Today Stereogum hosts the exclusive premiere of “The Swart Raven,” from UK black metal legion WINTERFYLLETH. The track comes off the band’s upcoming new full-length, The Threnody of Triumph, set for release in North America via Candlelight Record on September 25. Stereogum commends the record for its: “sweeping, melodic grandeur and instrumental intricacies, which employ the standard black metal tools of screeched vocals, staccato guitars, and blast beat drums, but combine them with classical English instrumentation, creating something vast, inviting, and beautiful.”

The band’s third full-length was recorded in Wales with producer Chris Fielding (Primordial, Electric Wizard) and delivers ten new conceptual compositions that delve into tales of England’s archaic history, recounting major events and battles. LurkersPath.com already notes of the record, “The Threnody of Triumph …builds a monument of utter brilliance upon an already superlative foundation. Riffs pummel from all angles. The majestic scale of the thing is so inspiring that a palpable feeling of grandeur becomes the dominant subtext, each section swelling into an impossibly emotive crescendo.” Adds This Is Not A Scene: “WINTERFYLLETH cement their standing as one of England’s most dynamic and interesting black metal acts.”
Formed in 2007, WINTERFYLLETH features C. Naughton with drummer S. Lucas, guitarist M. Wood, and bassist N. Wallwork and combine vicious yet moody, folk-inspired black metal that harkens back to the early days of Enslaved and old-school Ulver.
