IDES OF GEMINI Announces Summer Tour With Clay Rendering, Performance At Crucialfest And More

Thursday, May 28th, 2015

IDES OF GEMINI are very pleased to announce their latest bout of West Coast live ceremonies. Set to commence on July 14th in Oakland, the journey will coil its way around ten cities through California, Oregon, Vancouver and Washington, coming to a close on July 24th in Glendale. The band will be joined by blackened dream pop duo, Clay Rendering. As a precursor to the expedition, the ethereal trio will play two shows supporting Oxbow next week. Two weeks later the IDES will head to Salt Lake City for a performance at Crucialfest alongside Rosetta, Norska, Disforia and more followed by slot on the Demon Lung record release show in Las Vegas June 20th.

The latest round of IDES OF GEMINI rituals follows the band’s run supporting acclaimed indie rockers, Mountain Goats, which was cut short due to a medical injury sustained by drummer Kelly Johnston-Gibson. “After the disappointment of having to drop off the Mountain Goats tour last month,” issues guitarist J. Bennett, “we’re looking forward to getting out on the road again. Unfortunately, Kelly’s injury is still healing so she won’t be able to join us for the June shows with Oxbow and Demon Lung or our appearance at Cruficalfest in Salt Lake. The good news is that our friend Sash Popovic, formerly of [singer/bassist] Sera’s [Timms] old band, Black Math Horseman, will be filling in for those. He’s a killer drummer and a great guy, so we’re very thankful that he’s agreed to help us out. If all goes according to plan, Kelly should be back in action for the July run with Clay Rendering.”

IDES OF GEMINI released their critically-hailed, Chris Rakestraw (Danzig)-produced Old World New Wave full-length last September via Neurot Recordings as well as a special, limited Carthage/Strange Fruit seven-inch via Magic Bullet Records last month in honor of Record Store Day.

If you missed it, the band recently unveiled the haunting visual accompaniment to their reinterpretation of “Strange Fruit.” Written as a poem by Abel Meeropol in 1937, and set to music famously by Billie Holiday in 1939, the song stems from Meeropol’s original protest piece against the racial lynchings that marred the early 20th century in America and has been covered many times over including versions by Nina Simone, Annie Lennox, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Diana Ross, and countless others. The solemn video was directed by Timms, and is currently playing at Revolver Magazine RIGHT HERE.

IDES OF GEMINIs Old World New Wave is available on CD and digitally via Neurot Recordings and on vinyl via SIGE Records. For CD orders, point your browser HERE and for T-shirt bundles, point your browser to THIS LOCATION. The seven-inch is currently available on limited black and clear wax at THIS LOCATION. Desirers of the digitals visit Magic Bullet’s BandCamp page HERE or iTunes HERE.

“A stark blend of black metal-derived guitar riffs, rigid, martial beats, and the haunting, gothic vocal harmonies of bassist Sera Timms and drummer Kelly Johnston-Gibson, this album washes over the listener, feeling simultaneously comforting and unsettling.” – Decibel

“…the pure, sonic power of these songs… will knock you off your feet.” – Soundblab

“…an enjoyable dream-doom filled sonic journey from start to finish.” – Bearded Gentlemen Music

“…there’s enough droney doom on [Old World New Wave] to make you feel like you’re stuck in David Lynch’s dreams.” – Noisey

IDES OF GEMINI has a knack… for creating a world of sound and inviting the listener in. Their music has the feel of a classic horror film: all psychology, no fake blood or cheap startles. If there’s a goth revival afoot in metal culture – and, given last year’s releases by In Solitude, Beastmilk and others, there’s certainly an argument to be made for that – then IDES OF GEMINI is among its most evocative front-runners.” – Invisible Oranges

ÅRABROT: Maiden Single From Impending You Bunch Of Idiots EP By Norwegian Experimentalists Premiered Through Noisey

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

Norwegian Grammy Award-winning experimental rock cult, ÅRABROT, has just released the maiden single from their latest EP, You Bunch Of Idiots, through Vice Magazine’s Noisey music blog, just weeks ahead of the record’s release, and the band’s touring return to North American shores.

You Bunch Of Idiots is the third in a trio of themed EPs from ÅRABROT, the first two of which — Murder As Art and I Modi — having already seen release via Fysisk Format, who now partners with the Eolian Empire for the band’s first official US title. A ferocious blast of twisted noise rock and poetic rants, You Bunch Of Idiots drops six tracks of hook-laden noise rock with sludge, industrial, and rock ‘n’ roll flourishes, through it all spit-flecked spout-offs, hissing fits, and bellowing which draws you in and keeps you there. The EP was recorded and mixed by Milton von Krogh at Djura Missionshus, Djura, Sweden, and Taakeheimen Lydrike, Oslo, Norway, with vocal overdubs recorded by Karin Park at Djura Missionshus, Djura, Sweden, after which the platter was mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering. The excellent cover art was provided by Norwegian artist Johannes Høie, who has handled the prior two EPs in the series as well as other ÅRABROT merch.

