THE OCEAN: First Week Chart Numbers Revealed

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

Pelagial, the new maritime-themed studio offering from progressive metal revolutionists THE OCEAN, entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #10 upon its first week of release! In addition, Pelagial landed at #55 on the Billboard Top Independent Album Chart, #26 on the Billboard Current Hard Music Chart and #39 on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Chart. In Canada, the record ranked in at #23 on the Hard Music Chart and #194 on the Top 200 Current Albums Chart. Elsewhere, Pelagial hit #72 on the German Media Market Chart and #68 on the German Media Control Control Top 100 Chart.

Their deepest and most accomplished work to date, THE OCEAN’s Pelagial is a 53-minute exploratory composition written, recorded, mixed and intended to-be-performed-live as one single piece of music. Centered around all five pelagic depth zones — epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic – Pelagial quite literally submerges its listeners into an aquatic journey that is at once tranquil and terrifying. Pelagial begins rather light and progressively gets heavier and slows as the band reaches the unfathomable depths of the hadopelagic zone, characterized by complete darkness and a thousandfold increased pressure as compared to surface level. Said Decibel Magazine in a recent review of the massive undertaking: “Where the band was once steeped in sludgy noise/metalcore with orchestral interludes, they’ve become more luxurious, experimental and textural. Pelagial…further continues that shift, working on multi-tiered levels and drawing from DEP-inspired chaos, Opeth-like moods and Between The Buried And Me genre fiddling. It’s an album that strives to be all things at once without crossing into a ‘look-at-me’ mess.”

Pelagial was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden and comes as a double CD, which includes a vocal and an instrumental version of the album.

Check out the special clip video of the record currently posted at Invisible Oranges at THIS LOCATION as well as a full stream of the instrumental version, courtesy of Spin Magazine, HERE. Order your copy of Pelagial at: http://www.theoceancollective.com/pelagial.

“The sixth album from German post-metal doombringers THE OCEAN is huge… In the course of the record, tender piano interludes get stomped on by Mastodon-shaped footprints, lush strings work next to bulldozing double-kick work, and, at the end, the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos.” – Spin

“…as fantastic as it is dense. The concepts are dense. The music is dense. The two hundred and something individual tracks, all mastered together as one single piece of music, scream density like being sat on by a bull elephant.” – The Monolith

“Pelagial is brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of.” – Crave online

“Pelagial resonates so deeply because its sonic continuity is matched with shifting, unified composition. The album viscerally depicts the spectrum of submersion while highlighting the musicians’ versatility and cohesion. The band has never written more intriguing music, and THE OCEAN COLLECTIVE has never been a more apt name.” – MetalSucks

“…a journey within itself…” — Metal Insider

“…destined to be one of the year’s best releases.” – Echoes And Dust

“Creating music with a real meaning cannot be taken as a hobby. Either you put everything into it and make your message known or you don’t. Their correlation between diving deeper into the ocean and diving into the inner workings of the human mind is astounding…you would be a complete fool to not pick up this true work of art.” – New Noise Magazine

“Pelagial is quite possibly THE OCEAN’s most ambitious record to date — not only conceptually, but musically as well… THE OCEAN have been on the cutting edge of progressive songwriting since their inception, but Pelagial may be the record that finally puts them ahead of their peers.” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy

“Beyond impressive. It’s godly almost; perfectionism to the point that every minute flaw forces you to question whether it’s you or the album that’s to blame. It’s an album with a layered depth rarely found in modern music that never demands your exploration of those depths in order to appreciate the music.” – Axis of Metal

THE OCEAN: Pelagial Drops In North America Tomorrow!

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Pelagial, the long-awaited new maritime-themed studio endeavor from sound revolutionists THE OCEAN, is set to drop in North America tomorrow! Their deepest and most profound composition to date, Pelagial is a progressive musical journey written, recorded, mixed and to-be-performed-live as one single 53-minute piece of music. Immeasurably heavy both sonically and thematically, Pelagial submerges listeners, quite literally, through all five pelagic depth zones: epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic. The aquatic audio adventure begins at the surface of the ocean and plunges in synch with diminishing light and increasing pressure as one dives or sinks deeper into the ocean. Mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden, Pelagial will be released as a double CD, which includes a vocal and an instrumental version of the album and will make its way to North American shores tomorrow, April 30th, through Metal Blade Records.

THE OCEAN: Spin Magazine Streams Instrumental VersionOf Pelagial In Its Entirety

Monday, April 8th, 2013

In celebration of its forthcoming release, just three weeks away, Spin Magazine is currently streaming the instrumental version of THE OCEAN’s Pelagial in its entirety!

