Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Presents: WEST END MOTEL And FIEND WITHOUT A FACE

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Mastodon mastermind/guitarist Brent Hinds is proud to unleash two very special projects this year: WEST END MOTEL and FIEND WITHOUT A FACE.

FIEND WITHOUT A FACE are a rockabilly/porno/metal concoction mixed with a bit of a country, surf guitar and applesauce on the side. They’ve been rockin’ house parties for nearly two decades, but word on the street is that they’re about to go legit thanks to Rocket Science! The self-titled debut features 13 tracks of singular awesomeness that needs to be experienced by anyone looking for a bit of adventure in their listening outings. Like a fat man sending back soup, these boys are on a mission for the world’s condition. FIEND WITHOUT A FACE are armed and dangerous, packing just pantyhose, a fez and a bit of Vyvanse.

WEST END MOTEL are a conglomerate of losers, poets and hobo-sexuals. Tom Cheshire met Hinds in Atlanta on a corner under a bridge in 1993. They were panhandling and drinking cough syrup and before long, music began spewing from their pores. Songs were written on an acoustic guitar and a bucket with the occasional toy piano in the background. Late nights turned into early mornings and much booze was consumed. They write and sing for the underdog and give the listener a glimmer of hope. Originally, they aimed for a Simon And Garfunkel hanging out with Ethel Merman but the end product sounds more like Nick Cave fronting Gogol Bordello. The songs take on a life of their own and no two tracks sound alike.  Throw Mike Shina, Stiff Penalty and Ben Thrower into the mix and you got yourself one good time. WEST END MOTEL are now an official collective and are ready to get down to proverbial business with nine-track debut Don’t Shiver, You’re A Winner. 2011 is their year and they’re on a mission with no luggage. The band took over Brooklyn this past fall, where rich men, housewives, home bums and a garbageman danced in the streets. The West Coast is next, then the world. These men love music and write for people who love music. It’s that simple. They write songs of loss and laughter and occasionally offer a new lease on life. They’re a gospel band, a soul band, a band of gypsies… Hear for yourself.

FIEND WITHOUT A FACE and WEST END MOTEL will be released as a two-CD set via Rocket Science Inc. on June 7, 2011. Said Hinds of the recordings: ”I feel like a thousand umpa lumpas have been lifted from my back. I want to thank everyone that made this possible..  in the time it took to put these two albums out, I wrote five more, so whoever likes this kind of stuff, there’s a lot more where this came from.” You can pre-order the CD/bundles & received a free download from each band HERE.

VOIVOD To Release Live Album In The U.S. Via Sonic Unyon Metal

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Sonic Unyon Metal is extremely proud to announce the confirmed upcoming release of a live album from the almighty VOIVOD!

Late in 2009, VOIVOD released their live Tatsumaki DVD, filmed the previous fall when they toured Japan for the first time ever. To celebrate its release of the DVD, VOIVOD performed in front of a sold-out crowd on December 12th, 2009 at Club Soda in their adopted hometown of Montreal, Quebec. It was their first headlining show in the city of Montreal in more than ten years and it was celebrated in grand style. It was a fitting end to a busy year that saw them named Metal Band Of The Year at the 2010 Indie Awards in Canada. The show was recorded for posterity and is now being released as the fifteen-track Warriors Of Ice, the first official VOIVOD live album to feature original band members Denis ‘Snake’ Belanger on vocals and bassist Jean-Yves ‘Blacky’ Theriault, as well as new guitarist Dan “Chewy” Mongrain.

Set for release on June 21, 2011, Warriors Of Ice highlights the classic period of the original VOIVOD lineup as well as a few new songs, all raging with the band’s notorious live energy. Containing songs from their classic albums, spanning from 1984’s War And Pain right up through 1991’s Angel Rat, as well as two songs from their 2009 Infini LP, the album is built of VOIVOD’s signature songs, from “Voivod” and “Nuclear War” to “Tribal Convictions” and “Astronomy Domine.” The cover art for Warriors Of Ice was designed by drummer Michel Langevin, a.k.a. Away, as always.

Warriors Of Ice Track Listing:

01. Voivod
02. The Unknown Knows
03. The Prow
04. Ripping Headaches
05. Ravenous Medicine
06. Tribal Convictions
07. Overreaction
08. Panorama
09. Global Warning
10. Treasure Chase
11. Tornado
12. Nothingface
13. Brain Scan
14. Nuclear War
15. Astronomy Domine (Pink Floyd cover)

The 15-track set captured on Warriors Of Ice is undeniably packed with VOIVOD fan favorites, making it an absolute must-have release for diehard fans and a great starting point for the uninitiated as well. This is the main set VOIVOD ravaged their audiences with on their 2010 US tour alongside Kreator, and at their headlining slot at the 2010 Scion Rock Fest.

