“As increasing amounts of metal bands flirt with syncopation and contortionist rhythms, HE WHOSE OX IS GORED is one of the few that do so while inviting the listener in with catchiness and grooves.” – Invisible Oranges

Paralyzer is the latest seven-inch from progressive sludge-bringers HE WHOSE OX IS GORED. Scheduled to drop via Chain Letter Collective and the band’s own label Void Assault Records this Friday, the track “Paralyzer” was captured by renowned producer Jack Endino (Soundgarden, Nirvana, L7, High On Fire, Zeke etc.) at Avast! Recording Studio (Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Earth, Supersuckers etc.) as part of a Converse Rubber Tracks session and includes two previously released tracks – “Buried Twice” and “Void Assault” from the band’s critically-lauded Rumors EP – remixed by their cohorts in Seattle’s Newaxeyes.

In advance of its release, today Invisible Oranges is streaming the three songs comprising “Paralyzer” in full issuing: “Paralyzer effortlessly dances in the sludgy calculus of Intronaut. As increasing amounts of metal bands flirt with syncopation and contortionist rhythms, HE WHOSE OX IS GORED is one of the few that do so while inviting the listener in with catchiness and grooves. The video for ‘Paralyzer’ matches those sounds with disorienting images of mechanized factories and singer/synth architect Lisa Mungo yelling to the viewer.

Said Metal Reviews of Paralyzer, “What HE WHOSE OX IS GORED do with their music is to pile together, at first glance incongruously, doom, shoegaze, psychedelia, and punk (the vocals here are mostly hysterical screams). But then when you spend time with this release you recognize a picture akin to a simple scientific laboratory setting. Just like gas is allowed to occupy every crevice of an otherwise solid vacuumed matrix, if it is piped into a closed space, in the same manner the band sets percussive and heavy foundation, and then proceeds to fill every other musical level remaining with atmosphere, be it synthesizers (title track) or vocals distorted by some electronic device beyond recognition (‘Buried Twice’).” Two Guys Metal Reviews notes, “It’s rare to find something in a genre as conservative as sludge metal that simply breaks through so many tropes, and I get that these are remixes and that’s in many ways the point of this seven inch, but when a band like HE WHOSE OX IS GORED come out, a band who have been such an integral part of the underground for so long, it becomes even more beautiful and strangely charming to sink your teeth into. This is a band who have never let their sound be dictated by the conventional rules and Paralyzer is the latest and greatest example of that.” Echoing Magazine concurs, “Lasting around eleven minutes, this is a seven-Inch that you could enjoy at any time, for any amount of perpetuity, and it will never get old.” Adds Metal Assault of a recent HE WHOSE OX IS GORED live performance, “Their style of progressive/experimental doom is outstanding in its composition, as proven on their debut LP The Camel, The Lion, The Child (2015) and other EP releases, but the beauty is in its delivery, and achieving the perfect balance between clarity and amplification, the band has mastered the art of dialing in their live sound.”