Landing at the number four spot on You Bunch Of Idiots, “Mea Culpa” shows the disturbing underbelly of what ÅRABROT is so proficient in creating, seamlessly genre-bending extreme forms of music into an unclassifiable and mesmerizingly warped and unique sound. Noisey issues alongside the exclusive premiere of the track, “…here it seems that one man’s bewilderment is another man’s finger hovering over the detonator of a doomsday device while he entertains the idea of ending the world. That casual (and sometimes playful) disregard for humanity and all its conventions that persists throughout the EP comes to a head on its first single, ‘Mea Culpa,’ which Nernes penned while drinking alone in an old London pub on a dismal afternoon shortly before learning the full extent of his health condition…”.

Transmit ÅRABROT’s “Mea Culpa” at maximum volume courtesy of Noisey RIGHT HERE.

You Bunch Of Idiots is set for release via Eolian Empire and Fysisk Format as a 12” vinyl EP including download card and all digital outlets on June 23rd. Preorders for the vinyl edition of the record are now available in North America via Eolian Empire HERE and via Fysisk Format HERE.

On the week of the EP’s stateside release, ÅRABROT will invade North America for three weeks, touring in support of You Bunch Of Idiots. The band was slated to tour the West Coast US last year, and unfortunately had to cancel the trek due to main man Kjetil Nernes’ bout with cancer. Having beaten the hideous disease, the band will now hit the US and Canada with direct support from UK sludge power duo, Ghold, with appearances from the likes of Dispirit and Lycus on several shows, and Pinkish Black on the final five dates.

ÅRABROT North American Summer Tour w/ Ghold:
6/24/2015 O’Brien’s Pub – Boston, MA
6/26/2015 The Depot – York, PA
6/27/2015 Now That’s Class – Cleveland, OH

7/18/2015 Strange Matter – Richmond, VA w/ Pinkish Black
7/19/2015 The Studio, Webster Hall – New York, NY w/ Pinkish Black

Led by songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Kjetil Nernes (songwriter, guitar, vocals), for fourteen years ÅRABROT has fearlessly trudged through the European underground, carving out a sonic territory of sludge, punk, metal, and art rock, all collapsed into something uniquely their own.  Wearing perennial outsider status like a badge of honor, ÅRABROT laughs in the faces of the naysayers and proudly towers above them. While drawing from the likes of Dadaism, The Marquis De Sade, and transgressive art might be a recipe for pretentious tripe in the wrong hands, the outfit wraps it up with winks and grins, and — most importantly — rocks the hell out. One of Europe’s premiere touring acts, their devastating power live cannot be underestimated, channeling stadium-level theatrics and volume for the underground club set.

NEUROSIS To Embark On Their Most Extensive Stateside Tour In Over Fifteen Years This Summer

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

As their thirtieth anniversary nears, NEUROSIS will be hitting the road in their most extensive touring of the North American continent in over fifteen years this Summer, the announcement falling as the dust still settles on Baltimore following their crushing performance at this year’s Maryland Deathfest.

Not since prior to the turn of the millennium has the mighty NEUROSIS embarked on a tour of this size, as this week the band confirms more than a dozen new tour dates between the end of July and the middle of August throughout the Midwestern, East Coast, and Southern US states and the lower Eastern portion of Canada. Besides the extensive nature of the tour, they will also be playing in cities and states which they have not visited since the ‘90s.

For this widespread endeavor, NEUROSIS will bring an array of excellent acts to the stage with them, including support from labelmates Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, featuring Tad Doyle, for the entire trek, as well as eight shows with nomadic doomsday cult, The Body, five dates with expansive rock duo, Sumac (members of Baptists, Old Man Gloom, ex-Isis, etc.), and one show each with Pinkish Black and labelmates Iron Tongue. This all comes in addition to NEUROSIS’ previously announced inclusion in the massive, three-day Heavy Montréal Festival consuming August 7th-9th, where the band will perform the opening night with the likes of Mastodon, Meshuggah, Gorguts, Arch Enemy and many others.

Tickets for the impending NEUROSIS tour will go on sale for all shows this Friday, May 29th.