Written, recorded, and intended to-be-performed-live as one single 53-minute piece of music, Pelagial is a multifaceted conceptual musical voyage that begins at the surface of the ocean and plunges through all five pelagic depth zones: epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic. In synch with diminishing light and increasing pressure as one dives or sinks deeper into the ocean, the album begins rather light and progressively gets heavier and slows as the band reaches the unfathomable depths of the hadopelagic zone, characterized by complete darkness and a thousandfold increased pressure as compared to surface level. The tracks, or episodes, are connected by interludes of underwater sounds and samples taken from old submarine movies, which give the album a claustrophobic “Das Boot”-kind of atmosphere. “There are track marks, and there are actual songs built into this larger structure, but the whole album is a journey rather than a number of loose tracks… some riffs appear in the first two minutes of the album and then reappear 30 minutes later,” comments guitarist Robin Staps. It’s an experience that will reward repeated listens.

Delve into the sonic depths of Pelagial, courtesy of Spin Magazine, HERE.

Pelagial was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden, and firmly stands as THE OCEAN’s deepest, most challenging entry to their winding catalog of sound exploration. Pelagial will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26th/29th (Europe) and April 30th (North America/world) through Metal Blade Records. THE OCEAN Unveils New Track Via Pitchfork

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Today mega music portal Pitchfork unveils “Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe,” from THE OCEAN’s forthcoming new studio recording, Pelagial.

A progressive audio voyage written, recorded, and to-be-performed-live as one single 53-minute piece of music, Pelagial was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden, and firmly stands as THE OCEAN’s deepest, most challenging entry to their winding catalog of sound exploration. Pelagial will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26th/29th (Europe) and April 30th (North America/world) through Metal Blade Records.

“My original plan was to write a stepless musical progression, like a continuous color blending from white to black,” relates guitarist Robin Staps, “but I soon realized that it could not be that linear. It needed to stay interesting after all, and this is something that is usually best achieved by employing unforeseeable elements. In the end, any good idea must be put into perspective by its musical impact.” And so the listener will experience swirls and vertical currents while listening to the album; short, unexpected faster passages in between, sudden tempo changes that will make them feel like they’re rising again for a short bit — but the general direction remains very clear: “You can feel from the beginning, it’s going down. Deeper and deeper.”

Submerse yourself in ninth movement “Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe” at THIS LOCATION.

Additionally, preorders are currently available for a very special acrylic boxset edition of Pelagial, released through Pelagic Records. These heavy acrylic boxes are still available in CD format (the vinyl edition is now sold out) and contain the CD digipak as well as an extra DVD with the Pelagial movie by Craig Murray, all of which will be “buried” underneath five thick acrylic layers, colored in different hues of blue, each layer reflecting one of the five pelagial depth zones. The layers will be silk-screen printed with additional artwork by Martin Kvamme. Claim your copy now at: http://www.theoceancollective.com/pelagial.

And for those who missed it, fourth track — “Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams” — is currently streaming at the band’s Official Metal Blade Page where you’ll also find studio footage and preorder info.

THE OCEAN: New Studio Footage Posted

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

In anticipation of their upcoming new full-length, Pelagial, today THE OCEAN posts the second in a series of studio video diaries. Possibly their deepest and most profoundly sophisticated composition to date, Pelagial is a progressive musical journey written, recorded and to-be-performed-live as one, single, 53-minute piece of music. Mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden, the offering will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26th/29th (Europe) and April 30th (North America/world) through Metal Blade Records.

The concept of the album is made evident in its title. It’s an experience that will reward repeated listens.

THE OCEAN: Video Blog Brought To You By Decibel Magazine

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

German post-hardcore/progressive metal experimentalists THE OCEAN spent the last bunch of weeks making their way through North America on The Hypersleep Dialogues Trek, with headliners Between The Buried And Me, Job For A Cowboy and Cephalic Carnage (on select dates). Presented by Peter Says Denim, in association with Guitar World & MetalSucks.net, The Hypersleep Dialogues Trek commenced on April 15th and made its final stop on May 14 in North Carolina.

While the tour was a great success, it wasn’t without its trials and tribulations. The band thought it wise to document the insanity. Check our the band’s  10+ minute video blog, brought to you by Decibel Magazine HERE.

THE OCEAN was founded in 2001, when guitarist Robin Staps leased the basement of a former aluminum factory from World War II in the heart of Berlin-Kreuzberg. After a few weeks of daily construction work, Oceanland was born – a large underground complex of recording studio and sleeping rooms, where many members of THE OCEAN would spend the bigger part of the upcoming few years of their lives. The band’s live show was conceptualized and refined here, and over the years, a collective of musicians from classical as well as rock music backgrounds formed around Staps. Four albums were recorded at Oceanland before the band was evicted in 2008.

More post tour chronicles from the band to follow. Stay tuned…
