Candlelight Records February 2013 Label Update

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

NEW SIGNINGS:

CROWN (World): This French duo creates a wondrous sound that weaves electronics and bombastic guitars to maximum effect. Their Candlelight debut, titled Psychurgy, is set for North American release on June 11. Check out an advance track now on a free Candlelight Bandcamp sampler (also featuring songs from Cnoc An Tursa, Nine Covens, Wodensthrone, Voices, and more). The sampler is available HERE.

PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED NEW SIGNINGS: EARTH CRISIS, PESTILENCE, DEMON LUNG, VOICES, WOUNDED KINGS, SADGIQACEA, CNOC AN TURSA, PALEHORSE, NON EXISTENCE, MAEL MORDHA, HOPELESS YOUTH, SHADE EMPIRE, ARMED FOR APOCALYPSE, HYBRIS

NEW RELEASES:

FEAR FACTORY (North America): The band has confirmed 15 dates in North America. These dates are the first live dates by the band since May 2012 and first to truly support The Industrialist since its release. Full tour dates are noted in the tour section below.

ORANGE GOBLIN (World): The countdown is on for the boys from London to land on US soil for their first full tour in years! And all timed for the release of their first live CD/DVD, A Eulogy For The Fans/Orange Goblin Live 2012. Set to hit North American stores on March 12, it contains twelve awesome tracks as captured at Hellfest (France) and Bloodstock (England) last summer. “Red Tide Rising,” “Time Travelling Blues,” “Ballad of Solomon Eagle,” and the #3 Most Added song to CMJ’s Loud Report last week – “The Filthy & The Few.” Full tour dates with Clutch as well recently announced headline performances are noted in the tour section below.

HAVOK (World): The Denver thrashers are now tracking their still untitled third full-length album. Planned for release late June, it follows Time Is Up, the album that truly opened doors for the still young quartet. The band is producing with Terry Date mixing. HAVOK was a performer on Barge to Hell (alongside At The Gates, Napalm Death, Behemoth, and labelmates Corrosion Of Conformity, among others). Watch for more recording details in the coming weeks.

WOE (World): Withdrawal, the third record from the Philadelphia black metal band, is set for release on April 23. Hailed by media since their debut, A Spell for the Death of Man, in 2008, WOE has slowly built a solid fanbase with Metal Sucks saying, “this is the sound of black metal to come.” Teeth of the Divine note, “WOE carve out their own niche amid the US black metal scene without bowing down to either forced brittle Scandinavian worship, post rock injections or self loathing depression.” Pitchfork.com premiered the first material from Withdrawal a few weeks back. To have a listen click HERE.

MEADS OF ASPHODEL (World): Sonderkommando is the second album for Candlelight from these UK-based black metal medievalists. It is yet another dynamic adventure from the inventive band. Stereogum notes, “it’s impossible to nail their sound without just diving in,” when detailing the band’s unique sound. It is hard to pinpoint when you consider the band have covered Stiff Little Fingers, Discharge, the Stranglers, Conflict, Skeptix, the Kinks, and completed a split recording with Mayhem in 2002. Sonderkommando is schedule to be released in North America on June 18.

IHSAHN (World): The days are counting down for former Emperor vocalist/guitarist to touchdown on US soil, performing at this year’s Maryland Death Festival. This will be only the second time the highly respected musician has performed as a solo artist since setting out on his own (following the 2001 demise of Emperor). He is already feverously working on new material which he plans to record in the coming months; songs to be included on his fourth solo recording anticipated for late year. Watch for further details.

EARTH CRISIS (World): The band is expected to begin recording of their first album for Candlelight in August. In the meantime the band recently posted about two projects they are helping/endorse. Visit HERE to buy a tshirt with proceeds going towards Sea Shepherds. And check out vocalist Karl Buechner on this upcoming new album being put out by the folks at Fast Break! Records HERE.

ORANGE GOBLIN To Release Live CD/DVD; Additional Dates With Clutch Announced

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Candlelight Records today confirms March 12 as the North American release date for A Eulogy For the Fans-Orange Goblin Live 2012. The CD/DVD is the first proper live recording from ORANGE GOBLIN and will be released in tandem with the band’s first full stateside tour in over eight years. The special recording kicks off a planned year of non-stop touring and continues the success found in 2012 in which the band appeared/topped countless “Best Of” magazine and fan generated polls.