VOIVOD are currently touring Europe, and will begin to assault the North American masses again this May when they are scheduled as one of the top headliners of the 2011 Maryland Deathfest. Stay tuned for more North American tour dates to be announced in the coming weeks.

Review copies of Warriors Of Ice as well as interviews with the members of VOIVOD will be available to U.S. writers and outlets in the coming weeks.

In Canada contact Indica Records for more info and promos.

KVELERTAK: New Video Premiere Brought You By Noisecreep

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Today Noisecreep premieres the “Ordsmedar av Rang” video from Norwegian newcomers KVELERTAK.

“Ordsmedar av Rang” comes off the band’s self-titled, debut full-length unleashed in North America via The End Records on March 15. Originally released in Europe last June via Indie Recordings, the record continues to reap praise from critics and fans alike for its unique blend of punk, black metal, classic rock and blues elements.

Commented the band in a collective statement: “The video was shot in our hometown Stavanger at Folken in December last year. ‘Ordsmedar av Rang’ is a song about how difficult it is to write lyrics, basically.”

To check out the video, point your browser HERE.

Produced by Kurt Ballou and mixed by Alan Douches with artwork by John Baizley and guest appearances by Hoest (Taake), Andreas Tylden (JR Ewing and Altaar), Ivar Nikolaisen (Silver), and Ryan McKenney (Trap Them), Kvelertak was awarded #1 status in the category of Best Heavy Metal releases for the month of March  by who applauded the band saying, “Kvelertak lives up to expectations, and is one of those CDs you can put on repeat and enjoy all day long.” Added popular Canadian metal site, Hellbound, in a 9.5/10 review: “…the erudite and unstoppable three-axe riff barrage and leather razor strop vocals of Erlend Hjelvik make this a release that will fire up the polemics machine.” Kerrang! Magazine named KVELERTAK “the best Norwegian band since A-Ha,” while Popmatters noted: “Rock ‘n’ roll, metal, and punk all collide to form an absolutely raucous first album that’s loud, confrontational, largely indecipherable, and most of all, huge, huge fun.” Long Island Press agreed: “Kvelertak the album abounds with such richness, openness, joy and hedonism. It somehow captures an entire history in its 49 minutes. It is timeless and multitudinous, but so urgent and immediate that it could not have existed in any other instant except this one.”

Bjarte Lund Rolland – Guitars
Vidar Landa – Guitars

IHSAHN Confirmed For ProgPower USA

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Former Emperor vocalist/guitarist IHSAHN will make his first American solo appearance at ProgPower USA, scheduled September 14-17 at Center Stage in Atlanta. Confirmed by festival organizer Glenn Harveston, IHSAHN replaces Arcturus on the Friday evening lineup of the popular music festival. Tickets are nearly sold out; fans are encouraged to buy tickets now.

IHSAHN comments, “I am very excited to get the opportunity to play at ProgPower. My backing band, Leprous, played the festival last year and had a fantastic time. Given the nature of my solo-material, I believe this festival will be a great place to present it live.  I have already performed at several festivals/shows in Europe in 2009/2010 and will do a few more this year.”

IHSAHN’s performance is expected to include selections from all three solo albums – The Adversary (2006), Angl (2008) and his most recent, After (2010). ”As compelling as Emperor’s best,” says Decibel in a review of After in their February 2010 issue. Continuing, the magazine notes, “IHSAHN sounds as fresh as he did fifteen years ago, but with the hindsight of a grown man.” Revolver called the album, “brimming with classical, goth, prog, and eighties-metal passages.”

After completes IHSAHN’s planned trilogy of initial recordings. The album showcases the Norwegian icon with drummer Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect), bassist Lars K. Norberg (Spiral Architect), and saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining). Currently at work on his fourth album, IHSAHN confirms he is eighty percent done with the songwriting and is planning for a mid-2012 release.

Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy) Award Nominee IHSAHN (born Vegard Tveitan) began playing music at a very early age. As a teenager, his friendship with Tomas Haugen (a.k.a. Samoth) would trigger the start of his music career — one that to date includes over fifty individual recordings, five high-profile Emperor European tours (the band reaching US shores on only three occasions) and the respect of fans and peers worldwide. In mid-2009, IHSAHN gave his first live performance in Oslo supporting Opeth.

IHSAHN is endorsed exclusively by Ibanez Guitars, Line 6, Steinberg and Blackstar Amplification.

Tickets for ProgPower USA are available now via Ticketmaster.