NEUROSIS Tour Dates:
7/31/2015 Liberty Hall – Lawrence, KS w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, The Body
8/01/2015 Mill City – Minneapolis, MN w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, The Body
8/02/2015 The Majestic – Madison, WI w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, The Body
8/03/2015 Thalia Hall – Chicago, IL w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, The Body
8/04/2015 Expo Five – Louisville, KY w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, The Body
8/05/2015 St. Andrews – Detroit, MI w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, The Body
8/06/2015 Opera House – Toronto, ON w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, The Body
8/07/2015 Heavy Montréal – Montréal, QC w/ Mastodon, Meshuggah, Gorguts, Arch Enemy [info]
8/08/2015 Paradise – Boston, MA w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Sumac, The Body
8/09/2015 Warsaw – Brooklyn, NY w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Sumac
8/11/2015 Union Transfer – Philadelphia, PA w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Sumac
8/12/2015 Broadberry – Richmond, VA w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Sumac
8/14/2015 Masquerade – Atlanta, GA w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Sumac
8/15/2015 House Of Blues – New Orleans, LA w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Iron Tongue
8/16/2015 Warehouse Live – Houston, TX w/ Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, Pinkish Black

As their ongoing legacy nears its thirty-year mark, NEUROSIS has become an institution of heavy music. From their beginnings as a hardcore punk band in the mid-‘80s to their gradual evolution into a transcendent and genre-defying collective, the Oakland, California natives have broken ground at every turn, pioneering a sound that influenced heavyweights including Isis, Mastodon and High On Fire and inspiring endless legions of fans with their expansive, mind-altering works. In 2012, NEUROSIS released one of their most ambitious albums to date, with Honor Found In Decay, cultivated through their own Neurot Recordings. Recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio and mastered by John Golden of Golden Mastering, the album showcased the band taking their esoteric but leveling and categorization-free style of extreme music to even diverse areas of exploration. Following the record release show, the outfit disbanded with the longtime visuals that had accompanied their live set nearly since inception, empowering their anthems in a drastically more human approach. Since the album’s release, NEUROSIS has been more active tour-wise than they have since before the turn of the millennium, and seemingly shows no time of ending the campaign any time soon.

POISON IDEA Declares Indefinite Hiatus; Cancels Upcoming Tour Dates

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

Upon returning from their successful European Tour which consumed the past several weeks, POISON IDEA has returned home and announced that the band is going on hiatus for an undetermined amount of time. The band has issued that they need to address some health issues and personal matters, and all upcoming shows for the undeterminable future have been cancelled or postponed. Additional details on the band’s future plans will be announced at a later date.

Portland, Oregon’s undisputed kings of punk, POISON IDEA released their critically acclaimed Confuse & Conquer LP through Southern Lord Recordings in April of this year. Setting everything in its path ablaze with the energetic pummeling assault the band has assaulted the planet with for three-and-a-half decades, and by incorporating the use of epic piano segues, the album is an instant classic for all POISON IDEA fans as well as one of the most undeniably important releases in the punk/hardcore realms this year. The band’s first new album since 2006’s Latest Will And Testament, and first since the passing of their great friend and guitarist, the iconic Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts, Confuse & Conquer boasts thirty-five minutes of thundering, infectious rage recorded in the band’s hometown by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust) and mastered by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise) at Audiosiege, and proves that absolutely nothing can stop this legendary act and all attempts are a futile waste of time.

Confuse & Conquer LP is available on colored 12” vinyl and CD including shirt and vinyl bundles HERE, and the album is streaming in full and available for digital purchase HERE.

Formed in 1980, POISON IDEA became a household name in the hardcore/punk scenes early in their career, and are known as one of the most notoriously in-your-face acts in the American musical underworld, with an enraged, high-energy live set even more rambunctious than the massive roster of singles, EPs, full-length studio and live releases and more, across a realm of labels including Pusmort, Alchemy, American Leather, Bitzcore, Tim/Kerr, Taang!, Farewell, TKO, Southern Lord, Candlelight, and their own Fatal Erection. They’ve been an incredibly influential act to major performers including Nirvana, Pantera, Napalm Death, Machine Head, Eyehategod, Emperor, Turbonegro and an endless list of others. Soaking up respect from generations of hardcore punks and dishing none out, the dastardly denizens of mid-paced punk shred are in trademark form on Confuse & Conquer. POISON IDEA’s new masterpiece proves itself both identifiable and rewarding to listeners who have encountered them at any point from their 1980 birth onwards. Their forceful hardcore pummel is underwritten with dark humor, rage, disdain, and moments of real melancholy well beyond the usual remit of the genre, but it’s to be expected of Portland’s nihilistic champions, proudly unaligned with any other sound out there.

SOS frontman Mike SOS recently completed an In The Beginning feature for No Echo on The Scorpions’ Love At First Sting LP right HERE.