A Eulogy For The Fans-Orange Goblin Live 2012 includes ORANGE GOBLIN’s complete performances professionally recorded at Bloodstock Open Air Festival (England-August 11, 2012) and Hellfest (France-June 15, 2012). The DVD further includes the official Tom Cronin directed videos for “Red Tide Rising” and “Acid Trial,” the latter courtesy of Scion A/V, plus the Matt Chance directed “Red Tide Rising Documentary” and Gaetan Chataigner directed “Highway To Hellfest Documentary.” Art and design was once again provided by Jimbob Isaac under the direction of vocalist Ben Ward.

Discussing the album, Ward says, “for years people have been asking us to release a live album. It’s a warts and all recording to highlight exactly what you get at an ORANGE GOBLIN show. It’s not over-produced; you can hear the bum-notes and the forgotten lyrics as well as the energy and power emanating from the stage. And the crowd! I think that’s what a good live album is all about. It’s just the sound of us getting up on stage, plugging in and going hell for leather. Crack open a beer, turn it up loud and bang your head.”

England’s Classic Rock Magazine says, “put simply, ORANGE GOBLIN are the best metal band in Britain.” A permanent fixture on the metal landscape since their formation in 1995, ORANGE GOBLIN recordings have been embraced by fans the world over. Their live performances have been hailed as one of the best. Kerrang! says, “ORANGE GOBLIN shows are very predictable… you know they are going to be brilliant before they even hit the stage.” ORANGE GOBLIN signed to Candlelight Records late 2008 and immediately began writing new material for the first time in over five years. Teaming with producer Jamie Dodd and two-time Grammy-nominated engineer Andy Jackson (Pink Floyd), the band completed recording of A Eulogy For The Damned late September 2011. The record was released February 14, 2012 entering the UK Top 200 at 96 and landed on Billboard’s Heat Seekers chart at 38. The album hit the top of CMJ’s Loud Rock album chart on March 7 and ended the year at position 6 on the Top 50 Year-End Album chart. Decibel Magazine called the album,” maximum riffage, turbo-doom biker rock… awesome!.” Hellbound proclaimed, “this dish is one spicy meatball.” Popdose confirmed, “possibly the best record from start to finish that they have released yet.”

A Eulogy For the Fans-Orange Goblin Live 2012 features songs that span the band’s extensive repertoire including fan favorites “Stand For Something,” “Scorpionica,” “Quincy The Pigboy,” “Blue Snow,” “Time Travelling Blues,” and the album’s single “The Filthy & The Few” which is set to impact loud rock radio on February 26.

Complete dates with Clutch are noted below. Ticket preorder goes live via Artist Arena Fanclub on January 22. Public on sale date for tickets is January 25.

CANDLELIGHT RECORDS 2013 Label Update

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Candlelight Records extends a Happy New Years greeting to all our media, retail, and band friends around the globe. We have an active year planned and hope you will find many records of interest over the next twelve months. As always, if you have any questions or need anything, just ask one of our staffers and we’ll gladly sort. And now for the news…

NEW SIGNINGS:

We are proud to announce a number of new signings to the label.

EARTH CRISIS (World): No hardcore or metal fan can be unaware of EARTH CRISIS or the contribution the Syracuse-based band has made to heavy music since their founding in 1989. Now in 2013, the band begins a new chapter with a new record, a new label, a new quest to deliver music as only they can. Expected to begin recording late spring, watch for updates as the five-piece prep for an active and productive year.

PALEHORSE (World): Terrorizer Magazine call this UK bevy, “a band who marry a palpable viciousness of delivery with a desire to sidestep heavy amplification convention in search of a more unsettling and uncompromising onslaught.” Together since 2000, the band have released two full-length albums; both overwhelmingly received by media. Now for album number three, the band expects to turn even more heads.

DEMON LUNG (World): The Las Vegas-based quartet have completed recording with Billy Anderson and are anticipating a late spring release. The band notes of the recording adventure, “recording with Billy was an amazing experience creatively and personally. Having never met him before, we were a bit intimidated by his resume and the fact that he has recorded some of our favorite albums. But within the first three minutes we knew we were in good hands.” Anderson notes, “it’s going to be an epic album by an epic band.”

VOICES (World): Featuring Akercocke/My Dying Bride drummer David Gray with Akercocke’s Peter Benjamin and Sam Loynes, this new UK-based black metal band is set to release their debut via Candlelight in the coming months. From the Human Forest Create A Fugue of Imaginary Rain was recorded at London’s Legacy Studios and was produced by Dan Abela. Terrorizer has already called the record “a unique beast brimming with ultra-blasts and dexterous riffing.”