ARKHUM: Debut Album From Oregon Death Metal Horde Engulfing Listeners

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Eugene, Oregon-based sci-fi metal practitioners ARKHUM have been reaping worldwide praise to their debut full-length album, Anno Universum, recently released in North America on Vendlus Records. Following a long line of demos and EP’s, ARKHUM’s crushing, biological death metal is fully embodied on the debut album, with Anno Universum’s ravenous eight tracks covering more solid ground in 33 minutes than many contemporary tech-death metallers can in twice the time.

Following the recent release of the album, ARKHUM are booking more live appearances to showcase the material, their next being a hometown headlining show this week, with more in the planning stages.

4/30/2011 WOW Hall - Eugene, OR w/ Tormentium, Jean Grey, Rocket Propelled Chainsaws [tix]

Exploring multiple facets of the death metal genre, ARKHUM simultaneously utilize classic patterns and integrate their own technical flair and sci-fi imagery on their Anno Universum debut full-length. Through a torrential flood of unique, technically-proficient and utterly corrosive death metal, the album documents war-torn stories of torment, despair and pain, born of vast, unexplored realms of the cosmos, not just here on Earth.

Review copies of Anno Universum, as well as interviews with the masterminds behind ARKHUM’s science-fed attack are available via phone and email now via Earsplit.

“Rich with brutal riffs and dual vocals both snarling and guttural, and insane drumming, ARKHUM manage to bring something new and fresh to the metal world. 10/10″ – Metal Assault

“… Arkhum is the surprise of the month, if you ask me.” – Lords Of Metal

“From black metal to death metal to heavily melodic metal and back again, Anno Universum forges relentlessly on to ever greater heights. 4/5″ – Metal Underground

“…the best contemporary death metal hybrid I have heard in a very long time, and I struggle to think how these guys could improve from this effort without going too technical or too complex.” – Archaic Magazine

“…jam-packed with solid doom-metal riffage and tasty, melodic solos while Balich’s voice soaring overtop like a true Messiah. 9/10″ – Hellbound

“Unlike bands such as Candlemass or Solitude Aeturnus, Argus is not afraid to let the tempos run into the mid-range and thus avoids an album of dirges. 4.25/5″ – The Metal Crypt

“…soulful metal for thoughtful metal fans; the likes of which makes for some truly memorable music.” – Metal Army America

THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL: Entire Album To Play During Online Easter Radio Takeover

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

This weekend, in “celebration” of the Easter Holiday, Candlelight Records and Calgary’s Megawatt Mayhem will broadcast the entire 63-minute long epic, The Murder Of Jesus The Jew, the latest album from English avant-garde black metal bastards THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL.

The festivities will kick off at the stroke of midnight (EST), for the first moments of the Easter holiday, this Sunday, April 24 (locally officially kicking off at 10pm MST on Saturday night for those in the Calgary area). Megawatt Mayhem is broadcast online via CJSW 90.9FM’s official website, so thrill-seeking metalheads worldwide are invited to take part in the festivities. Tune in at:

The latest masterpiece from the infamous THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL, The Murder Of Jesus The Jew is an infectious and unique culmination of black metal might, presented in an utterly unique, epic, theatrical manner. The album details the historical life of Jesus (Yeshua), the Jewish rabbi who was slaughtered on a tree by the Romans on a cold Winter day 2000 years ago, and thereafter his people condemned to be pariahs of the earth due to Christian hatred. It is ironic that the Jewish roots of the Christian church have been erased and the blame of their man-god’s death cruelly placed upon a people already broken by the yoke of Roman imperialism. Truth is often blinded by faith, none more so than the story of Jesus and his maligned people.

Stay tuned for more announcements on THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL over the coming weeks. Interviews with Metatron, the key mastermind behind the band’s insane and genius hymns, are available to North American journalists via phone and email anytime via Earsplit PR.

“This is an album that fist-fucks all the rules and boundaries, and that we’re able to mention show tunes, psychedelic rock, horns and black metal in the same sentence without vomiting on our shoes is an indicator of the successful irreverence of this beast. 9/10″ – Decibel

“…more diverse than ever, with every track committing grave heresies against orthodox BM dogma…” – Terrorizer

“…the densest, shiniest, most stadium-sized work to date.” – Stereogum

“…a black metal version of Mr. Bungle…10/10″ – Blistering

“The Meads Of Asphodel has proven themselves to be the future of black metal… 4.5/5″ – Metal Underground

“Their English quirkiness is mixed together with punk undertones and old school black metal, while experimenting with symphonic, orchestral, Middle Eastern and folk elements. 4/5″ –

“The Meads of Asphodel are completely fucking brilliant, and The Murder of Jesus the Jew should silence any doubts of this fact with a resounding, deafening roar. A+” – Metal Army America