Producing a fusion of heavy sounds, SOS is a maniacal musical beast which flails madly yet seamlessly in all directions at once. Their fifth full-length album, Strength And Conditioning is a nearly forty-eight minute excursion into barrier-free musical chaos with heavy melodic grooves, recorded and mixed by Travis Harrison at Serious Business Studios, mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. Lineup changes and a restructuring of the band followed by heavy-duty local performances for the past year formed a six-year gap between albums, but the band’s heavy dedication has paid off, as Strength And Conditioning boasts SOS’ most action-packed mayhem yet. Strength And Conditioning is streaming and available for purchase by the band’s DIY label 316 Productions RIGHT HERE.

MARUTA: Complete Remain Dystopian LP From Florida Grinders Now Playing At MetalSucks; Third Album Sees Release Next Week

Tuesday, May 26th, 2015

Florida-based ultra-deathgrind quartet MARUTA is now just one week from the release of its third LP, and first for Relapse Records, as Remain Dystopian breaks out of confinement early through a pummeling stream of its seventeen-track assault courtesy of MetalSucks.

It is inarguable that MARUTA’s Remain Dystopian is the act’s most punishing and focused album to date. Recorded in various studios including drums with Pig Destroyer’s Scott Hull and vocals with Torche’s Jonathan Nuñez, the record is a vicious, seventeen-song blast of relentless and infectious deathgrind mayhem. Featuring guest vocals from the legendary Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates, Disfear) and Pig Destroyer’s J.R. Hayes, plus layers of noise from Agoraphobic Nosebleed’s Jay Randall, Remain Dystopian raises the bar for what 21st Century grind can accomplish! MARUTA’s new LP is now streaming in its entirety via MetalSucks, who issues, “Remain Dystopian is the kind of record that will rip your jaw clean off and then tear your eyes from their sockets but leave them attached and dangling so you can admire your own tongue as it flops around making horrible gurgling noises. Or, put more succinctly: it’s one of the best grind albums of 2015.”

Unload MARUTA’s Remain Dystopian with MetalSucks now at THIS LOCATION.

Also watch MARUTA’s destructive “Hope Smasher” video at Noisey RIGHT HERE. Preorders for the physical versions of Remain Dystopian are available HERE and digital download HERE.

MARUTA’s Remain Dystopian record release shows will go down in the band’s hometowns directly following its street date, with one show in Miami on June 6th and another in Orlando on June 13th, followed by a one-off in Mexico a week later. Shortly afterward they’ll raid Europe in support of the LP, with their tour running from June 25th through July 11th where it will come to a close at the mighty Obscene Extreme Festival. Subsequent North American tour dates will also be announced in the very near, bleak future.

Named after a special project during World War II in which the Imperial Japanese Army used human beings for torturous scientific experiments, MARUTA has pummeled eardrums abroad through grueling tour ventures and inundated the masses with their bludgeoning, death-infused, grindcore concoction over the past decade. Following two LPs through Willowtip Records, and having signed with Relapse Records in August of last year, Remain Dystopian will see release on CD, LP and digital platforms June 2nd in North America, preceded by May 29th in Germany, Benelux and Finland, and June 1st in the UK and the rest of the planet.

With early reports of the album’s torrential auditory beatings pouring in, Heavy Blog Is Heavy issued a 4/5 write-up of the album, calling it, “the benchmark for upcoming bands in the venomous subgenre that is deathgrind… An addictive and endearing love letter to grind fans who would welcome an apocalypse, this is one step closer to the future of death metal and grind.” Alongside an exclusive premiere of the band’s first official video from the album, Vice Magazine’s Noisey blog issued, “MARUTA has gone from dead in the water to alive to dead again and finally resurrected. Hopefully that resurrection stays, because their latest burner ‘Hope Smasher’ is a full on cavalcade of grind blasts, groove-metal breaks, and all out pandemonium… Get ready to do your windmill headbangs, this fucker rips.” Stereogum dissected the album, offering in part, “MARUTA are no standard grindcore band, and they’ve got more than enough ideas to pack their upcoming third LP to the gills. This stuff gets the ‘grind’ tag largely by virtue of the breakneck pace at which they crank out their clipped tunes. (Average runtime: 100 seconds)… Remain Dystopian requires plenty of work to process, but it’s also incredibly satisfying if you manage to keep pace.” Decibel Magazine simply delivers, “Miami four-piece MARUTA are back together after a (thankfully) brief two-year time-out. They clearly did not reunite to start sucking.” No Clean Singing published that the band’s output is, “…an explosive rush of dissonant, raking riffs, near-inhuman drum fusillades, and beast-like roars. To be honest, it’s too much to take in on one listen, and the eerie guitar leads must have some psychoactive substance in them, because the first thing I wanted to do after hearing it the first time was to continue pressing play, without even consciously thinking about it.” And American Aftermath simply states, “Featuring seventeen vicious auditory assaults, Remain Dystopian is the perfect soundtrack to worldwide destruction.”