CNOC UN TURSA (World): The epic sounds of this Scottish quartet will impress those that enjoy the diversity of the current pagan/black/folk metal explosion. The band’s Candlelight debut, The Giants Of Auld, was recorded at Foel Studios in Wales by acclaimed producer Chris Fielding (Primordial, Electric Wizard). It is set for North American release late March. Heathen Harvest calls the album “a potent mixture of black metal riffage and rousing, epic atmosphere.”

NON EXISTENCE (World): The Austria-based band fronted by Philip Santoll is ready to unveil their second album via Candlelight this spring. Antarctica combines the familiar bombast of Dimmu Borgir with an Arcturus-like avant-garde swagger, and the melancholy of My Dying Bride. The band says the album is as cold and massive as it is beautiful and raw. The album follows up the band’s 2007 debut, Nihil.

MAEL MORDHA (World): With three full-length albums already to their credit, Ireland’s Gaelic doomsters now join forces with Candlelight for their next chapter. The quintet is currently busy working on the follow-up to 2010’s Manannan. The band recently performed alongside Primordial at the Redemption Festival in Dublin. Rotting Christ, Solstafir, and labelmates Winterfylleth were also featured on the bill.

HOPELESS YOUTH (World): These Canadians have been stumbling between basement shows and venues as they strive to bring fast aggressive music to everyone. After self releasing their own self-titled ep, Hopeless Youth have proved that they have what it takes to go to the next level. Now signed to Candlelight, the five-piece will be releasing a full length with plans to tour the world. Whether it’s beer soaked or sober, they’ll stop at nothing to play everywhere.

SHADE EMPIRE (World): Finland-based symphonic black metal band are set to silence a four year hiatus with a new record via candlelight records. Metal Observer calls the band, “a smorgasbord of melodic thrash, technical death metal, and synthesized chaos with an industrial sheen.” Chronicles of Chaos call them, “a veritable melting pot of metal genres.” It will be exciting to hear what this six-piece have in store for fans in the coming months.

ARMED FOR APOCALYPSE (Europe): The Sacramento band is hard-at-work on album number two. It is expected for release late spring. Featuring former members of Will Haven, the four-piece has performed alongside a wide-range of artists including Unearth, The Used, Static-X, Helmet, Lazarus A.D., and The Funeral Pyre.

THE WOUNDED KINGS (World): From the misty moors of Dartmoor, the respected quartet now call Candlelight their home. Roadburn alumni, WOUNDED KINGS have a sizeable world following and their new record is already eagerly anticipated. Aquarian Weekly says the band’s “riffs are so locked in doom lore that you can almost imagine there was a thin sheet of dust on the two-inch tape this was plainly recorded on from the irregularly dusted castle it was plainly recorded in.”

SADGIQACEA (World): Heavy Planet says, “while destroying everything in their path, Philadelphia-based Sadgiqacea creates an inspiring assault of beauty meets devastation. Crushing riffs and ambient beauty swirl as the vocals bark… epic and full on sludge.” Fueled by the duo of Evan Schaefer and Fred Grabosky, the band recently completed their Candlelight debut. Expect an April release.

HYBRIS (World): Weaving technical thrash with classic heavy metal and strong hints of progressive, these London thrashers are set to unveil their debut album late spring. Band founder/leader Federica proves that girls can truly thrash. The band has been regulars to the stage, playing alongside Municipal Waste, Helstar, Volture, and others.

NEW RELEASES:

ORANGE GOBLIN (World): Ready for what could be the biggest year in their career, the ORANGE GOBLIN boys are ready to hit the road to support their forthcoming A Eulogy For The Fans/Orange Goblin Live 2012. The cd/dvd will hit North American stores on March 12; just as the band begins their first stateside tour in many a year. Teaming up with Clutch, the band will visit cities all over the US and Canada playing fan favorites from their extensive recording registry. Confirmed tour dates are noted in the tour section below.

IHSAHN (World): The former Emperor vocalist/guitarist is set to touchdown on US soil for this year’s Maryland Death Festival. This will be only the second time the highly respected musician has performed as a solo artist since setting out on his own (following the 2001 demise of Emperor). He is already feverously working on new material which he plans to record in the coming months; songs to be included on his fourth solo recording anticipated for late year.

HAVOK (World): The Denver thrashers are getting ready to hit the studio to record what is expected to be a highly anticipated album. Planned for release late June, the still untitled album will follow Time Is Up, the offering that really opened doors for the still young quartet. The band was a performer on Barge to Hell (alongside At The Gates, Napalm Death, Behemoth, and labelmates Corrosion of Conformity, among others). Watch for more recording details in the coming weeks.

