards.  WATAIN has received the following awards and nominations for 2010:

#1 Album Of The Year – Close Up Magazine
#1 Album Of The Year – Sweden Rock Magazine
#1 Band Of The Year – Terrorizer Readers Poll
#1 Personality Of The Year – Terrorizer Readers Poll
#2 Album Of The Year – Decibel Magazine

WATAIN have also been nominated for:
“Hardrock” Category of the Swedish Grammy Awards
“Hardrock” Category of the P3 Gold Awards
“Nordic Album 2010″ of the Nordic Music Price Awards

In light of all this, we would like you to contemplate upon the following lines:

“It is the magic combination of fierceness and beauty that makes the Wolf an exception even in nature. Revered outlaws, feared in their bestial nature, yet also objects of fascination and curiosity, of naturally inhabited and unreachable grace, that men love to hate, and hate to love. But regardless of what judgement the vox populi might pass on the nighttime predators, they remain just that; a rare breed of hunters; alone, aside, untamed, always hungry…”

WATAIN Announces NYC Meet And Greet;Lawless Darkness Earns The #2 Spot On Decibel Magazine’s Top 40 Albums of 2010!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Swedish black metal titans WATAIN have been setting North America ablaze with a sound and stage show that is a true assault to the senses.  Touring in support of their Lawless Darkness full-length released via Season Of Mist earlier this year, the wild ride commenced in Pittsburgh on November 6 and has been sweeping its way across the country with relentless fury.  Support bands, Goatwhore and Black Anvil, have helped make the tour package one of the most pummeling (and talked about) of the year.

Said WATAIN in a collective statement: “The Lawless Darkness Tour marches on relentlessly across the States. Greetings to the legions of hungry fiends that have come out so far, and to all of you who have brought us gifts and artifacts for the stage, you will not be forgotten! It has been a wild ride, yet it is far from over… Denial of the flesh; Denial of the cunt; we are the cold seed of Satanas!”

WATAIN’s final U.S. performance of the tour will happen this Thursday at Santos Party House in New York City. Following the show is a scheduled meet and greet at Duff’s in Brooklyn.

Lawless Darkness was released via Season Of Mist on June 7. Recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt, etc.) in Alvik, Sweden with cover art by Zbigniew M. Bielak, the record continues to reap critical accolades from press nationwide and abroad. The band scored cover spots in some of metal’s most esteemed publications including Decibel, Terrorizer, and Subterranea (Metal Hammer’s extreme metal supplement) and the “Reaping Death,” single was certified gold in Sweden for sales in excess of 10,000 copies. In addition, Lawless Darkness recently earned the #2 position in Decibel Magazine’s Top 40 Albums Of 2010 [January 2011 issue].

“…From the opening strains of ‘Malfeitor,’ WATAIN held the Rickshaw rapt with Satanic attention. Their reputation preceding them, the band completely revel in malevolence and black theatrics, from coating themselves in pig’s blood to utilizing flame as the major light source onstage. Frontman Erik Danielsson’s grim ringmastery commands attention and respect, while the band scorches their way through the soundtrack to damnation.” — Hellbound