WOE (World): The third record from the Philadelphia black metal band is set to be released this spring. Hailed by media since their debut, A Spell for the Death of Man, in 2008, WOE has slowly built a solid fanbase with Metal Sucks saying, “this is the sound of black metal to come.” Teeth of the Divine note, “WOE carve out their own niche amid the US black metal scene without bowing down to either forced brittle Scandinavian worship, post rock injections or self loathing depression.”

MEADS OF ASPHODEL (World): Finishing up work on Sonderkommando, their second album for Candlelight, the UK-based black metal medievalists, plan to take their loyal fanbase on another dynamic adventure.

Also coming…. new recordings from ALTAR OF PLAGUES (Europe), LIMBONIC ART (World), and ABIGAIL WILLIAMS (World).

ORANGE GOBLIN Video Premiere Courtesy Of Metal Injection

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Today Metal Injection, in cooperation with Scion A/V, unleashes ORANGE GOBLIN’s mammoth “Acid Trial” video. The track comes off the band’s A Eulogy For The Damned full-length released via Candlelight Records earlier this year. “Acid Trial” was directed by Tom J. Cronin offers up four-and-a-half minutes of psychedelic live footage, sharp visuals, hot ladies and general asskickery.

Take at peep at THIS LOCATION.

A Eulogy For The Damned is ORANGE GOBLIN’s seventh studio album and first under the Candlelight Records banner. The offering continues to reap praise for its pure, sonic awesomeness from fans and critics nationally. Popdose called it “…pretty damn fantastic. Rockin’, riff-tastic and possibly the best record from start to finish that they’ve released yet.” Blistering crowned it “…a total pure-bred metal album,” adding that, “there’s not a trace of fluff or even a sideways idea to be found, which makes its execution all the more impressive,” while Decibel proclaimed: “Long-haired limeys, maximum riffage and turbo doom. Biker rock. From England. And it’s pretty awesome.” Metal Underground agreed: “With a sound that splits the difference between Sabbath and Motörhead, ORANGE GOBLIN serves up a potent dose of ’70s-style metal on A Eulogy For The Damned. Gloomy doom and punk power have seldom sounded so good together,”while About.com added: Orange Goblin’s A Eulogy For The Damned… is a lesson for the lesser ones. This is how to make a solid heavy metal album. It’s how the Chimera roars when it wants everyone to hear.”

Candlelight Records USA Label Update

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

BURZUM – Umskiptar: The new album from Varg Vikernes will see North American release on May 22. Finding inspiration from the verses of famous Scandinavia poem “Voluspa,” Umskiptar is a return-to-roots album. Says the controversial musician: “The vocals are more important than on any previous album with a total of 66 stanzas making up the album’s lyrics.” Umskiptar expands BURZUM’s ongoing influence of Nordic folk, but for this album adds more traditional heavy metal, signature BURZUM composition, and a keener emphasis on vocal delivery – once again presented in Vikernes’ native tongue. Umskiptar (or Metamorphoses) follows the historical story that details the creation of the world and its end as dictated to Odin, a recurring character in BURZUM’s lyrics. Umskiptar follows 2011’s Fallen. Said Decibel Magazine, “pounding, primitive rhythms are lashing by fizzing, frostbitten guitar which swirls in squalls around Vikernes’ inhuman, agonizing screech; a chilling mesmerizing, unflinching mirror on a profoundly troubled soul.”

Umskiptar Track Listing:
1. Bloostokkinn
2. Joln
3. Alfadanz
4. hit Helga Tre
5. AEra
6. Heior
7. Valgaldr
8. Galgvior
9. Surtr Sunnan
10. Gullaldr
11. Niohoggr

The album is available for pre-order now at Candlelight’s official webstore. [http://www.burzum.org]

WINTERFYLLETH – The Ghost Of Heritage: Candlelight proudly presents this special reissue of the rising English band’s 2008 debut album. Remastered by Colin Marston (Krallic, Atheist), The Ghost Of Heritage has been completely repackaged and features two previously unavailable tracks. Combining vicious yet moody folk-inspired black metal that harkens back to the early days of Enslaved and old-school Ulver, the Manchester-based quartet is that unique combination of beauty and brimstone. Roadburn Fest 2011 alumni, the metallers are currently finishing up their third album anticipated for release later this year. Guitarist/vocalist Chris Naughton notes, “it’s really great for us to have our releases under one roof and available for our fans in North America to own. We are excited about this updated version of The Ghost Of Heritage which includes two additional songs recorded when we did the original album; it feels right to have the complete recording session all on one CD. We hope you agree.” The Ghost Of Heritage hits stores on May 22 and is available for pre-order now at Candlelight’s official webstore. [http://www.myspace.com/winterfylleth]

HAVOK – Point Of No Return: Our thrash brothers kicked off their tour with Sepultura last night. All the bands totally rule and we’re expecting to see some rowdy crows. Prepare to have a sore neck and remember, no karate in the pit!” HAVOK will unleash their new EP titled Point Of No Return shortly before embarking on their first European tour (alongside 3 Inches Of Blood and Goatwhore) on May 22. Recorded by the band with final touches via James Murphy (Death, Testament), the EP contains two new songs plus two HAVOK-ized Sepultura and Slayer covers. The duo will take to the black carpet at 6:00pm PST for interviews with media while en route to the theater for the sold-out awards ceremony that is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm PST. The Industrialist again pairs FEAR FACTORY with producer Rhys Fulber and is the second album written by Bell and Cazares since reuniting in 2009 after a seven-year split. IHSAHN – Eremita: The new album from IHSAHN is set for North American release on June 19. Eremita, as announced last week, features nine new songs from the regarded vocalist/guitarist. It includes guest performances from Devin Townsend, guitarist Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore), saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining-Norway), and more. Eremita begins a new musical chapter for the highly regarded musician; his previous album, Norwegian Grammy Award Nominated After, forming the final part of a planned trilogy on its release in early 2010. Offering nine new songs to his growing worldwide audience, Eremita is the longest and most spirited of IHSAHN’s solo recordings. Reflecting on the recording process IHSAHN notes, “this is right where I want to be musically, with lots of room for dynamics and expressive variety. Tobias and Jorgen have really added to the organic vibe I was going for and have contributed to the overall feel with their fantastic musicianship. And to have Devin, Jeff, Einar and Heidi adding their special moments, I am very privileged to be able to work with such a talented group of people. I really feel this is some of my most inspired work yet.” Pre-orders for Eremita will be available shortly. [http://www.ihsahn.com]

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY – Corrosion of Conformity: Currently on tour in Europe, North Carolina’s CORROSION OF CONFORMITY have impressed all with their first new recording in years. The trio of vocalist/bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woody Weatherman, and drummer Reed Mullin are packing clubs nightly as they perform selections from across their vast catalog. The band is set to return to North American with tour dates resuming June 1. Invisible Oranges says, “Corrosion Of Conformity isn’t a comeback album or an example of diminishing returns. It’s a testament to immense talent and the elusive endowment of staying power.” Pitchfork adds, “Corrosion of Conformity is what you want out of a comeback record: not just a reclamation of lost vigor but a meaningful update on a vintage sound. If Animosity seemed like an ugly duckling back in the mid 1980s — too punk for the metal crowd and vice versa — Corrosion of Conformity registers similarly today. In an era when doom metal keeps growing bleaker and artier, and hardcore skews ever more dire, the album serves as a reminder that swagger, soul, and songcraft still have a place in the heavy-rock underground. CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, indeed.” CORROSION OF CONFORMITY tour dates are noted below: [http://www.coc.com]

ORANGE GOBLIN: Behind-The-Scenes Footage Of The “Red Tide Rising” Video Brought To You By Noisecreep

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Today Noisecreep premieres behind-the-scenes footage of ORANGE GOBLIN’s “Red Tide Rising” video, the opening track off the band’s forthcoming A Eulogy For The Damned full-length, set for North American release on February 14, 2012. The video clip is loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft stories and was shot in a series of dilapidated buildings around the UK.

Elaborated vocalist Ben Ward of the video: “We made the terrible decision to make the video for ‘Red Tide Rising’ the day after the London Christmas show so it meant we all had to be up bright and early, with very severe hangovers and head down to the New Forest. Luckily it was a bright, sunny day so everyone was in good spirits and the production crew went to work setting up at the location, which was some sort of abandoned army barracks in the middle of nowhere! It could have doubled as the location for Hostel 4! In the meantime, the band was dragged halfway across Dorset to do a photo shoot whilst being attacked by rampaging horses! When we returned, thankful to be alive, we were ready to go and the recording process was very pleasant and quite a lot of fun! We already knew that the footage of us would be mixed with some animation that we’d acquired the use of so we weren’t required to do anything too ambitious, just repeatedly go over the track imagining we were playing it to 100,000 people at Wembley stadium! Fuelled by tea and biscuits we got the job done and the results look great!”

Check out the making-of video at THIS LOCATION.

A Eulogy For The Damned is ORANGE GOBLIN’s seventh studio album and first for Candlelight Records. The ten-track offering was recorded at The Animal Farm studio in South London, UK, produced and engineered by Jamie Dodd and mastered by two-time Grammy-nominated Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson at Tube Mastering.
